My son is 12, pretty puny and doesn't like loud noise or recoil haha! But we are taking him private land turkey hunting this year so I need to find him a gun. I am leaning towards the 12 gauge with reduced recoil loads. I have ammo for 12 and 20 gauge. I was contemplating one of the cheaper over unders, a good gas driven gun would be good but I don't know of any cheaper ones.

Any reccomendations on a cheaper gun a 12 year old can work that won't dislocate his shoulder?

How about a single shot, Rossi shotguns are fairly inexpensive.

A single shot, cut the stock down and put a really good sorbethane pad on it. I've seen used ones under $100. You could just buy him a VersaMax and tell him it is his college fund so he is on his own there. :)

Here is my single shot h&r with a 18.5" barrel and youth stock

It handles like a toy would be perfect for a younger kid

I have 100$ into the shotgun and 40$ into the stock (it's a chote)

Mossy makes several different versions of the Youth 500 in 20 Ga. It's less expensive than the youth Remington 870. H&R Pardner or Mossy's Maverick are less expensive still. Of course they are all pumps.

You may be able to find a Mossberg Silver Reserve Youth 20 Ga. at a Walmart somewhere to satisfy the O/U configuration, no idea what they cost though. Buds shows them over $550.

USSG has some inexpensive semi-autos if you can find a dealer (and them in stock.) http://eaacorp.com/

Good luck finding what you want.

Shoot mini shells... minimal recoil to start with.

The 7.5 ounce Aguila minis are probably a bit anemic for Turkey. Full power 2 3/4" #4 Flite Control is as low as I would go.

Edit. 7.5 shot size, one ounce load.

Get an 870 or a 500 and put a limbsaver buttpad on it.

My 11 year old daughter doesn't like the Mossberg 500 20 guage, so I would recommend a 410 and let him enjoy shooting shotguns first...

I have always heard a 20 ga hits harder than a 12 ga.

I actually just picked this up for my godson a couple of weeks ago. He just turned 12 and suffers from long legs and short arms syndrome. It's a New England Arms Pardner 20 ga Youth model. Found it at Cabela's in the used section for $100

IDK about that but when I switched from 20 to 12 I couldn't even tell the difference. Had to do with the 12ga being heavier.
