View Full Version : dpms lr308 vs m1a
I needs some opinions. I miss the polytech I had. never shot well but was a lot of fun to shoot. The dpms lr308 I have shoots very well. Would I be moving backwards if I went with a springfield m1a? I know you can get them to shoot but don't want to spend tons just to be back were I'm at now. What are real world grouping for a standard m1a?

Put a national match front sight on it and it will easily be a 1-1.5 moa shooter for you with the right loads.
You could start with a Fulton or LRB and never again question the M14 platform...
Real world for a standard M1A would be around 1.5 to 2 MOA. I have a SuperMatch that will shoot sub MOA.

The AR platform will always have an accuracy edge over the M1A due to less mechanical movement, especially out on the barrel. The M1A gas cylinder is mounted on the barrel as is the operating rod guide. And when those hunks of iron move, it is violent movement.
To get the best from the M1A some extensive accurizing work needs to be done.

A loaded M1A with a properly shimmed unitized gas system is pretty slick without bedding or a second lug. Is it a Supermatch? No, but beyond that it becomes diminishing returns IMHO. Just my opinions, but if you need groups to be half inch or less, you're better off with a bolt gun anyway. The M14 / M1A is a battle rifle.
I really need to stick with the dpms. I'll be around .6"-.7" moa on a good day. which is pretty close to my Remington 700 I had

If it's about target shooting, and you're getting those results, a standard or loaded M1A isn't going to be a step forward for you. I'm an unabashed fan of the M14... but in its standard configuration, it's just not a target rifle. I have other rifles for playing the teeny group game.
Still, like I said, with a few upgrades and some handloads...

Little load development... Best group vs. speeds that duplicate M80 Ball with H4895. 100 yards, iron sights. That's just LC 05 brass and some whatever surplus 147 gr fmj bullet. The extreme spread for the group on the left was 10.
Now I'm not going to name names (but it starts with a B, ends with an S and has obbyfairbank in the middle), but the last guy that bet against me and my M1A had to buy beers after we left the range.

Haha sounds like my brother and I when I had a remi 700 aac-sd and his vtr. I think I'm just gonna save up and get a socom and use it as a battle rifle. I just love shooting them.
