We're going on a 7 mile back-packing trip in June. We'll be toting pistols in to bear, and other critter, country. My local shop had an AR7 for sale...I say had...the nerve of them, they sold it. I didn't make the connection when I first saw it, but I after I thought about for awhile, I decided that it would be a perfect gun to add to my collection, for trips just like this.

Anyways, other than an AR7, and a 10-22, and a Marlin 70pss, what other breakdown 22LR rifles are out there?

Anybody have any experience w/any of those?

I'd buy an AR in 22lr, install a side folder, before i'd buy an AR-7. The papoose is one of the few i wish i'd never sold.

If I found a reasonably priced Papoose, I'd buy it, but for a backpack gun I have a Kel Tec Sub2000 that uses the same magazines as my Glock 22. Carry one pistol, several 15 round magazines and put the folded carbine in the pack.

The Papoose would be my choice. The AR7 is okay, but feels cheap.

I've got a Ruger 10/22 Takedown and I LOVE it.....especially suppressed!

kids cricket 22 can be made into a takedown with just a couple $ of parts from ace hardware. If I could find the pictures, I'd post them up. grrr

+1

I have both the 10/22 TD and the AR7. The AR7 is neat from a uniqueness perspective but I think it wears off after your 13th birthday. The AR7 is one of the few in the safe I've considered selling within the past year or two but I figured I'd hold onto it because I know my kids will love it when they're of age. As an adult, I wouldn't buy one today with the 10/22 TD being an option.

The Papoose seems to be decent based on it's following. I always wanted one as a kid but have never fired one.

Browning made one as we'll not sure if they still do. It was nice, but pricey. They make a take down lever but it's 223 to something like 450 marlin depending on what you want. No where close to cheap though

Technically, the Marlin 39 lever is a takedown. However, I don't think it's made to be broken down frequently; the action is exposed and the bolt is loose.

My brother has one of the little Browning take down autos. It's pretty sweet, I'd love to have one too. He got it sometime in the 60's, so no doubt it's a real Browning and not the Japanese copy. I'm sure it would fit in a backpack very nicely.

There are a few versions of the little takedown browning, two by other makers. A buddy just picked up a Remington M24. They are very cool. If you look for the off brands, they can be had for around $400 to $500 in good shape.

I'm sure you meant Remington Model 24:

That seemed like a great article until I got to

In most of the U.S, the largest animal you may have to worry about is a raccoon, bobcat, or cougar, all of which can be dropped with a .22LR.

Mmmm .... yeah, a cougar could be dropped with a .22 LR with superb shot placement and a lot of luck but I wouldn't plan on it ...

Not a true breakdown rifle I guess but am thinking about one of these Lil Badger folders.
