Sorry for the low res and shaky camera, didn't want to let it run very long this way.

Takes a good mechanic to spot a leak like that.

With years of training...
The hard part is getting to the leak...

oops! I'm no mechanic, but something about that doesn't quite seem right. [Dunno]
If it doesn't show up on the dipstick don't worry about it. Are you sure he doesn't have the oil slick system activated?

Nope. Reasonably common on the newer V8s from BMW. The alternator bracket has an Oring on it that plugs a useless hole in the side of the engine block. And it leaks.
sure helps them amazing burnouts,,,,

Sheesh, my Jeep leaks like that and runs fine. BMW is a pussy car if it gets all whining about that little drip.
Aren't you worried about your boss finding out how much time you spend on the internet and not turning a wrench? The NSA may be preparing a report for him.. [panic]
I woke up one morning in Baja, turned over in my sleeping bag to see a lake of 10w-30 under the engine of my 1978 Scout-II....granted, that's back in the days when we actually carried enough spare parts along to solve any problem, and Mexican mechanics can MacGyver just about anything into running.

At least it's not a Harley. When an H-D stops leaking, shut the engine off because you're out of fluids.
If its anything like my car, it could go a while like that. [hahhah-no]
Just kidding, but I do have something like 7.5qts of oil for a 3.0L 6-banger. Think they just want to up the price of their synthetic oil changes.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that stuff supposed to remain inside the engine somewhere? r is that a new gravitational fountain feature?

Your engine was one of the cleanest inside I have seen. You are clearly staying on top of those high dollar oil changes. Looked brand new inside.

I remember seeing a thread on a motorcycle forum about 10 years ago where a guy repaired a broken cylinder with jb weld and rode the bike 100 miles home on it.

Looked more like a combat video clip than a mechanics!
It was merely lifting its leg to express dominance over you.
We drove a wooden wedge in a transmission pan after it got punched on a rock. Drove it back from Winter Park, swapped the pan and we were back up there the next day.
Total loss oiling system, kind of like the speedway bikes used to use...

Yeah... Running additional HP over stock, I don't want to stick to the factory 15K per change. I do it about twice as often, sometimes a little more often than than. The Methanol injection helps to clean it too.

I always mention the panzer plate to my customers.

I have done three on one particular passat and the customer has refused to buy it, this last time it cracked his lower crankcase. He ended up giving us the car as a crusher.

Wow. That sounds like an amazingly bad idea. What happened to those amazing engineers over in Bavaria?
Throw some duct tape on it.

They actually have been at it a long time. Rocker arm shafts that wear like brake pads, heads that crack if you look at them wrong and many other things I remember from the old 3.0.

The high dollar repairs all come from the v engines. Their straight 6 is stout. Though my experiance is from 1997 on for repairing them.

Ok, so after getting it all the way apart I know why they did this. They ran out of room for oil cooler lines to bolt to the engine block. So on vehicles like this one with an oil cooler they pass the lines through the alternator bracket. If the vehicle doesn't have an oil cooler it just blocks the hole.
Still stupid hard to get out. Especially for what it pays. Motor mount and bracket bolted through the alternator bracket. Have to support the engine, drop the sub frame to get that out. Some of the bolts you can only touch with your fingers after you break them free no matter what combination of universals and extensions you use.
I was thinking that the port in the block would likely be for an oil cooler line. The idea that when the cooler isn't used, an O-ring on the bracket doesn't strike me as the best idea, particularly when the oil is under pressure. Putting a bolt in the hole with a copper or aluminum crush washer sounds better to me.
...but then I would never think that a plastic oil pan was a good idea.

The "O-Ring" in question.

What could possibly go wrong with that? [panic]
Is that something you can pick up at Ace Hardware?
This is went you never go with the base engine. Ever.
Had they gotten the better go plant, they would have had the oil cooler, Anne not a stupid gasket.

thats the power of a straight six.

That is the gasket for the oil cooler style. Through the alternator bracket. If it doesnt have the oil cooler it doesn't have the little bridge in the middle, but it is still in the same spot.
V8s in BMWs are always a pain. Straight 6 is much better.
I had a '72 Volvo with a straight 6. That thing was damn near bullet-proof and you could really wind it up.
