Remember that in African nations in the recent past whole villages were ethnically cleansed (wiped out) by groups with nothing more than machetes and clubs.

April 2010 16 students and a teacher wounded by dirtbag with knife.
April 2010 28 students and two teachers wounded and a security guard. children were mostly age 4.
April 2010 dickhead goes after preschool children with hammer and injures them. then sets his own ass on fire.
May 2010

I cant keep typing it, check the link. There are evil people everywhere. guns or no guns, knives or no knives, evil exists and will always exist.
March 2010 Main article: Nanping school massacre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanping_school_massacre)
On March 23, 2010, Zheng Minsheng (郑民生)[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%932012%29#ci te_note-sohu_fujianxiongshaan-7) 41, murdered eight children with a knife (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanping_school_stabbings) in an elementary school in Nanping (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanping),[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%932012%29#ci te_note-BODEEN_AP-8) Fujian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fujian) province;[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%932012%29#ci te_note-FlorCruz_china.attacks-9) The attack was widely reported in Chinese media (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_of_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China) (called 南平实验小学重大凶杀案),[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%932012%29#ci te_note-sohu_fujianxiongshaan-7) sparking fears of copycat crimes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copycat_crimes).[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%932012%29#ci te_note-FlorCruz_china.attacks-9) Following a quick trial, Zheng Minsheng was executed about one month later on April 28.[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%932012%29#ci te_note-BODEEN_AP-8) Media reported a history of mental health issues, but police stated that Zheng had no history of mental illness, contradicting earlier reports. Zheng said that he performed the attack after being turned down by a girl and suffering "unfair treatment" from the girl's wealthy family.
April 2010 Just a few hours after the execution of Zheng Minsheng in neighboring Fujian Province,[10] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%932012%29#ci te_note-SKY_CANAVES-10) in Leizhou (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leizhou),[11] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%932012%29#ci te_note-beyond_tragic-11) Guangdong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guangdong) another knife-wielding man named Chen Kangbing, 33 (陈康炳)[12] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%932012%29#ci te_note-psychiatric_check-12) at Hongfu Primary School wounded 16 students and a teacher.[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%932012%29#ci te_note-FlorCruz_china.attacks-9) Chen Kangbing had been a teacher at a different primary school in Leizhou, but was on sick leave due to mental illness[12] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%932012%29#ci te_note-psychiatric_check-12)[13] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%932012%29#ci te_note-13) He was sentenced to death (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_punishment) by a court in Zhanjiang (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhanjiang) in June.[14] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%932012%29#ci te_note-sentenced_to_death-14)
On April 29 in Taixing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taixing),[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%932012%29#ci te_note-BODEEN_AP-8) Jiangsu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jiangsu), unemployed 47-year-old Xu Yuyuan went to Zhongxin Kindergarten[15] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%932012%29#ci te_note-28_kindergarten-15) and stabbed 28 students and two teachers after stabbing the security guard;[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%932012%29#ci te_note-FlorCruz_china.attacks-9) most of the Taixing students were 4 years old.[16] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%932012%29#ci te_note-Al_Jazeera_April_29-16) The attack was the second in China in just two days.
On April 30, Wang Yonglai used a hammer to cause head injury to preschool children in Weifang (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weifang),[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%932012%29#ci te_note-BODEEN_AP-8) Shandong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shandong), then used gasoline to commit suicide by self-immolation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-immolation).[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%932012%29#ci te_note-FlorCruz_china.attacks-9)

All on Clinton's watch because they "didn't want another Somalia." Something to the effect of 800% more efficient killing in a short period of time than Hitler during the holocaust. That too could have been stopped, by men with guns from Belgium and Canada who were there when it all went down!

I guess I just don't see the U.S. as being on the hook to solve or prevent every atrocity in the world. I personally don't consider either Somalia or Rwanda as being worth a single American life. Best that we deal with our problems and let them deal with theirs.

