I just picked up a few more PMAGs and decided they need to be... grippier. I have a few soldering irons laying around, one of which is a "professional" model with different shape tips (see pic). This will be my first time stippling anything, but it seems simple enough. I'll be starting this after dinner in an hour or so, I'll post pics when I'm done.

Looking forward to it. Have fun!
These Pmags must be MORE TACTICAL!
-how smoky is the stippling process? is this a strictly outdoor/garage type affair or would it set off the fire alarm indoors?
Naw do it indoors, not smokey at all... Stinks tho, good luck and have fun!

Most people I know use the lower budget pen style soldering irons since it has a pointy tip...

Yup, I've been using that style with different types of points I bought at hobby lobby. Been practicing on a pmag to build up the nerve do do my SA5.25. I'm not there yet.
Pics or it didn't happen! ;)

Chop-chop on the pics! I want to see what you've done!

Stinks, but it didn't set off the fire alarm when I did it. I did move outside so I wasn't having my kid and wife have to huff burnt plastic though.

Jesus, this takes longer than I thought it would. I worked through 3-4 of my wife's tv shows which are around 45 min a piece and got 1.2 mags done. The first one I did with a cheap pen style iron, starting on the spine and working my way around top to bottom (you can see the learning curve in the consistency of the pattern). On the second one I'm using the gun style iron with the cutting tip. I think the second pattern looks and feels better, and it seems to go faster too. I think I'm gonna take some sandpaper and smooth out the first one just a little bit, it's so rough that it's slicing up my fingers.
Also yes I did it inside without any issues. Not sure the fumes are great to inhale, but it's cold outside and I like my couch.

haha that's some aggressive grip! Sandpaper ought to make those ready to rock. I like the striations!
Second pattern looks like some of the clothes I had as a kid in the 1980's. :)
Cool beans Mason! I'll take ten. You have one hour. Time starts 20 minutes ago.
But seriously, that's pretty neat man.
I'm digging the pattern you have going on the second one. Haven't seen anything like it before. Looking good.
Try one with circles getting progressively bigger. Circles start in the center of each low area (same spots you are stippling now). I haven't done it but think it would look good. I imagine it being like the coil on a car cigarette lighter.
That second pattern looks good!

I might have to take a crack at this now. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the kind words y'all. I'm pretty confident the second dot-style one that I do will come out much better than the first, now that I have an idea of the right pressure and spacing and such. I'm thinking for the next mag, I'll reverse the tip I'm using so the flat side is down and try for a fish scale type pattern. Not sure if it'll work. I also want to do one with a "tree bark" looking pattern, but I haven't figured out how yet.

Sooo.... like a spiral? I can do that.
Pretty cool. Would it be better to stipple the raised areas instead of the recesses?

I thought about that, but I'm worried it'd make it too difficult to remove from the mag pouch and cause excess wear on the pouches. Unless it was a smoother texturing, like with the tree bark.

Not bad man. I stippled my XD when I had it, and haven't done my M&P yet. I've been tossing around the idea of getting Talon grips or going permanent.

I have one like that and find it too "rough/grippy"
I like that second pattern. Also, I think the pattern Sniper was suggesting is concentric circles, not a spiral.

Ah, like ripples. Got it. I'll do that one when I get home tonight.
Just finished the third mag. Thus pattern was the fastest one to finish, but the most challenging one to do, and I still didn't quite get the hang of it by the time I was done. I was going for a fish scale/dragon skin type look. I also think it'll look and feel a lot better after I take the burr off with some sandpaper.

Made an attempt at the concentric circle pattern... Didn't work out. I'm nit sure what kind of tip I'd need to do that, but I don't have it.
Here's the one I just finished, it came out a little sloppy but I think it could be cool after I get a mag or two more of practice time with it....
