View Full Version : CO (among other states) move to change tobacco age to 21

I'll just say, something like 18 means 18 didn't stop me from picking up the habit at 16... 12 years later I'm still at it (trying to quit, though), just as not being 21 didn't stop me from drinking. I'm not sure if this is the best choice or not, but I'll leave this here for discussion...

Colorado lawmakers look to outlaw tobacco use for those under 21
A bill that would raise the age for buying cigarettes and other tobacco products from 18 to 21 is intended to try to keep young kids from picking up the habit.
The bipartisan measure, from two Democrats in the House and two in the Senate, could be introduced as early as Tuesday.
Jodi L. Radke of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids said most 18-year-olds are seniors in high school.
"They are able to go off campus during the lunch hour and buy tobacco products and oftentimes they are coming back to use them across the street or near campus and sharing them with their peers," she said. "The push behind this is to delay the initiation with kids; 95 percent of tobacco users begin using tobacco before the age of 21."
The bill will cover tobacco products, including cigarettes, electronic cigarettes and chewing tobacco. It does not increase penalties, only the age.
An underage person who buys a tobacco product commits a Class 2 petty offense and faces a $100 fine or community service. It also is a petty offense to sell to a minor, with fines varying depending on the number of offenses.
In addition to Colorado, legislatures in Utah and Maryland will take up the issue this year, Radke said. Already, New York City and Hawaii County in Hawaii have raised the age from 18 to 21.
The sponsors of the Colorado measure are Sens. Steve King, R-Grand Junction, and John Kefalas, D-Fort Collins, and Reps. Beth McCann, D-Denver, and Cheri Gerou, R-Evergreen.
"Drinking is 21. Marijuana is 21. Gambling is 21. We're just making tobacco 21 also," King said. "It's a consistency across those laws."
He added that studies show people who haven't started smoking by age 18 generally don't start.
(ED- Not sure how accurate that is...)

My 12 year old has a classmate that smokes... this is waste of legislative effort as usual.

So how do they mentally justify allowing people who cannot smoke or drink the ability to vote.

Because those people are more likely to vote for Democrats ... that is the only justification for allowing ANYONE to vote.

If an 18 year old is old enough to die for his country, he is old enough to have a smoke and a beer.

God these people sicken me

Not it just this but if you are capable of voting for officials but those offials limit your ability to do what you want to with your body they are expressing ownership of you. Also by making these arbitrary age limits we are making classes of citizens. Are you a better or more moral person just because you are 21 rather then 18.

i would ask you to remember who is the real enemy.

Yeah, right, that will work, sure it will.

I started at 15 and smoked on and off into my 40's. I remember driving to work and I had to pass a Jr. High school and a elementary school. The Jr. High kids could be seen smoking on the way to school and at one point in my drive there was an alley where a 5th grader was selling cig's to class mates for a dollar a stick. That is $20 a pack when a pack cost $0.75 in a vending machine.

So, yeah, lets raise the minimum smoking age to 21 and I am sure that it will save many children from dying of cancer in the next 40 to 50 years.

If they don't trust you to make decisions on whether to smoke and drink, how can they trust you to follow orders and shoot people? These ages should all be the same. 18 or 21. Pick an age that defines an adult and stick with it.

That's how the ability to vote at 18 came about, among other things.

gun and magazine restrictions stop crime, Check

21 to buy or consume alcohol stops drunk driving, Check

21 to buy cigarettes prevents addiction, Check

The RMN & Denver post stopped taking ads for firearms, a legal item, because it sent a message about violence. YET the post now has a section dedicated to mj called The Cannibist.

If anyone can figure how a liberals mind works, let us know . Cause i sure the fuk have no idea.

These laws are so stupid I am hoping they pass a ton of them like this. If nothing else it will piss more people off and get them to vote all the dems out. I hate smoking, literally it pisses me off but I have no place to tell someone they can't do dumb shit to their own body. As long as it doesn't affect me, what right do I have to tell someone how to do something?

I heard something else today about another law they are trying to pass that limits the size of yards in new construction. This is the same thing as taking the mag ban from 15 to 7 to 5 to 3 and 1.

One question that hasn't been asked: would this law apply to them smoking dope as well?
I mean smoking is smoking right? It's bad for you.

OK, thanks- didn't know and really don't care. It would just be an interesting point if the dopers could buy it at 18 and they want to push this bill.
New York city just passed a 21 and over tobacco bill not too long ago IIRC.

ignore it.

but of course most wont, then when someone gets nailed for smoking at 20y 11 m, there will be a celebration of the bureaucrat who fined him, or the cop that arrested him and the DA that prosecuted him because.. um they are just doing their job. kid broke the law, plus he was acting like a douche - law is the law.
PS for those that think this type of garbage is just a democrat feature.. well here is a pony [mlp] [mlp] [mlp]

You know what this kind of crap takes hold. ? Well one of the reasons that when a donkey flag waver holds the mighty wooden magic hammer, they pass this shit. all the donkey people go woo hoo ! its about time ! Be a good law abiding citizen. Dont like it go live in somailia. Stop being a douche you damn bible thumping tea bagger

then one day its the elephant flag wavers turn to hold the magic wooden hammer and inscribe the holy book of the State.

So you know what the first thing they do is? Add more meaningless crap in there to steal peoples property, to restrict peoples liberty and if necessary, if they don't comply to kill them. Again, much celebration is had by the elephant flag team. woo hoo ! its about time ! Be a good law abiding citizen. Dont like it go live in somailia. Stop being a douche you damn . hippie pot head

Then a few years passes and its the donkeys turn again.

Then one day, there are so many laws and so many regulations that no one knows what is in there. So there becomes a class of people who the words in the Holy book do not apply to. Then there are other classes whom the most ridiculous contradictory things written in the holy book is applied to some bloke and the full weight of all the donkey and elephant flag wavers is applied til they are squashed like a grape. If they should object, well then they can just STFU and die on the side of the road.

Oh course and here is the kicker.. If that poor bloke had a 16 round magazine, well one side would likely cheer. If on the other hand, say the poor bloke had oh a joint, pre-1/1 the other side would likely cheer.

Thank GOD we don't have anything like i described in this post. Its all fantasy !

Until people stop using the State aka wanting to have other people point guns in their neighbors face because... um i pressed that button, pulled that lever last Tuesday, it will continue that way. Most people think the point of the government is to FUCK with their neighbor because FUCK THAT GUY HE IS A DOUCHE

Hey, welcome to adulthood with training wheels! You can make decisions that can affect you for your entire life....except for these...

...and the CDC considers you a child if you get injured by a firearm if you're 19 and you're considered a child under your parents health insurance until you turn 26.

With Bert on this one, 18 you can die for this country, but can't drink or smoke. Good lord, the toilet bowl just continues to spiral down.

Oh I forgot its for the kids... Blah, blah, blah who cares?

Ages need to be consistent. If you're legal to vote and die for the country, you should be legal to drink or smoke. You're either an adult or you're not.
