I've been watching a Trans Aero Ltd AS350 lifting supplies/equipment to the top of Mt Bailey from the TJ's Wood Products yard for about the last hour. The pilot's done a helluva job and it's very interesting to watch him fighting the wind while the ground crews hook up the slings. He probably made 10 or 12 lifts to the top, mostly taking things up...but he did bring a few loads down.

Not sure of the reason for his flying technique but he took off, slid backwards and at altitude transitioned to backwards/sideways flight all the way to the top where he dropped the load. Maybe to stay pointed into the wind? I dunno.

That's gotta be scary as hell, flying a chopper with a longass cable and a load on it that you can't even see. I'd be scared to death.

Reminds of helicopter logging. That's some impressive stuff.

Cool photos, thanks.

One of my customers flies helicopters and was taking loads of sawdust up the Poudre and dumping them in the burn area. I watched him and another pilot making the trips up and down the river. The guy is older, mid 60's, a veteran and lives in Idaho. He always stops by the shop to say hello when he flies into town.

Just remember to let the load hit the ground before you touch it.

Nope, this one. Kinda long, but talk about steady hands, nerves of steel, and big clanking cast iron balls!
