View Full Version : Do you get bored shooting .22s?

Several years ago I put together a nice Ruger 10/22. Aftermarket barrel, stock, installed some Volquartsen trigger parts which lightened up the trigger nicely, scope, etc. It shoots pretty well; about .35" or so at 50 yards. The problem is, I never shoot the damn thing. I'll usually bring a .22 along when I go to the range (I also have a Ruger MkII target pistol) but I never get around to shooting them. After shooting the larger calibers at 100 to 300 yards, shooting a rifle at 50 yards seems kind of boring. I guess I could shoot the .22 at 100 yards, but I'd rather just use the AR or R700s.

Anyone else feel this way?

(Mods: I didn't put this in the rimfire section because it seems (to me, at least [Flower]) like more of a "general discussion" thread. I'm not asking any specific questions on what parts to use, etc.)

No, I never get bored shooting .22's. If you get bored, you are doing it wrong. Probably holding it wrong too. [Coffee]

Wouldn't that be about as boring as shooting "larger calibers" at 100 yards? [facepalm]

I get bored with 22s as well. I guess I just need more noise and recoil.

I haven't shot a round of .22 in almost 2 years. I sold my .22 when ammo had disappeared. It'd be rotting away right now otherwise.

I don't get bored, just have enough variety in the 22lr selection. My 10/22 collects the most dust.

I guess it all depends on what you are doing with your 22. My sons and I have a blast taking out ground squirrels on a ranch in the mountains. We never get bored when there is a pink mist following the trigger squeeze.

You should donate your lonely ammo and .22 firearms to me for a great price, I'll take em off your hands.

A buddy of mine got out to 400 yards with his .22 consistently.

Nope, never bored. Anything you're doing wrong is amplified when you're shooting .22 so precision .22 work can be a downright challenge.

.22LR is my most affordable caliber to shoot, so I love it. The P22 always seems to make it into the range bag.

Which might make it interesting (shooting at 100 yards). I said shooting a .22 at 50 is boring. I don't know how interesting it is to shoot .22 at 100; I've never done it.

Like Ray1970 said, more noise and recoil makes it more fun. [Sniper][M9130]

All true. I'd go a step farther and say .22s are harder to shoot than centerfire. The bullet is in the barrel so long it gives you lots of opportunity to screw it up. Master the .22 and you'll be a hero with your centerfire bolt gun.

Bring your .22 to one of the local .22 precision matches. Shooting a tiny target at 150 yards in wind in anything but boring.

That would definitely be a challenge. [Awesom] What size groups does he shoot at 400?

Between the adventure of finding good .22 ammo and knee deep snow in my fav range.. Hell no

He was shooting at a steel target. He has since moved to AK. Sad days :-(
spongejosh can vouch for the .22 awesomeness. :-D

Video was soon after he got the rifle.

PLUS, nothing like taking my Single-six out. 100 yards offhand consistently hitting people-sized silhouette. I am going to sell my AR-7 Survival rifle and replace it with my Ruger single six for bug out gear.

numbers will be rifle/ammo dependent but this is a good starting point out to 300:

Shooting my mp 15-22 out to 600 yards is some real fun. Granted I don't make many hits but thats part of the fun.

With what I miss in .22 recoil and noise I make up for in shear volume of ammo downrange.

+1 I love my 22, this is the match I try to never miss:

Want to make it interesting, try the 22lr pistols out to 100 yards. Then push those rimfires for all they are worth in a rifle.
It is exciting when you can see the bullet impact in a reactive target (balloon?) with a rainbow trajectory at over 400 yards with a 22lr rifle.
That and you need to pack a sack lunch for the flight time. I prefer a KFC chicken bucket with sides. Take a friend and make it a competition and a lunch.

I just picked up a Ruger 22/45 lite and 10/22 takedown, excited for when the weather warms and I can get them both out. It's been awhile since I shot a .22. Looking forward to taking my girls out also (7 & 9). The 10/22 will be a tactical project. Will get photos up when complete.

I shot more .22LR in the past 2 years than my entire life combined. Realized the benefits of it as a lower cost trainer, reading wind, getting my fundamentals back, etc. I like shooting anything with a cartridge and a trigger.

This is exactly why they make trainers in .22lr! Same specs, size, weight, etc. but in a smaller caliber which is MORE influenced by the environment. Makes for some excellent training!!

^This! My daughters can sure put a lot of lead downrange in an amazingly quick fashion!!

As was mentioned, bring out the revolvers in .22lr and keep increasing target distance! That adds some challenge...

FWIW, I do not believe that the words "bored" and "shooting" should ever be used in the same sentence! [UZI]

Usually with me it is "wish I could get out to the range" and "wish I was a member of a range" and "I need to get out shooting more often".

If I ever get bored with shooting, sex, food or fast cars, I assume I will be 6 feet underground.

I can do 100 with a 6" model 17, 200 easy with the 20" 1894 marlin, Iron sights. 22 revolver and lever shooting, makes you appreciate simple firearms.

Shooting any caliber that doesn't involve a varmint at the other end is boring to me now. That being said, my .22 LR bolt gun is awesome on them out to 100 yards, with my longest hit at about 150 yards. Nice, quiet, and deadly with the right ammo.

I love the Ruger 10/22 because all of the options available, especially the aftermarket stocks. That being said, I do admit that if I don't shoot them for a while my attention wanders.

I can say that a target can still isn't boring.
Tie a string to a tennis or racket ball and hang in the wind so it moves (swings) out at 2-300 yards. It can be interesting even for center-fire guns.

What is that? A Red Jacket 10/22?

I've got some good spinner targets for .22, just need to find a good outdoor shooting spot where I can use them... When I took them up to pawnee, they were a lot of fun, definitely more so than shooting paper. I've also got some clips that hold clay targets, want to take them out for some fun targets as well.

And I enjoy shooting my little .22 six shooter a lot as well. But I always feel the need to finish up a range visit with my 1911, just to prove to everyone at the range how manly I am.

Isn't that the one that they did custom for the zombie episode? I think Max Brooks was helping design it or something. ZK-22
