NASCAR? Pfft. Real racing: We understand but it is on TV. BTW those cars have doors and real race cars do not, just saying.... [Flower] http://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac44/jerrymrc/cars/oldgroup155.jpg (http://s884.photobucket.com/user/jerrymrc/media/cars/oldgroup155.jpg.html)

Those aren't even cars. They're just a roll cage with a fiberglass shell over the top of it. And le Mans style racing is on TV plenty.

The first couple minutes of this broadcast alone are why I love ALMS

I like all forms of motorsport racing. Never really seen the purpose of the dick measuring discussion of this racing versus that kind. Its all good to me. NASCAR, F1, WRC, Tudor, SCCA club races, SCORE, whatever. About the only thing I don't like is NHRA drag racing

Personally, I'd take crashing at 150mph a foot off the ground versus 250mph and 50 ft off the ground.

They get up to 200mph on the TT course but at least in the airplane you have some structure around you to absorb the impact .. and not just a layer of leather LOL

IF the bike had an equal power to weight ratio it might stand a chance LOL ... tho probably not with twice the contact patches with probably 10 times the surface area.. each.

but I'd like to see how an F1 car does on the TT course heh.

clublights
02-17-2014, 19:59
I stand corrected.. I thought the f1 cars had a much better power to weight ratio then motogp bikes.. they are about the same with some bikes even beating out the cars...

so it's all about downforce and contact patches.

Laguna Seca is a great track .. and the only thing good about daytona is it's the first race and it's kinda neat to see the bikes on the banking... but that gets boring fast.

Downside- AMA Superbike has an event at Laguna, but GP now does the Red Bull Grand Prix America in TX. No more LS for GP, which sucks, because when they brought GP back to LS in 2005 (11 year break) Nicky Hayden won it back to back in '05 and '06. USA! USA!

Downforce sucking the car onto the track.

The old 1990's Indy Cars had enough downforce that they could drive on an inverted track at over 100mph and not fall off. I would imagine the modern F1 cars could beat that.

Several teams started to experiment with the now familiar wings in the late 1960s. Race car wings operate on exactly the same principle as aircraft wings, only in reverse. Air flows at different speeds over the two sides of the wing (by having to travel different distances over its contours) and this creates a difference in pressure, a physical rule known as Bernoulli's Principle. As this pressure tries to balance, the wing tries to move in the direction of the low pressure. Planes use their wings to create lift, race cars use theirs to create downforce. A modern Formula One car is capable of developing 3.5 g lateral cornering force (three and a half times its own weight) thanks to aerodynamic downforce. That means that, theoretically, at high speeds they could drive upside down.

Formula 1 cars around 1999-2004/5 were very dependent on aerodynamic grip, because they had a grooved tires/tyres.
After those years, F1 went back to slick tires. They are still very dependent on aerodynamic grip, but not as much as those 6-7 F1 years.
Good aerodynamics is the key to the winning the F1. Good engine and driver is important, but if you look at all the teams Adrian Newey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adrian_Newey) went to.
Williams early 90s, McLaren-Mercedes late 90s. Redbull-renalt(infinity) now... Win win win.

Stock car drivers mainly depends on mechanical (frictional) grip, so, they have mind set to slow down when they turn corner. However, F1 cars, depends on certain corners, you might have to accelerate to get the velocity upto certain kmh/mph to successfully turn the corners.
