A mysterious cluster of severe birth defects in rural Washington state is confounding health experts, who say they can find no cause, even as reports of new cases continue to climb.

Federal and state officials won’t say how many women in a three-county area near Yakima, Wash., have had babies with anencephaly, a heart-breaking condition in which they’re born missing parts of the brain or skull. And they admit they haven't interviewed any of the women in question, or told the mothers there's a potentially widespread problem.

But as of January 2013, officials with the Washington state health department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had counted nearly two dozen cases in three years, a rate four times the national average.

Did these people forget about the nuclear accident in Japan in 2011? There have been sources citing not to even eat Pacific Ocean fish for a couple more years!
Those abort the USS Ronald Reagan have filed lawsuits against Japan for cancers and illness sustained after relief efforts following the nuclear accident.

I'm sorry, but how do people not put 2 and 2 together? It's not Bizarre... it's science!

Science might ask why a small cluster in rural central Washington State and not in the much larger coastal communities like Seattle and Tacoma.

^^ Exactly...or anywhere else along the coast. More likely something a little more localized.

Most likely explanation is illegal toxic waste dumping near that community polluting the aquifer.

Fukushima isn't the cause. We get more radiation living at 5000' than anyone near Fukushima gets.

Sometimes clusters just occur without a "reason". That's statistics.

Im literally from the city next to that. Theres a multitude of reasons and fukashima is not one.

Clint is on the right track.

Look up articles on Hanford tank farms.

+1

An interesting recent book I read was Plutopia by Kate Brown. One part of the book focuses on Richland, WA. Very interesting read and the way she contrasts Richland with Ozersk in Russia and how the nuclear weapon production facilities were constructed and how the communities developed was fascinating.

Correlation doesn't equal causation. Until peer reviewed med journals come out, it's all speculation. Don't be like the dems who try to correlate gun statistics to strip away our rights.

Itll be ignored until its truly seruous. Which is the attitude of the area.

The article on the tank farm is what they publicly admit. The real facts are far wose.

I think this has been going on for decades. It happens more frequently in big cities all over this country. Hasn't everyone noticed that it appears the number of people with half a brain is definitely a growing problem and not just on the left coast.

Even then it won't because you won't have enough source cases.
Peer reviewed isn't the end all, either, sadly. Having gone through the process a few times on both sides, it is amazing how petty scientists can be. $0.02
