View Full Version : Marriage may require classes
Imagine that, a California group pushing for more laws. Up tp 30 hours of classes depending on which marriage it is. I know it's just a proposal but wow, just wow.

Colorado proposal would require pre-marriage education classes
A California group has proposed a ballot initiative in Colorado that would require couples who want to get married to take mandatory pre-marriage education classes.
The Colorado Marriage Education Act would require potential spouses to complete 10 hours of pre-wedding marriage education. Twenty hours would be required for second marriages and 30 hours for third marriages, KDVR.com reported Monday.
A re-marrying widow would be be treated as a first-timer under the proposal, which would not apply to civil unions, according to The Denver Post.
David Schel and Sharon Tekolian of California-based Kids Against Divorce told the newspaper the intended purpose of the act is to "better prepare individuals going into marriage to fulfill their new roles as spouse and potentially as parent, to furthermore protect children given that marriage is the foundation of a family unit."
The group, which is dedicated to supporting children of divorce, will need to gather 86,105 valid signatures by Aug. 4 to put the initiative on the November ballot. The organization plans to propose similar bills across the country, according to The Denver Post.
"Education is the key to success in every aspect of life. This will have a positive impact on marriage," Tekolian said.
Alyx Reese-Giles, who was married for the third time in November, told the newspaper that despite completing six months of marriage counseling through her church, her second marriage lasted less than two months.
"This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard," Reese-Giles said. "The government has no business deciding what education people should or should not get before entering into marriage. Marriage is about communication and being ready to commit, and no class is going to teach you that."
The Denver Post reported that the ballot initiative also includes a tax cut for couples who voluntarily complete continuing marriage education each year to "reduce the billions of dollars taxpayers spend annually on divorce."

The catholic Church use to require (or may still, for those "active") X hours of counseling / discussion with the intended parties before they would marry you.
I would venture to guess in CA same sex couples would be 15 hours seeing how only 1 gender is involved ;)

We had to do that once a week for an hour for 8 weeks

I attended a wedding in August and just found out the couple has already filled for divorce. Divorce rate are stupid high in society but I don't believe in new laws being created to control the sheep. Wouldn't states want more divorces? More revenue from court fees and more business for 2nd and 3rd marriages.
The Great Kazoo is correct the Catholic Church used to require classes be getting married I had to attend them with my first wife. Why don't Californians keep their ideas in Kalifornia!

We did it to appease me late sainted mother. WHO of all Catholic's, worked for the Archdiocese of NY, suggested we live together before getting married, just in case. That was 39 years ago.
Either marriage works or it doesn't.
WAY OT. Had a client who told me she was getting divorced, because her husband was seeing a younger woman. Keeping in mind my client had just turned 21 [LOL]

I see younger women all the time. I hear them, too, which is enough to keep me far, far away from them.

All this is why I'm gonna marry a chick with ugly duck syndrome, but she must be able to cook. If a woman can't cook, I don't want anything to do with her (past one night anyways).

...when they look up from their phone....and then they go right back to the phone.
Government should get the hell out of the marriage business.
If California passed a law where you had to have class to get married, their marriage rates would plummet.

We really have to move our culture away from this foolish notion that just because something is a good idea means "there outta be a law".
It seems like an answer to often proposed legislation to attend a meeting with your doctor before an abortion.

Tell you what, I'll accept that class, IF we also get it passed that you must pass basic civic tests in order to vote, re-certification every, oh, 5 years or so.

Marriage is a religious sacrament. It was created by religion, for religion, and the government has no place trying to control it. I was married by the church (after attending mandatory classes that forced us to talk about important things, like budgeting, sharing responsibility, and family planning), not by the state. I couldn't care less if the government knows that I am married. My marriage has nothing to do with government and if government tries to get involved with my marriage, I'm rightfully going to be pissed off.

I'm there with you on that. And if you Dont have at least a high school diploma or GED you are not allowed to vote.
If I decide to get married to my live in girlfriend of 14 years I will need 30 hours of class, BS, "It's for the children". Maybe they are talking about my grandkids, but they actually like having eight grandparents. I went to the doctor with two flat rocks 25 years ago, before my second marriage. So now your going to teach me what? I would like to have had my first two wife's go to a class to learn how not to run up credit card debt like a democrat in congress. I'm sure this class will be teaching men to always say "your right" no matter the situation. We should petition for a new law on the ballot in November saying nobody from another state can create a law in Colorado. FU, Kalifornia, stay home and show me how well it works in your state to make marriage more difficult.

And that's the point.
See, marriage and an in-tact two parent households are more likely to produce conservative children (that is, children that grow up to be conservatives). Single parent households (especially those headed by women) are much more likely to produce liberals and criminals (both of which will end up advancing the leftist agenda).
The simple fact is that the best way to destroy conservatism, libertarianism and constitutionalism and eventually liberty and America is to destroy the family structure ... then society spins out of control and the need for a heavy handed nanny state rises.
ALL social engineering is designed to grow the power of The State at the expense of liberty.

My lady and I have been together for 5 years. Our son will turn 4 in May. We got engaged quickly after finding out that she was pregnant, a knee jerk reaction on my part, but have yet to get married. My brother is convinced that we haven't been married because of libertarian beliefs. That's not the case at all but he's definitely right in thinking that I don't feel that the government should have the ability to put a stamp of approval on our commitment to each other.

We had to do this (married in 1980) but since I was home on leave from the Army I got a pass of sorts on this and not having made my Confirmation as a young lad. Monsignor gave me the materials for self study after a quick compatibility test and an hour of counseling both of us. They never made it past the church dumpster. We've made it 33 years so far.

Sincerely, go fuck yourself.

I took marriage counselling before getting married. My pastor (also a close friend) requires it if he is going to officiate your marriage. If your church wants things that way, then you are free to marry that way. However you should not be FORCED to. More government is never the answer!
I bet if it's government mandated, they would tell people to tell on their spouse to the government! Create a situation much like the one that they had in Nazi-era Germany. "Rat them out if they even chew their food suspiciously."
WTF is this "no name" CA group trying to get legislation passed in CO? [facepalm] Mind your own farking business. This is not a good use of our government and a wholly stupid idea.
I've had friends quite going to churches that required counseling sessions before they could be married in the church.
Sort of reminds me of all the child care classes required by social services before allowed to foster care. I always took great delight in that my wife and I had at least twice the experience of most the social workers providing the training. Kind of like getting marital advise from a celibate priest [ROFL1]
The best government is less government.

So government should be able to force you to take a government indoctrination class before you can engage in the basic human right of Marriage, but if the state demands to see someone's driver's license before they can vote that would be stepping over the line?

Likewise, Driving is a privilege, BUT, same sex marriage is A Right.
Sounds like a way to skip out on lawyer fees when you get divorced. Show up in court and say, "We never took our marriage classes." Then walk out the door.

To easy to get married, PITA to get divorced
I attended the religious class with Reverend before getting married. It was about 5 hours of course. Lots of paper work.
It was helpful.

So a state that allows same sex marriage is going to mandate that we have marriage counseling? Whats next, a dna test to make sure we are compatible? Piss off.
Oh, and let me guess who will end up paying for this.

Note that they are specifically excluding "Civil Unions" from the mandatory counseling requirement.
Mustn't inconvenience the gays ya know ... that would be homophobic.

Well that's not fair unless they offer civil unions to everyone. <insert equal sign picture>
