No Vehicle Title

I posted forever ago that my brother gave me his old Grand Cherokee. Been fixing small things on it little by little but still have a long ways to go.

I found out he never received his title after he paid it off. Place that first did his finance went out of business and his loan
was sold to another company. Right after he paid it off this company bites the dust. He never got any kind of title for it.
So now I have this cool jeep just hanging out that I can't register. He can still register it, but I'm not putting any kind of money into it unless its in my name.
I can't believe he never cared to have the title dealt with. He put a lot of cash in that money pit. Now it's my turn LOL.

How do I go about getting a title for this pit?

Have the brother apply for duplicate title. DMV will do the title search and should be able to find the release of lein.
If he has any proof of paying it off that will help. Worst case scenario he will have to do a Bond title, where he posts a bond equal to the value of the vehicle while the title is being searched. Even if the bank closed it's doors some body some where has the title.

I'll most likely have to do the leg work. I will drag him to the DMV if need be though.
