The Political Correctness in this country is so out of hand. I didn't realize there was a "national debate on use of race-based mascot names for professional, local athletic teams"
What's next, animal names? We wouldn't want to offend that poor Gopher by naming him a mascot. He has feelings to you know.
This countries priorities are so screwed up I have almost lost all hope...

I don't know if there is much debate on it but there is absolutely a group that feels anything that could be offensive should be banned. Actually different groups for different versions of offensive. If such a group happens to be in power, poof. Funny, even before I opened the article I immediately thought of the redskins.
Note that article refers to TX, looking mighty purple there.

The rebel ones baffle me. I can understand the Indian mascots but the rebel ones?

Same thing happened in Eaton with their mascot. The alternative from some folks was to call them,...... The Eaton Beavers......... That brewhaa died rather quickly afterwards.
This reminds me of the epic south park episode "Giant Douche - Turd Sandwich". That episode sums it all up perfect and it also is a perfect representation of the Democrat / Republican stinking pile of poo that is our election system.

Probably "Rebel = Confederate = Slavery = Hateful to blacks"
I guess finally Notre Dame will now stop stereotyping me as fist fighting balding bearded white guy with green suit and a hat, just because I'm part Irish, about time.

It's not new. My dad and brother went to Illinois, which has the highly-offensive-to-native-americans Chief Illiniwek for a mascot and has been fighting about it for decades.
Yeah, we'll go with offensive, I guess. I had never heard so much about such a horrible tragedy that I cared so little about.

I bet 99% of native americans have never heard of Chief Illiniwek. My college had an indian name that white pampered liberals starting crying about in the late '90s, so they changed it. Fortunately this pissed off old alums who don't believe in that kind of nonsense, and they put on hold their donations/pledges until the school changes back the mascot. Serves them right, hated my school.

Probably "Rebel = Confederate = Slavery = Hateful to blacks"
Yet that is not why the civil war was fought. "Yankee" should have the same racist implications seeing as the people of the "north" could of cared less for black people.

Yeap, one of the biggest lies in American "History" is the narative currently taught about the reasons behind the civil war.

http://collider.com/espn-star-wars-admiral-ackbar-ole-miss/ (?) Admiral Ackbar?
I much prefer baseball to football personally, but the Redskins thing always makes me think of Cleveland. They are de-emphasizing Chief Wahoo more and more.

I suspect in less than a decade, you won't get those classic Indians hats anymore, which I'll miss.
Having said that, their extremely plain uniforms they have been using (away and alt1) look great to me. Most teams dress terribly, these look good.

Edit: If Cleveland had to abandon the name, going back to the Naps would be awesome.
If your not offended by something, or someone's words, then freedom has disappeared.

Heh, combining this and Jeff's:
Rebel = Rebel Alliance = Admiral Ackbar = Fish = Fish Sticks = Kanye West = Obama

A friend's high school team were the called Fighting Golden Beavers. Don't recall if there was a mascot, maybe Bucky Beaver or some such foolishness.

The way I see it, the teams are all privately owned and can name their teams whatever they want. If people have problems with that they don't HAVE to watch that team.

Go away and take your common sense with you.
Are they gonna ban "Fighting Irish?" "Demon Deacon?" "Blue devil?"
Spartans and Trojans are offense as well. It is like saying University of XX at YY COMMIES.
Spartans are coming!
Trojans are coming!
Commies are coming!
[hahhah-no]
i went to illinois and was a chief's last dance. people don't point and laugh or make fun of chief, it was taken very seriously. is he a true representation of native americans? no, of course not. but he isn't a caricature either. if hes offensive then the FSU mascot is incredibly so.
