Philip Seymour Hoffman, one of the most critically acclaimed actors of his generation, was found dead in New York on Sunday morning of an apparent drug overdose.

Mr. Hoffman, 46, was found in an apartment in the West Village around 11:30 a.m. by a friend who had become concerned at not being able to reach Mr. Hoffman, a law enforcement official said.

Investigators found a syringe in his left forearm, at least two plastic envelopes with what appeared to be heroin nearby, and five empty plastic envelopes in a trash bin, the official said.

“It’s pretty apparent that it was an overdose,” the official said. “The syringe was in his arm.”

On Sunday afternoon, Mr. Hoffman’s family released a statement saying: “We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone. This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers.”

As news of Mr. Hoffman’s death spread, fellow actors as well as fans took to Twitter (http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/02/02/philip-seymour-hoffman-is-remembered-by-fellow-actors-on-twitter/) to express their admiration for his acting and grief over his death. Ellen DeGeneres, who will host the Oscars ceremony in March over which Mr. Hoffman’s death is likely to cast a pall, posted: “Philip Seymour Hoffman was a brilliant, talented man. The news this morning is shocking and sad. My heart goes out to his loved ones.”

Mr. Hoffman won an Academy Award in 2006 for best actor for his role in the film “Capote,” in which he portrayed the author Truman Capote as Mr. Capote researched the book “In Cold Blood.”

Known for his scene-stealing supporting roles, Mr. Hoffman was nominated for the Academy Award for best supporting actor three times: for the 2012 film “The Master,” the 2008 film “Doubt,” and the 2007 film “Charlie Wilson’s War.” He also recently had a role in the hugely popular “The Hunger Games” films.

Last May, Variety reported (http://variety.com/2013/film/news/philip-seymour-hoffman-leaves-drug-rehab-1200490532/) that Mr. Hoffman had completed a detox program for substance abuse, including snorting heroin. He had struggled with alcohol and drugs as a young man and told (http://www.cbsnews.com/videos/philip-seymour-hoffman/) the CBS program ‘'60 Minutes” in 2006 that he had been sober since he was 22.

Mr. Hoffman had been acting in films for the last two decades, often transforming physically for each new role. He was prolific as well, sometimes filming several movies in a year and appearing in plays on Broadway.

“I try to live my life in such a way that I don’t have profound regrets,” Mr. Hoffman told (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/21/magazine/21hoffman-t.html?pagewanted=all) The New York Times in 2008. “That’s probably why I work so much. I don’t want to feel I missed something important.”

Mr. Hoffman had three young children, a son and two daughters, with his partner, Mimi O’Donnell, a costume designer.
Outside the apartment building where Mr. Hoffman was found on Bethune Street, more than 100 people had gathered Sunday afternoon to mourn the actor’s death. Near the crowd, two men who identified themselves as friends of Mr. Hoffman embraced and cried.

“He’s a local. He’s a fixture in this neighborhood,” said Christian McCulloch, 39, who said that he lives nearby. “You see him with his kids in the coffee shops. He is so sweet. It’s desperately sad.”

Didn't really care for him as an actor but I feel for the kids who will grow up without a dad, even if he was a junkie.

I feel bad for the kids but no sympathy or regret for him. Anyone with everything he had going for him that shoots heroin is just pure dumbass and as has been pointed out, he was an extreme left-wing ideologue. I just wish he'd taken Michael Moore and Rosie O'Donnell with him.

http://www.examiner.com/article/bloomberg-group-used-heroin-abusing-actor-hoffman-anti-gun-video

In other words, he was abusing drugs during the time he provided voice-over services oozing with concern “for the children” in a professionally-produced media campaign calling for increased infringement on the right of clean and sober Americans to keep and bear arms, meaning Hoffman was engaging in illegal and grossly irresponsible behavior that actually disqualified him from having a gun himself.

See, this is why you need to reform your behavior ... guys like him are almost certainly destined for Hell so it behooves you to improve your chances for the other place if you don't want to spend Eternity getting chummy with him.

I am around addicts everyday I work, I work in a jail. Go figure. I used to really despise and loathe them. I mean how can you do that to yourself, and have any self respect. I still treated them with respect/professionally but that's the way I used to feel.

Now after having several family members end up like them has caused my thought process to change. Some of them liked to party and got started that way. Another was an athlete who was injured and had a doctor who liked to over medicate and yes there are more. Another was found in pretty much the same position Hoffman was, with a needle hanging out of his arm between the toilet and tub.

IMHO it is easy to say a lot of things we all say when it doesn't directly impact us, but once it hits home at least some of the old attitudes and beliefs change, and not always for the better. I guess I have matured, meaning gotten older, and still hate the drugs and those who peddle them but I also now hate the sin but not the sinner as I once did.

I wholeheartedly agree with the other members about his kids, as they were collateral damage from his disease and drug use.

And I will agree to a certain point. I fully understand how even a brush with smack can drag one in or make one realize just what is going on. That said there also comes a point where even understanding does not excuse the fact that when your addiction overcomes ALL common sense where you threaten family members with bodily harm unless you get what you want will unleash the hounds of hell on your ass..... Do not be surprised when one drives 1300 miles and has a talk with you.

Just some thoughts on this subject.

I don't disagree with you and I don't excuse them for the path they put themselves on. If they had not taken the first step there would be no addiction for them or the pain and destruction they leave in their wake.

The problem with them driving any distance to see you is the reason they came. Unless they are in a 12 step program actually working the steps and are up to the 8-9 steps; they stopped by to get something from you. Usually money a place to stay or something else. They are the most accomplished liars in the world, well right next to politicians. They will use you until you are all used up and then come back for more. You can still love them or at least who they were before... But you will never be able to trust them, ever.

Am I the only one that finds a little but of irony here? He stated out children and streets would be safer if we banned guns, then dies of a heroin overdose... Did you hear the one about a kettle and a pot?

At this point, I'm actually pretty offended that the media has spent as much time on his self-inflicted death as it has. How about they move on to something of importance like where we stand on the investigation into improper use of the IRS or how the hell Lois Lerner qualifies for retirement vs. prosecution for malicious and illegal use of official powers?

I feel sorry for his kids, but I have no sympathy for drug users and the harm they inflict on themselves. Apparently he couldnt deal with real world issues the way most people do and felt drugs was his only way to cope. He was selfish to think of himself and not his family before sticking that needle in his arm. Was he really that great of an actor? Other than Capote the only thing I remember him in was Along Came Poly and "White Lightning!", other than that; irrelevant. Sad how the media celebrate his life and death and ignore the fact he was a hardcore drug user. Its not like you start on heroine, there was probably a lead up of abuse of other drugs ie: cocaine that lead him down this path. Sorry but not sad at all.

He was on a multi day bender when he died. He was supposed to have his 3 children during his bender, and he bailed on them.
He was traveling around the country drinking,. and shooting up...... His kids will be way better off with their inheritance than him in their lives!

A $10k a month habit? What a dick.

I don't know what that equates to in terms of heroin, but from a cost standpoint, I doubt $10K is deemed all that significant to someone in his tax bracket.
