View Full Version : How long before "smart firearms" are required here
http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2014/02/20/first-smart-pistol-shelves-in-california/?intcmp=features
Sucks that companies are pursuing this technology. If all the gun manufacturers refused to develop this junk, it would be less likely the libs would be able to mandate them. Now that a company has a working model for sale, how much longer until Cali, NY or CO will require it?

I think that first, if this technology is to be accepted, it should be REQUIRED to be first be acquired by law enforcement to prove the reliability and viability of the concept. If the cops don't want it than it should not be required of the rest of the citizenship.

I've not only managed, but have indeed thrived without a 'smart' phone. Be assured, I'll be just fine without a 'smart' gun.

I trust my life and the lives of my loved ones to my firearms. Not going to risk that on a notoriously unreliable, electronic doo-hickey just to make some statist halfwits feel better. Will not comply.
Just one minute while I recall my PIN and punch it into my watch. Oh yeah, I'm with this.......
Who the hell still wears a watch?
I don't think these ridiculous things or any other form of gun control should be shoved down our throats. The tyrant anti-gun crowd will do anything to Nerf our sport, way of life, and means of protection.

More bullshit from liberals. My guess is it won't sell and therefore won't be in production long.
I agree with wcitriumph, let's see how Leos like it. My guess is not much. One more thing that could break.

"...can only function with an accompanying wristwatch, which is sold separately."
"The pistol sells for $1,399 and the watch retails for another $399"
So $1800 for a .22 pistol. Should be a huge hit. [Coffee]
Pretty glad that I have what I need on hand, I will not ever buy anything with this kind of bullshit on it....

Can't see how the gun would operate without a battery or super cap.
Both have the potential to discharge when left unused for a while.
Keeping it on a charger 24x7 limits to ability to keep it in a secure container, like many safes, and opens up the chanced of theft.
Finding the "wristband" when you need it seems like a recipe to store the wristband with the firearms; similar to how people write their computer passwords on a post-it and stick it on their computer monitors, in an unsecured fashion.
I would really hate to have a need to use this, only to have it "Blue Screen" like my PC or phone or to have the battery be dead.
I would see the technology more practical if it could be used to quickly open a locked container, where my firearm is stored, such as a safe; the safe, also having a non-electronic method of access as well.
It's perfect really. I mean the libs pass these laws making these types of guns mandatory. Colt, Smith, Ruger, Glock etc. quit selling in these states because they don't want to mess with the BS laws and the only guns left that are legal for new purchases are this smart tech stuff and there you have it. They're too expensive and to unreliable so nobody buys legal firearms anymore. Add to that that old guns will be legislated to be modified to 'smart' technology and because they can't then all of us become felons if we don't turn them all in/swap them out. Laugh now but look at the environment our kids will be left with.
Kind of seems like the long range thinking-long term agenda to me, I'd expect to see these laws pass in alot of blue states now that the technology is hitting the shelves and is 'viable'.

Ooooh... I wonder if "they" will be able to disarm the gun remotely like they want to be able to do with cars?

As I mentioned elsewhere, if I had a ton of money, I would buy one. Then I would take more money, and give the gun/watch to some nerds to build a jammer. i suspect it's simple short range bluetooth that you have to pair to each other. Just to prove how simple it would be to defeat it.
KISS baby!
ETA: Robb kinda beat me to the punch with that one!
Who the hell still wears a watch?
I do. I dont like having to pull out my phone whenever I want the time. Plus, it beeps on the hour so it's an easy way to keep track of time without always having to look. Plus it has some other fun gizmos built in like a compass and a thermometer.
I would see the technology more practical if it could be used to quickly open a locked container, where my firearm is stored, such as a safe; the safe, also having a non-electronic method of access as well.

Who the hell still wears a watch?
I've worn one every day since I was 10 or 11...didn't know they were that outdated.
I will make the same offer here that I made to some others.
Buy me the watch and the gun. I, and some esteemed friends of mine, will evaluate the security protocols it uses. We will prove that it is hackable, show that it is unsafe, show that we can remotely enable/disable it at will without the watch, and show that it can be fired without the watch (e.g. we will show that an attacker can disable your gun without your permission, even if you are authorized). We will then present the findings at a major security conference with whole bunches of press around.
This is a real and legit offer. Just looking for someone to fund the project. We have all the high-tech toys to do all the testing, and the engineers are willing to do this pro-bono, just need the gun and watch.
The company is betting that demand for the technology will increase as consumers seek guns modified for safety.
That company is betting wrong... Especially with people who don't know how guns like Glock and Sig Sauer work, I constantly have to use this line:

...and the leftists will ignore all of it. They don't let facts or logic get in the way of their agenda.

Would love to see if any of these A-holes hold any stock in the company that's developed this shit.

It will not pass this year but when the dems take majority again i think we are in trouble if this gun control nonsense does not die down again.

I honestly don't think it will pass at all, just based on the fact that they couldn't put together a AWB again after Sandy Hook. If they ever had a chance to make a big step in that direction it was then.
I've been wrong before though.

If you replace " personalized gun" with "Modern Sporting Rifle" or even "Hand Gun" I'd swear that the NRA or similar put out that paper LOL

Not today or tomorrow, but you can bet your azz, it is a step on the socialist path.
Think of it as a tourist ad aimed at lefty's on the progressive trip through socialism headed to the communist utopia.

I'll go for the smart gun when I can buy a phase plasma rifle in the 40 watt range. I certainly would not want a criminal to get hold of one of those.
the world will end before it becomes reality.
the world will end before it becomes reality.
That won't stop them from passing a law or creating a regulation requiring them. And it wouldn't be the first time that a law or regulation required something that the technology wasn't available to comply.
