View Full Version : Westminster Tissue Creeper
Hey All,
Tonight I had a knock on the door and as I peaked out of the door pep hole and it was black, (i forgot to turn on my porch light) and I turned the light on to see who was there. At this point this guy knew I was aware he was there so I went ahead and opened the door. My dog is not well behaved and likes to jump at people at the door, so I went ahead and held him back right my right hand. As I opened the door I was greeted with a guy maybe in his early 20's. He had a black coat, black hat backwards with a flat bill, a lip piercing. He began saying that they are giving out small travel side tissues for an opinion. I asked him " My opinion on what?" he his response was that the opinion was about maintenance and if I am willing to wait he go back to his car and grab his stuff. I then told him that I was no interested in participating and wished him luck else where. He then said that he gets paid per opinion and it would mean a lot to him, and I told him no again. During this entire converstaion he had a smirk on his face and awkward stare. I watched him back to his car where he was the passenger and they drove out of our cul-de-sac they left the neighbor not stopping at any other house. We are two cul-de-sac's down from the neighbor door entrance. What else that I found uncomfortable with is that he said he had to go back to his car to get the material for my opinion. Why not bring the material with you to the door? My gut feeling tells me this was not legitimate but I do not know. I went next door to talk to my neighbor and she said he rang her doorbell but she did no answer. Has anyone experienced this type of door-to-door walk ups? What are you opinions of this? Do you think my gut feeling is right?
These are sweeping the west metro area. There have been a high number of them around Wheat Ridge and Arvada. The door-to-door sales people are at it again and they are VERY aggressive. Only way they get the hint is to be rude to them. Don't answer the door without a gun on you or in hand.

Why did you open your door? Why did you even engage said solicitor? WHY?
You "Gut Feeling" is weak. Since you opend your door in the first place. That 'feeling' should have told you to ignore him, while calling the local PD.

Something your girlfriend keeps close, when you travel.
I know.. I know.. I shouldn't have opened the door. It was an overall awkward experience and it was not until opening the door did I get an uneasy feeling. Yes they were the travel sided tissues.
Sounds to me like he was casing your place, hoping no one would answer...

Move to the mountains.
I had a guy knock on our door once. Scared the piss out of me.... The way I answered the door scared shit out of him.
He was just at the wrong house due to some bad directions... I'm sure he was harmless as he kept apologizing while wiping.

Hopefully he noticed this.
It's hard not too notice say the dog is about 110 lbs. Ha.

Haha! I have had this exact experience. My dog is so old and deaf at this point that people acually can get to the door. Before he went deaf, you could hardly get into the driveway without him freaking out.
When I first moved up here (14 years ago) I came home one day and saw a business card tacked to the railing I my deck. It was from one of the Gilpin Sheriff boys and he wrote on the back to call him. When I did he told me he thought my dog would shred him if he took one step onto the deck. It turned out that he was looking into another matter in the neighborhood. We had a good laugh.
Dogs are good.
I had this same thing happen, even down to the lip ring and smirk. I am 100% sure that he was casing the place. I answered the door because I was expecting a package that day. He started off on his smart ass spiel, "Sir do you use any of these products?" and held out some travel sized tissue and some q-tips. I told him that I was not interested in anything that he was selling, and no sooner than I got the words out of my mouth and my dog freaked out and was absolutely out to kill. I have never seen her like that, she usually barks and stays back. But this time it was all that I could do to keep her from getting outside and tearing him up. I think that he knew this and took off running with his pants sagged down below his ass. Did not need to say another word. Sometimes I still wonder what she (my dog) knew that I did not.
These situations remind me of the girl with the dragon tattoo scene towards the end.
I don't open my door anymore. I yell out my questions from inside. Even for police...ask to see badge through the window first.
I havent heard of this scheme yet. But for sure casing the joint.

I dont get solicitors out my way, but once the Jehovah Witnesses stopped by while I was practicing archery with a friend. We were polite, but I guess that they were nervous cuz they left very quickly. Or, maybe it was because I was carrying my P220. Or, maybe it was the two Great Pyrs barking at the door. Coulda been because my wife was wearing camo her 1911 and carrying throwing knives. Come to think of it we haven't had any JWs visit since that day.

