The Rocky Mountain Steel Quest is a "hike-and-shoot" rifle match similar to the Steel Safari. We have two divisions: one for long-range rifle, and one for semi-automatic .223/5.56 caliber rifles ("carbines") only. The match tests the spectrum of skills involved in getting to a shooting location, identifying targets, and engaging long-range rifle targets with only one shot a piece. Some of these skills include target recognition, ranging, wind doping, ballistic data management, marksmanship under field conditions, non-standard shooting positions, rudimentary trail skills.

Anyone else going?

Don't be afraid of the wait list. There is typically good movement on all the Competition Dynamics wait lists in the past. You just have to be ready last minute if there are openings.

Since every participant is to RO, and thus requires binoculars, anyone know what power binocs are needed?

I run 10x Geovids and a Terrapin - it is plenty. Remember you got to hump them with you all day.

Anything in the 10X power should be sufficient.

How about thoughts on optic for the carbine division? Since it's the same distances as the long range rifles, I imagine some power is necessary.

If I was going to run in the carbine division I would use something in the 3-15x range. 8x might be the lightest I would go.

i run a 3 x 12 and had no problems with a plate at 820 yds at the team challenge.

The first year of the Team Challenge I used a Leupold 1-8. The following year I used a 4-16. This year I will again use a 4-16.

I recommend 69 or 77gn bullets going 2700-2800.

This may be a dumb question, but what about barrel length? I'm thinking that velocity is going to be tough with anything less than 18".

You'd be right. Most run 18" or 20"s

Sunday was gorgeous...if you love winter. Saturday was pretty good if you like warmer weather. Broke a 10,000 tow strap trying to drag a boulder off the road to the staging areas. By the end, there was snow of about 5 to 6 inches and drifted to more than a foot up on top. It was apparent that some people were not using "winter tested" gear while others almost total reliance on electronic rangefinders had them time out without even taking a shot. What a blast!

Nice to meet some of y'all. Had a lot to learn from this match, vs the SAC that I came prepared to shoot.

Who do I owe an orange ski strap to?

Who do I owe an orange ski strap to?That was me.

Nice meeting you guys, glad everyone made it home safe! It sure was an eyeopener for me, I learned a lot and hope to take what I learned to the Steel Safari in June.
