I didn't see any kind of recent thread on this and could use some help. Wife and I are planning to get all new appliances in the kitchen. I've never bought appliances brand new and could use any tips/insight. Couple questions that first come to mind:

Does anyone here work at an appliance store?
When's the best time to buy? We can wait a couple months if Memorial day is worth waiting for.
Any brands to avoid?
I'm going to compare the usual suspects (Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy) but what about Mountain High appliances? Has anyone gone through them? Ive heard Factory Appliance Outlet can be a major headache and I'd rather avoid that.

Thanks in advance.

I usualy buy from SEARS APPLIANCE OUTLET. They have dings/marks, but at upto 50% off (or 70% off if you believe their ad) on good brands. These are quality rejects, returns, or shipping damage goods. We have some rental properties, and got tired of craigslist's junks. Sears have warranties.

Dont go through their online outlet, go to their physical outlet location. AND if you go a month or so after a holiday/nationwide sale, you'll have many more choices.

No issues on the mechanicals.

Good Luck!

Lowes and Home Depot will be easier to deal with if you have any problems during the warranty period. I have had really good luck with Samsung appliances lately. I got a really good deal on a washer and dryer after Thanksgiving from Factory Appliance Outlet.

Appliances arn't what they used to be in our parents day. I never USED to buy extended warantees, but now I do. With appliances I believe you have to as they're built to fail easily inside a decade. If and when they fail, I've had horrible luck at repairing them, I've done so to save money but in the end I would have been far better off and big money ahead just buying a new appliance.

In our 7 year old house I've gone through 2 microwaves and 2 dishwashers. Our Maytag dishwasher shit the bed after 1 year and a couple months. Went through $100.00 in fuses, then had the motor and pump replaced and it worked for a month and now it looks like the circuit control board needs replaced - at almost the cost of a new machine. I absolutely wouldn't buy another Maytag if my life depended on it. Just my experience. Don't know if I'm jinxed or not, our FridgidAir fridge is still going strong though. It's probably all a crap shoot, but the ex. warrantees are definitely something to be considered.

Buy commercial when it comes to Fridge, buy and use gas stove only, non steam diswasher.. and oh mini oven instead of microwave. These are some of the harder lessons I learned. We haven't had a microwave in the last 4 years.

We put in an ASKO dishwasher a few years back and the thing truly is silent. The next door neighbor just bought an ASKO as well and seems quite happy with theirs too.

I have always gone to Sears. That won't happen for much longer. The do have a scratch/dent/overstock warehouse, off of 6th, in Denver.

Sears outlet is awesome.

The brand you should look to buy is Samsung. They by far lead the market. My Father in Law owns an appliance company that rents out appliances to apartment complexes and he only carries whirlpool, but he has Samsungs at home.

I also have samsung and love it.

Im a ge repair tech among other certs but ive worked on all brands.

Personally I avoid maytag. More marketing than anything.
Emerson is trash
kenmore has one off parts so you have to go to the factory to be raped.
whirlpool are fine but parts are about 10percent higher.

Most of them are made at the same factory anyways.

I have a GE profile refrigerator that's 7 years old and I don't think it has an original mechanical part left in it (and is on its third ice maker)

Whirley-pop. Much better than micro and might take another min if ya know what your doing. [LOL]

My stove is a circa 86-87 Jenn-Air before they were bought out. I love my stove and will fix it until the day I die. Bought it for $75 in 2001 when I did my remodel. [Flower] But then I have not had to replace anything yet even though I have a bunch of spare parts just in case. (bought another stove for $100 and stripped it.)

If you have the cash to drop, the Bosch dishwashers are amazing. They are not cheap, but I think I'm going to write this new dishwasher we bought into my will. We paid a premium for it, but it really is silent and we throw nasty, crusty, caked on pots and pans in there, and that thing spits 'em out pretty every single time. Haven't had it long enough to tell you whether it will last 20 years or not, but I never thought I'd be so excited about something like a dishwasher.

I have a Samsung fridge and it's great.

I will never buy another Kenmore (Sears) appliance. Our Kenmore range/oven switched on the broiler by itself one day and just got hotter and hotter. It would not shut off and I had to run outside and flip the breaker to kill it. Found a ton of reports of this same thing happening to other people. Glad we were home when it happened.

I replaced the range/oven and dishwasher with Frigidaire Gallery Series. They work OK, but I'm less than impressed. The convection oven takes an inordinate amount of time to preheat, and does not cook evenly (kinda defeats the purpose of having the convection oven function). The dishwasher takes about 3 hours to run a cycle and it's pretty loud, but it'll clean anything we put in it.

We've had GE, Whirlpool and Maytag. The GE and Whirpool ice makers all shit the bed as soon as the warranty ran out. We just bought a new home and ordered an LG refer, washer and dryer. The refer had to be counter depth and special ordered. Ordered from Home Depot and got 10% off of their regular discounted price. free delivery and installation.