One thing I see from the responses. Outside lights are not on. Why is that? Pennies per day for outside lighting vs. intruders within your perimeter. I don't understand, with everyone here owning at least 2 guns, why the he'll you're frugal when it comes to first line defense.
Interesting… I agree with the comments that they were probably casing your place. Why would he have to go back to the car to get something…
My wife doesn't like us keeping the front porch light on as a matter of practice, she says if you do, then you don't turn it on, it would signal to a potential thief you aren't home. I tell her they'd have to be watching our house over many days to notice that behavior… anyways, I installed a "motion detector" type light so it comes on if someone comes to the door.
I usually glance through the side window to see if its someone I know. If not I bring my handgun with me. I've also got two very large dogs that I don't restrain. I also have a sturdy storm-door while not hugely sturdy, its gonna take some effort as opposed to a screen door to get through… I never open that door and its locked. I figure if someone was going to try to bum rush me, it'd give me the few seconds to pull my firearm...
All great points. Glad to know that others have experienced this. We usually keep our light on which is why I was surprised when looking through the peep hole that it was not on. Great lessons learned here.

This is my thought too. I have always thought it was crazy that darn near all my neighbours have dark houses. My lights are on, front and back, from dusk till dawn.
It sure sounds to me like your place just got cased. I would report the suspicious person and description of the car.
And Ginsue has a great point about making sure the back is secure. My gate to the backyard is locked at all times. The only way anyone is getting back there is climbing over the fence. And with the lights on, climbing over the fence is going to get some attention.
Also, I will always have a locking storm door that opens out on the front. Three reasons. #1 - If I answer the door to talk to someone outside, it's with the storm door locked...Keeps us separated slightly. #2- If someone wants to aggressively enter my home by kicking in the front door, they first have to break the glass on the storm door, un-lock it, open it and then kick the main door...delay a determined home invader. Breaking glass will alert me and my dog. And last, if I'm dumb and open the door to talk with anyone I shouldn't have and they try to enter while I'm at the door, my porch is small and raised which forces everyone to step back when the door opens. You simply can't step around the opening storm door because there is a wall on one side. You must step back. Getting bad guys to step back is good.
Dog is always allowed to be by my side barking at anyone on the porch until I command her otherwise. I want everyone to know there is a dog here.
Gun is always present when at the door.
Rocks (noisy) and thorny bushes (ouch) planted outside under the windows.
Door from garage to house is also always locked. Wireless garage door opener capability is disabled at night. I've heard some badguys have the ability to hack openers...don't know if that's true but I'm not going to risk it.

how about a simple dawn/dusk sensor, then you don't have to worry about turning the light on at all.

who would buy tissues from a door to door salesman? frankly, why would you buy anything from a door to door salesman?
I don't know if UPS needs to hire more drivers or what the issue is, but our UPS deliveries are almost always after 7pm and several times after 8pm so I tend to turn on the porch light and open the door.....I've not encountered any tissue sales people yet though.

Back when I was young and lived in California, this sort of thing happened at my folks house. Group of three went door to door until they found an empty house (my parents). One broke a side window and let the others in through the front door. Ransacked the place. What was odd was that they took junk. Passed over firearms and good jewelry for cheap electronics and costume jewelry. They also had a 1911, we knew this as when my folks arrived home they found a loaded magazine that they dropped in the living room.
This was many years ago and neighbors called the police when three guys that looked out of place were walking back to the bus-stop. Guys got arrested and my parents got all their costume jewelry and cheap electronics back. Sadly this sort of thing is on the rise in my folks neighborhood.
Unless they are girl scouts or Jehovas, I assume they are up to no good.

UPS is never at my place before dark. Those guys work their asses off.
Fortunately at my Condo there is a front door before you get to my door... and my door bell doesn't work so I never get any solicitors.
Having a dog that doesn't like strangers helps a lot too. Even if she won't harm a fly, she sounds like she'll eat your face off.
At my old place I had a kid come to the door that was supposedly selling subs to the Post. I let the dog bark and growl at him the whole time he stood at the door as I repeatedly told him I had the internet and wasn't interested.