Meh, not sure about Somalia, but you can't pretend that Rwanda wasn't genocide. And considering a little known fact- Clinton inaugurated the National Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., just 8 short months prior to Rwanda and in his speech he claimed "Never again." That's the thing that irks me... not so much that we should get involved all the time, but if you're going to make a claim like that, then in less than a year not follow through, that's pretty low. I think we have a moral obligation to prevent genocide if possible, such as the stationing of UN troops in the country in question, who were ordered to not get involved. What a great message that sends...
Sorry for the derail.

Actually, in roughly 100 days it was closer to 800,000 people killed. Pres Clinton and the UN were unwilling to intervene. The PBS documentary "Ghosts of Rwanda" was very informative. Whether or not the US should have intervened I'll go with "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."

and people think that once all the guns are gone all will be good in America. [facepalm]

Things much worse than that had happened in China. In 2001, one man murder 108 people in just one night:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shijiazhuang_bombings
http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/world/2001-04-29-bombing.htm

Which is my favorite story to share with my American friends who believe in gun control. I still believe that if he had guns, he would have killed many less, because among the 108 killed he really wanted to murder about 20 of them. I believe the lack of firearm made him more desperate. But that's just my speculation.

However I don't agree with the title "A couple of people with guns could of stopped this". If there's a chance that a couple of civilians in the train station would carry guns then the attackers, who apparently had planned very carefully, wouldn't choose to use knives in the first place.

They obviously need stricter knife control like the british have.

I don't know about UK, but during the 2008 Olympic games, valid ID is required to buy kitchen knife in Beijing.

I think it's a better illustration of the illusion that killings are the fault of "guns". Getting rid of a tool, does not rid the evil that is a part of humankind.

I guess it makes people feel better that they think they are 'doing something' for their safety. It doesn't force them to come to the reality that their expectation of safety in the world that we live in is a false hope and defies natural law.

Gman did you notice his profile???

newb from boulder HMMM. I hate to be the one to harp on stereotypes, but this statement sure seems to fall in line with what we have come to expect from a boulderite. Disclaimer: I may be way off base.......

There are plenty of instances where the shooter, when confronted with security or private individuals who were properly armed with guns, gave themselves up or killed themsleves rather than continue their rampage.

The arapahoe high schooler and the mall shooter in Portland were the latest that come to mind.

this recent thread is of a 7 News story that ran recently about private individuals who defended themselves with their guns.
https://www.ar-15.co/threads/126747-7-News-Reports-on-Firearms-Used-in-Self-Defense

These people were completely unarmed. Does that not also seems to be the SOP of these types of attacks. Whether the perp has a gun or ten ninjas with blades they never attack people who would be able to defend themselves.
The ststement that a few poeple on this train with concealed carry permits or hell even a law abiding citizen with a knife of his own may very well have made a difference.

I am not looking to start a fight, but you are way off base.

I merely pointed out that the assumption that the attackers would keep using knives when civilians could be armed was wrong. The place I happen to live at had nothing to do with the validity of my reasoning. And, as to what Gman said, I actually totally agree with it.

There are plenty of instances where the shooter, when confronted with security or private individuals who were properly armed with guns, gave themselves up or killed themsleves rather than continue their rampage.

In this instance, 4 of the attackers were shot dead by an armed police officer. They kept charging at the officer after he had fired two warning shots, with only knives in their hands. So they didn't look like the kind who would give up or kill themselves.

Meh, not sure about Somalia, but you can't pretend that Rwanda wasn't genocide.

I'm not pretending squat. What I'm saying is that I don't think genocide in a far off land by group A vs group B is worth billions of U.S. dollars and countless lives of American citizens to stop it. Should we sacrifice some of ours to save a bunch of theirs? That's not a bargain you'll ever sell me on.

The world isn't a fair place. Was not, is not, won't be. Sure there have been genocides, and there will continue to be genocides well into the future, humans are animals and will remain so.

If you really want to go help oppressed people in foreign lands, there are a great many flights leaving DIA every single day that will take you there. My mother-in-law returned from Kigali last week and apparently they still need a fair bit of help in Rwanda, I'd suggest you get right on that.
