New rifle for Colorado assignment

After a lot of assessment I decided on a rifle and what round I wanted. Hopefully I can make some friends in the Colorado Springs area to hunt with! In a few weeks I should have my new Savage 111 chambered in 338 Win Mag. I found a nice lightweight wood thumbhole stock I'm thinking of getting, as I already knew the plastic that comes on it isn't the hottest. A Hogue stock is also a strong option. I may also get the barrel threaded and put a mild comp on. I'm excited to zero my scope and try a few shots on paper before a good hunt. Just thought I would share!

Sounds nice. My only suggestion is to stay away from the hogue stock. I had one on a .257 and could not figure out why i was getting poor groups from the bench. Turns out the stock had enough flex in it that when it was on the bench or shooting from sticks it would flex up and put pressure against the barrel. I changed to a mcmillian stock and that fixed the problem.

Sounds like you have a plan. No way in hell I would shoot a 338, but to each their own. Savage is my bolt gun of choice.

I'm pretty sure I'll do the Boyds, but I'm glad you said that. I'll check to see if McMillian has good options for mine in particular. I bought this rifle knowing I wasn't going to keep the stock cheap plastic.

Just curious on why the 338WM over a 300WM? I had a 338 but found it lacked in the long distance over the 300. I had a hogue over old rubber stock on a 308 I had and it was awesome, my buddy still has his on his 243 coyote rifle, both had no accuracy problems.

338 is fun to shoot though, I have a video of my wife shooting my savage standing in the wind, she shot it pretty good. I sold it to eventually replace with a 300WM savage.

It was a relatively arbitrary decision. If I ever go to Alaska, a 1 year possibility, Id be happy with the choice. You can get 200 grain 338WM that shoots nearly flat as the 300WM, or step up to 225, 250+ grain.

With a .338 Win Mag choice, we can be real good friends! A buddy of mine lives in Colorado Springs and he got me into my .338 a long time ago. One of the best decisions I've made.

My buddy and I are both transplants to the area as well and looking to get set up on some big game adventures too.

Savage Arms 338 Win Mag is on its way. It's kind of inexpensive due to the plastic stock, so I got a Boyds thumbhole with Pachmayr recoil pad on the way also. In addition I had to order parts from Savage to rebuild the frame and existing magazine, as well as parts to make a second magazine, and for kicks upgrading the plastic trigger guard to steel. These parts were nearly 2/3 the price of the rifle itself. When it comes together it'll be really awesome!
