View Full Version : Anybody reload for subguns? Plated bullets through suppressed uzi/m11
One of the reasons I'm finally picking up an xl650 is because of the volume of ammo I go through with my full auto toys. I have an uzi today, and a m11/9 and 1928 thompson coming shortly.
Ideally I'm planning to load up heavy hot 147gr 9mm FMJ loads for the uzi, which will be shot suppressed, and probably something similar for the m11, which will also be suppressed. I may run some 124s just for "everyday" use because of the cost difference.
My problem is most reasonably priced heavy 9mm bullets are plated, and there are definitely mixed reviews about whether or not shooting plated bullets through a suppressor is a huge bad idea or just fine.
Anybody have any experience with suppressed plated bullets, good or bad? Or, anybody have a good line on cheap 147gr FMJ - haha?
I have used lots of Extreme 147s. Not that accurate, but they work.

Keep your FPS down. You should load plated in between hard cast and jacketed,or so says the ones i have purchased.
Here's Berry's "Caution"
Plated bullets occupy a position between cast bullets and jacketed bullets. They are soft lead, but have a hard outer shell on them. When loading plated bullets we have found best results using low- to mid-range jacketed data in the load manual. You must use data for a bullet that has the same weight and profile as the one you are loading. Do not exceed mid-range loads. Do not use magnum loads.

Hm that doesn't sound good. Uzis like it hot.

What were you shooting them through? Extreme suggests they have a slightly thicker plating. Maybe that's enough.

Enough to put through your non-replaceable Uzi? It's reloading, err on the side of caution. Last thing i want to read is ANOTHER over pressure story. I just put approx 100+ rds of mixed ammo i have no clue what the specs were, in my pull bin.
Yeah honestly that's why I was asking. Frankly, I'll be some time before I have the confidence to put anything other than factory through my expensive toys. But it's not easy to find factory subsonic 9mm, let alone at a reasonable price.
Good thing pistol reloading powder is so easy to find though. ;)
Guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

5.5 inch M-16 and AAC can.
Keep the velocity under 1200-1300 fps and you should be fine.
If you want the piece of mind the Hornady 147gr FMJ in the 2500ct bulk packs might fit the bill. http://www.hornady.com/store/9mm-.355-147-GR-FMJ-RN-Bulk-2500-ct-box

Watch the velocity on plated bullets. If you were to separate the plating from the lead, might not be a good experience. I would go ahead and go with FMJ bullets for a few cents more per round........reduce the risk of having to replace a barrel. Though Uzi parts are not that hard to come by.
I am a Class 3 guy, and I generally stick with factory ammo in my guns, ........FWIW
Velocity isnt what makes the plating come off. It is too much crimp.
First thing to go with too much crimp is accuracy. Then they start to do other stuff, none of it good.
If you just load them to normal levels and not +P+ you will be fine.

Sort of off topic but what 115gr off the shelf (win, fed, tula) 9mm range ammo seems to work best with your sub gun? I just built a 9mm ar pistol with a 7" barrel.

Any ammo will work, you're running semi, not select / full auto. All you have is a longer hand gun. I run any and everything [except soft lead]through my 10" sbr 9.

Meh. Even if you load it hot, you'll just maybe munge up your can, and that can be rebuilt or replaced. The Uzi itself will be fine and Uzi barrels are cheap and plentiful.

Great point
I loaded some 110 gn fmg very light as a test for my semi auto 16" vector uzi. and for girls to shoot. My plan was to see how cheap I could go before went looking for a threaded barrel. They come out at 700 fps and even less in a glock 17 pistol. I was surprised that I had no issues. Isn't everything in an M11 subsonic? Never chrono'd but I'd think even +p whould be just based on design. I've only loaded a few thousand plated bullets and had good luck with 9mm, so so with the 45 ACP. The ACP problem was a bullet profile that didn't work in my 1911 but was fin in everything else.
