View Full Version : Mounting a radio in the old truck
How do I go about mounting a new radio in the beast and make it look decent? Here is the hole. 1978 F250

Any place that sells sterios sells trim kits. A generic one will do fine. They might list your truck if you go to crutchfield.com and use their search tools.
You could probably do something with Kydex.

I made a gauge bezel out of aluminum once and it turned out great!
Just put some 2x4's on it!

After looking at what is left of your dash and what is available out there I would use and aluminum plate for the opening and cut a din size hole in it. Mount radio and make sure you use a rear support. Are there already holes in the doors? This should be an afternoon job.

You need a modern radio with a DIN chassis and mount.
A 2cnd +1 for Crutchfield.

If you don't smoke you can fit one of the smaller Cobra CB's in the cutout if you ditch the ashtray.............

You need to find a 78-79 grill and lights for it.
Totally changes the front end look.

I did one on my dads truck, it was a 84, instead of mounting on the dash i would cover it up and put it in the glove compartment. my dad loves it. he hooks his iphone up via bluetooth, and hes done.!!!

2nd you might want to measure the dept u have there to make sure a radio will fit.

Hell on those old Fords you can crawl up under the dash and take a nap.
I put lots of radios, scanners and CB's in F350's of that vintage, even put a 5" TV in one just to the right of the radio where the AC vents are.
Behind the dash room is not an issue on them.

Here's a decent video on what would need to be done to install a modern stereo into the cutout in the dash.

That was when TVs had CRTs, so that was a lot of room.......

That's what I did in the Amigo.