-1 for not packing in the house!
In my neighborhood, folks ring our doorbell all the time. Girl scouts, highschool fundraising, damn roof canvassers, frozen steak salesmen, wrong address chinese delivery and hot arapahoe high school cheerleaders begging money for their competition trip. This is despite the no solicitation sign on the wall. The only ones that couldnt find my home is UPS and FEDEX drivers.

My UPS driver happens to be the UPS driver for my work. They work those people to death. The little handheld thing they have? GPS tracking. If they stay in one place too long (couple minutes) they get a phone call. He delivers to all the commercial addresses on his route, then after business hours he does the houses in my neighborhood.
On the original topic:
-1 for not packing in the house!
This.
It is very rare to get a visitor at the door, and I like that. When the doorbell rings, I go for the second gun and the wife does for hers before I even go to the door.
They could have been looking for a female to answer the door that was home alone, and without a dog. Easier to overpower and get inside without glass breaking noises, etc. Plus, if someone is home generally the alarm is not on.

Naw man.. the union is watching over them* I have a few clients who are UPS driver. ATM, they hired too many people, so some of them got short days or drive tandem w/ an assistant. Some make close to 5 digit as drivers.
I think what would concern me the most in this situation is home invasion and not making myself vulnerable. For the most part, the only people who come on my property unannounced are neighbors and delivery guys so I am concerned about anybody I don't know. I did have one guy a few years back who came to the door at the same time I was coming down my stairs with one of my AR15s who I saw through the window in the door (I had the firearm completely by coincidence). The guy turned white; he just wanted to ask a few questions about the house for sale adjacent to my property; never saw him again.
Anyhow, your house as well as how you carry yourself says a lot about you. A few years ago, my car battery died at the Buffalo Creek shooting area and I had to walk out with my kid. It was Christmas time, and I found a house with numerous lights and decorations and went up to the door to ask for help because I profiled the people as likely to open the door and help of which they did. This can be either good or bad depending on who is looking at you and your home.
Interesting… I agree with the comments that they were probably casing your place. Why would he have to go back to the car to get something…

Leaving the light on all the time is much better than having someone hiding in the (dark) bushes to jump your wife when she gets home.

Showing a visible firearm to someone at your door can go both ways. It may let the shady charater know that you mean business and it's the wrong house to break into or it may act as a light bulb for them and give them more reason to get into your house ...when you're not home of course.
Or it could get you arrested, depending on how it is visible. Menacing with a deadly weapon is a felony.

Or wire it to a daylight switch so that you don't have to worry about remembering to turn it on.
Motion lights at the front and rear of the house. Porch light on at dusk, off when I get up in the morning (usually about 0530). If the rear motion light comes on, I'm instantly in Condition Orange, because there is no direct access to the back yard except over a 6 ft fence or a locked gate. I carry in the house about 95% of the time, and always when the doorbell rings.

I have a timer for outside lights. It replaces the light light switch. Also pay for home security.
I also never answer the door for anyone. I look through the hole on door and that's it. Our blinds in the front of house are also closed when not there and at night. So people can't just look in and see what we have.

Much so-called security lighting is designed with little thought for how eyes -- or criminals -- operate. Marcus Felson, a professor at the School of Criminal Justice at Rutgers University, has concluded that lighting is effective in preventing crime mainly if it enables people to notice criminal activity as it's taking place, and if it doesn't help criminals to see what they're doing. Bright, unshielded floodlights -- one of the most common types of outdoor security lighting in the country -- often fail on both counts, as do all-night lights installed on isolated structures or on parts of buildings that can't be observed by passersby (such as back doors). A burglar who is forced to use a flashlight, or whose movement triggers a security light controlled by an infrared motion sensor, is much more likely to be spotted than one whose presence is masked by the blinding glare of a poorly placed metal halide "wall pack." In the early seventies, the public-school system in San Antonio, Texas, began leaving many of its school buildings, parking lots, and other property dark at night and found that the no-lights policy not only reduced energy costs but also dramatically cut vandalism.
The University of Illinois conducted a study in Chicago where they increased the amount of light in an area with crime, and crime went up. Clanton Associates developed lighting systems for security at prisons and military bases where the amount of light was decreased and security improved.
So it ends up that criminals have eyes and need to see too. Basically lighting decreases "fear of crime" but increases actual crime.

