in years past there's been a at least a post or two about calling coyotes. Haven't seen anyone do it yet, so I guess I will. I was out Friday morning until the next front pushed in and wind kicked up. They were coming to the call pretty good. Should've had one more, but I guess ain't that the way it always goes. Used the heavy hittin' .17 Rem equipped with my S.A.S. suppressor. Longest shot was 180 yards. With these 6, that makes 77 for the winter so far. Been getting an average of $20. ea. from Petska fur for the good ones. Still quite a bit of mange out east, but seems to be better this winter than the past few winters. Any one else workin' em over this winter? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v156/songdog/024_zps95a765c7.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/songdog/media/024_zps95a765c7.jpg.html)

Went out 2 weeks ago & only had one respond, unfortunatly it was about 800 yds out & wouldn't commit. Probably threw too many different sounds out trying to get it closer.

ha I made a post in the wanted section to go hunting with someone! I love predator hunting but dont have any semi local spots to go! all my spots are an hour and 45 minutes plus away! I would love to go if you ever want someone to go with!

I just got back from AZ we ended up getting 3 fox and a coyote... it was crazy hot and they werent moving but we still had fun!

congrats on the coyotes and love the set up! this year i am getting a suppressor! I know you cant really see the backs of those coyotes but they look like some light colored yotes!

Nice. Calling/hunting predators is a skill I always wished I had picked up.

Awesome job. [Beer] I've been out to Pawnee a few times this year but haven't been able to get any dogs in close.

I think the Pawnee gets hunted pretty hard. Hunted up that way with a buddy last year who has permission on a bunch of private and when we drove through the Pawnee, seemed like there was someone shooting or camping about every where we looked. Knock on a few doors, a lot of guys will let a guy hunt coyotes.

Pawnee does get hunted very hard. It is almost a waste of time to go out there.

Here's one from today. Made a few stands, but didn't get any called in. Managed to sneak down a grass waterway quiet enough to kick this one out about
50yds in front of me. Missed the standing broad side shot, but got er on the run.

Just sold another batch yesterday and averaged $26.15 in the round. The fur buyer will come through the area one more time this season in two weeks.

Nice shot Greenflash. Always feels good to kill a runner.

TR using e-calls and bolt guns to kill coyotes, what's the world coming to. I know, weird huh? I'm loving the .17/204 so much that I haven't even taken an AR out this season. And I've learned, the Ecalls of today are just better than I ever was with a hand call, although I still blow a hand call every now and then, just for the hellof it.

My total ( 17 ) is no where near yours...nice job...In addition to your call, do you like a decoy out in front as well?

I rarely use a decoy. Really no need for them, as far as I'm concerned.

got out this morning before it got too muddy. Only had action on one stand and managed to make the best of it. 3 up and 3 downhttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v156/songdog/003_zps78779aa1.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/songdog/media/003_zps78779aa1.jpg.html).

Very cool. I need to try yotes. I'm still popping pdogs regularly out to 300+ yards, but I'd love to try larger targets at twice that!

long range coyotes aren't near as exciting as having them in your face. I've only shot a few over 300 yards this year and that's normal for called coyotes. The 3 yesterday were at 60, 100, and 140 yards.

Wow, I didn't realize you could get em to come in that close! I was thinking my .22-250 would be ideal, but my Bushmaster Varminter should be able to handle that just fine. Let me know if you need back up. That would be worth a road trip!

I've been hearing them at night at our place near Florissant.
I picked up a FoxPro electronic caller from Bass Pro yesterday.
Which sounds give the best results for yotes? I'm brand new to the game and looking for some pointers.

Hopefully TRnCo will chime in here; would love to hear what he has to say. I can get them to respond, but can't seem to get them to come in.

davsel, the key right now is to know if the coyotes you are targeting have been called to, or not, by someone else. If you'll be hunting on private property that you are sure know one else has access to, then about any flavor of rabbit distress will work just fine. It is breeding season, BUT they still gotta eat. IF you suspect that the coyotes have probably been called/hunted by someone else any time recently, then it's a good time to switch to 100% coyote vocals. What works well for me this time of year is I use some lone howls, some people call them interrogation howls, and if I get a vocal response that I believe to be over 1/2 mile, if possible with terrain, I will move to with-in 1/2 mile. Then I start with some howls and I very well may howl off and on for 3 minutes, no matter if the coyotes are vocally responding or not. Then I sit quiet for a minute or two, then I go into some whimpers, or something that is kind of quiet but something that they can hear that may peek their interest. If they don't show up to that, I then move into aggressive sounds such as switching quickly between growls and barks and then without any quiet break I go into coyote fight sounds. There are a few different coyote fight sounds available through different sources. I've found that they all seem to work equally well this time of year. If you get through a sequence or two of coyote fight and they still haven't shown up, end your stand with some coyote pup distress. Again, several sources to choose from, they all can work. IF you got with-in 1/2 mile of them, without them knowing you were around, your chances of getting them to come are pretty good with aggressive sounds right now.

TRnCo, thanks for the tips. My daughter and I set up this evening at 6:00 and were able to call one in at 7:20. I used some female and some male howls off and on, and a jackrabbit distress. I believe he may have come in closer if I'd been more patient. I got excited and missed on a 200 yard shot with the Tavor - ears are still ringing. Tomorrow I'll be better prepared with my heavy-weight long-range AR setup (and ear plugs) now that I've found a good stand not far from the road.

Alright davsel, that's a start. I took a couple friends out Friday morning and called in 2 pairs. The first pair came in to howling only, at about 5 minutes, They missed'em both even though the 1st shot was only 100 yards. The 2nd pair actually was spotted while I was doing some howling at about 550 yards. They broke loose and came to a pup coyote fight sound that I have. The boys got one of them shot at 155 yards, but missed the other. I was running a video camera and got that stand on film.
