The state health department and other agencies are urging the Food and Drug Administration to begin regulation of electronic cigarettes.

E-cigarettes are battery-powered smoking devices that vaporize a liquid solution, simulating tobacco.

"We call on the FDA to regulate all tobacco products," Dr. Larry Wolk, executive director of the Colorado Department of Public Heath and Environment said in a news release. "We need to close the loopholes that let the tobacco industry market products that threaten the health of Coloradans."

Almost 7 percent of adults in Colorado have tried e-cigarettes, according to the release.

I've been using a vaporizer (e-cig) for about 17 months now. I've had a handful of cigarettes during this time. I understand that there haven't been any long term studies as to their effects but I know that short term they've helped me stop smoking cigarettes and I believe that they're a healthier alternative. The idea that the tobacco industry is using them as a loophole to threaten the health of Coloradoans is asinine. They're providing a potentially healthier, less costly alternative to tobacco products. From what I've seen, the major backers for the regulation of the electronic cigarette industry is the tobacco companies themselves.

Hey Colorado Government, leave me the hell alone. I'm doing just fine by myself.

But marijuana is ok? They just want the exrtra taxes that come from regulations. Gov at its best.

How do you know they are healthier? Do you know exactly what is in the liquids you are vaporizing?

How do you know they are healthier? Do you know exactly what is in the liquids you are vaporizing? Propylene Glycol.

Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerin. The fact that I don't hack a bunch of crap up in the morning, haven't had bronchitis in 18 months and can actually taste and smell things now are pretty good indications that's it's a healthier alternative. It also doen't have any of this or 4k other chemicals in it:

Acetone – found in nail polish remover
Acetic Acid – an ingredient in hair dye
Ammonia – a common household cleaner
Arsenic – used in rat poison
Benzene – found in rubber cement
Butane – used in lighter fluid
Cadmium – active component in battery acid
Carbon Monoxide – released in car exhaust fumes
Formaldehyde – embalming fluid
Hexamine – found in barbecue lighter fluid
Lead – used in batteries
Naphthalene – an ingredient in moth balls
Methanol – a main component in rocket fuel
Tar – material for paving roads
Toluene - used to manufacture paint

Well, screw 'em, everyone just quit smoking. I used to smoke cig's, quit in 2000, but then I developed a taste for cigars. Started out with the $4 stogies, then quickly gravitated to the $6-$9 items, then the $9-$12 and more. Then I had a drop in income so I quit the cigars. I could not go back to the $4 jobs so I just quit. Been tobacco free since 2008.

I wish everyone would quit all tobacco use, it is vile stuff. However, I have not given up the good scotch and other whiskies, vodkas and tokillyou.

I would say that they might have a chance regulating what goes IN to an Ecig. But the idea that you can regulate a device like this is just ludicrous. Because what it is it? Its just a miniaturized version of a air humidifier.

They can't regulate it all. If they try to regulate the liquid then I'll just start buying PG, VG and flavorings in bulk and mixing my own. Or they'll just give me another reason to have a Wyoming address.

They would have to somehow make nicotine into a controlled substance. Which might be possible.

As has been stated, it's not about regulation, it's about taxation. You already have to be 18 to purchase liquid nicotine.

Been hearkng about this for awhile. Someome else already nailed it. Having an agency that regulates tobacco regulate this the same is asinine.

That sort of regulation is ludicrous. You're probably right that it's being pushed by the tobacco companies. Why do I say that? From the ad (which I find hilarious quite frankly) that says something to the effect of "Friends shouldn't let friends smoke...especially when there's this ecig!"

I'd rather smoke something that is well tested by humans for thousands of years--the regular cigarettes. With that said, I don't smoke.

"Well tested" and long term effects well documented... http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/fact_sheets/health_effects/effects_cig_smoking/ With that link posted, I don't smoke.