There are also many studies that show otherwise. I will post a few later.
And BTW, Clanton Associates is located outside Boulder and is one the the KEY players in the Dark Sky movement. One of the main benefits of reducing light a prisons is reducing night time light pollution. That particular design firm is well know for aggressively pursuing the Dark Sky goal. Me thinks there's some bias there. If you want to reduce light pollution at a prison, what's the best way to sell it? Yup, tell them it will be safer.

Most burglars are under the influence of something and are sensitive to light is what all the studies I've read said regarding more lighting around the house.

Wow, that's pretty scary. It's a good thing you were home!
I'm worried about home invasions and the troubles that have been in the news lately. My neighborhood has a lot of elderly people and young families.
We need to install better outdoor lighting. We haven't had solicitors since I hung 'No Trespassing' sign. I think I'm earning the reputation of being one mean b!tch.
But I know we could improve our home's safety.

Seems like their hours of operation are at night. They knocked on my door at 7:30 p.m.
I did notify Westminster PD of the incident and the Det. advised that she has been receiving many of these notifications but they are legitimate company who offers tissue for door prizes. I still agree with the members here that he was scoping out my place. Purely based on his actions.
Just got a ring at my bell. I looked out the door and saw a tall white girl (with a nose ring) with a thing of tissues in her hand. I held my hand up and waved her away and said, "No." I walked away, then came back to just to check and she was still standing there. I looked through the window and said, "Get off my porch." She was seriously surprised, frowned and walked back down the drive. The pewter Chevy Minivan was across the street and there were a bunch of other people walking down the street going door to door. I noticed that they didn't even go up the walk at my neighbor across the street who has a hand written "No solicitors" sign on his porch.
On a funny note, I had told my wife about this when the thread started. She was laying down trying to take a nap. I said, "It's those fucking tissue people I told you about." She SHOT up out of bed and ran to the front door to get a look at them; all worked up.
Good catch that they didn't go to your neighbors with the no solicitors sign. They are annoying! I loved your comment to your wife by the way. I'm still rolling. [ROFL2]

I have a "No Soliciting" sign on my screen door, it is very conspicuous and at eye level when you are walking up to my door.
I am amazed at the amount of hawkers that either don't see it or don't pay attention to it.
When they knock on my door it really pisses me off and I always ask them one of two things: "How far did you get in school?" or "Can you read?"."
"I'm a senior in high school." or "Yes I can read."
"Then why the fawk are you banging on my door trying to sell something?"
The diatribe is usually the same from them: "But I'm not soliciting or selling anything?"
"Then WTF are you doing here? Leave NOW."
"But, but....."
"What part of "No Soliciting" don't you understand?"
SLAM!
The wife always get pissy, says there is no need to be rude. Excuse me? They are the ones that are rude and obviously can't read or ignore the sign. Fuck them.
In all this time I have only had one or two people apologize for missing the sign. Now if it is a kid pimping his football team or such I politely decline but if it is HS age or over, game on.
I hate these door to door slags.

If they solicit in Aurora, they need to have an ID from the city, and on the application it says to abide by the no soliciting signs and that they need to wear the ID while conducting business. I am sure a complaint to the department of the city that issues these ID's/permits would get the permit revoked.

I had a little thug come to my door a couple weeks ago, I knew he was up to no good when I looked out the window and seen him! I opened the door and there stood a 12-13 year old with a snow shovel! He was trying to extort me out of $5 to shovel my side walk or so he claimed! I opened the door to let my trained attack cat chase him off, he won't be back until it snows again!!!
So I suppose now you are going to tell us the cat shoveled the walk[Coffee]
