View Full Version : just made and put up my NO SOLICITING sign
I'm about tired of the people coming by wanting to sell crap, get you to buy their books for their "college fundraiser"...(go get a fucking job), religious groups, etc etc.
The only people I want to see are young kids doing their fundraisers because they can't get jobs and money can be tight with the parents, and the boy scouts and girl scouts.
man I can't wait to have property and put a fence around the place with a gated entrance....

Yep. I have a glass storm door and it says no soliciting on it right at eye level when they start up the steps. When a solicitor comes to the door they are greeted by a pissed off 155 pound blood hound baying and jumping up and down. I just ask them what they want while he's raising hell from behind the glass . Usually they try to get all pissy because he's so loud and intimidating, some even ask if I will put him away so we can have a conversation. At that point I motion towards the sign and just walk away. Bloodhound still going ape shit crazy.

Mrs. Sharpienads made one that says "No Soliciting... unless you're a Girl Scout"
Only had one douchebag knock on my door since we put it up about 6 months ago.

When I lived in town I had one right at eye level on the front door.
Didn't stop shit...
They said they were taking donations, taking a survey, getting signatures for a petition, free roof inspection, saving my soul, etc.
Most probably didn't even know what the word "soliciting" meant.
Now you are going to be twice as pissed...
1. You got people knocking on your door.
2. You got people ignoring your sign.
The guys I really wanted to give an ass beating to were the ones that knock, and then step off to the side so you can't see them through the peep hole. They do that so you will step out to see who it was, and then they are right there. I about killed one of those guys... Mostly cuz I saw him do it through another window, and was ready for him.

The problem with "No Soliciting" signs is that the kind of person who's made enough bad decisions in their life that they decide that Door-To-Door sales is their best option to make a living are not likely to know what the hell the word "Soliciting" means.
Maybe a better option:

Guess my next one will be a huge "go away". Maybe disable the doorbell.
Make sure to disable the doorbell, not remove it. If it is gone they'll knock.
Of course even that isnt foolproof. Got one a while back that showed up about 30 minutes after I'd ordered some chinese.
Do what my maternal grandfather did and wire a car battery to the metal press plate on the doorbell. He lived in Florida and had some "minority" (word he used isn't PC) teens who regularly rang door bells of seniors and ran off. So he hooked up a deep cycle marine battery from his garage to the front door, once the plate was pressed it completed the circuit. Knocked one kid on his ass one morning as he was cooking breakfast. He also hotwired his hubcaps back in the 80's because he got tired of them getting stolen. He was also an electrician and teletype machine repairman as a Navy CB back in his youth.

Get a video survillance system, put a latch over the doorbell. When they pick the latch up, it trips a flash bulb behind them. Then when they press the doorbell button a recording says "welcome, you are now on camera, now go away unless your a girl scout with 8 cases of thin mints"...Instead of buying gun shit i should build something like that and sell it. Camera could be fake, but it sounds kewl...
I have been considering the camera thing as well. Would be nice extra security

That'd get you criminal status and probation here in Colorado. We have to protect the children ya know?

I'm very surprised that some on this forum believe that posting a "No Soliciting" sign should auto-magically yield the desired results.
While it SHOULD...it DOES NOT.
It requires those solicitors that encounter such a sign to:
1) Read and understand the sign
2) Respect the owner and honor his/her rights/intentions
3) Act in a lawful manner
I believe that in an analogous fashion,
many forum members have supported the issue which argues
"Enacting more gun laws will do nothing to stop criminals from obtaining and using guns...they will only be effective against law abiding citizens."
If having a LAW to try and stop people from engaging in an undesirable action is not effective,
is it even possible that posting a SIGN to prevent an action will be any MORE effective?
It will only be effective for the "honest" guys, that read the sign and respect the owner.
The other "slimy" guys will continue to ignore it.
...same with gun laws.
What CAN be effective is sign citing and enacting consequences:
EX: "No Parking or your car will be towed"...then have the car towed.
What might be a good legal "consequence" for these solicitors ?
Any ideas ?
"solicitors will be cited for trespassing"
Wouldn't work for apartments but would for a house

Anyone approaching my porch should notice this sign:
http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz339/fentonite/05674B0B-7102-4B50-9BEB-95C76D6FAF37-21452-00000467CA24306A_zps53bff207.jpg
If that didn't dissuade you, and you still want to get on my porch, you have to come through a latched metal gate. You basically have to put your hand on this notice to open the gate:
http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz339/fentonite/B1EB0780-6414-4447-8F15-F02989701ABB-21452-0000046718603C86_zpsaf17e091.jpg
If you ignore the notice and unlatch the gate, and you aren't concerned about the eruption of dog-barking from within, this is posted on the screen door:
http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz339/fentonite/BEAB3132-764B-4792-9075-700076F32AEC-21452-000004671DFFD697_zpse7e70529.jpg
I don't know how to be more clear.
I had a no soliciting sign that said "Unless you're a girl scout selling girl scout cookies, this will be the next thing you see. <insert pic of revolver>. If you're selling, I'm not buying". Never worked. I'd usually open the door to see the person finally reading the sign and gulping.

I have a no soliciting sign right above the doorbell. Doesn't stop them. The entrance to my neighborhood also says no soliciting. I listen to what they're selling then I give them the business about not being able to read and comprehend English. I carry at home, so when they see my pistol, there're very sorry them leave...quickly
"solicitors will be cited for trespassing"
How about "Solicitors will be violated for trespassing."?

The only thing the No Soliciting signs we put up have accomplished is. To get the idiot at the door say, Oh yeah i read it, i'm not a solicitor, i'm a salesman.
AND YOU'RE TRESPASSING
Has anyone ever seen one that tells everyone else except kids fundraisers for their club or team to get the heck off my property?
I hate the salesmen/scammers, but I don;t mind the neighborhood kids at all.
I've had a sign up for 6 years now, and your right just a slight reduction in violators. Alarm companies are the most common offenders, I think they believe that my alarm company sign in the yard is an invitation for competition to ring the bell. I actually kind of enjoy answering the door to find a sales person at the door. I usually wait for them to go through the pitch and respond I don't want to change to a company with employees that can't read. Yesterday two girls came to the door and one is training the other, I suggested that teaching some basic reading skills would be a good place to start. Others I have used are "You speak very much like an American, amazing for somebody that can't read". I just don't answer the door most of the time, eventually they leave.

Haha but I'm sure he pays a nice fee for that gated privacy.
I haven't had any solicitors since my over enthusiastic dog tackled one... Apparently minorities are scared of my dog for some reason.

It only takes a second to politely tell someone that you don't have time for a sales, political, or religious conversation and prefer not to discuss those topics or do business with strangers on your doorstep. I've never had to raise my voice or had anyone get belligerent with me as I shut my door.

There was a woman who was shilling for Obama during the 2012 election season. She came to my door. I told her that if she didn't do anal she was wasting both of our time.
I was so fed up with the constant, nonstop solicitations that I went to home depot and picked up one of those “No Trespassing” signs in red and white. There w a large white space under the words, and I wrote something like, “No soliciting, No contractors, No estimates, No witnessing, No sales, and absolutely No Roofing Contractors.”
So far, it’s worked. Then again, the bulk of door-to-door sales doesn’t really hit until the weather is warmer.
I answer the door naked holding my gun.

Sometimes the gun isn't even necessary. Hell, even the naked part may be going too far. I just answer wearing a gold sequined thong and holding a blow up sheep. They really don't come around much any more.

I like it. Heck, I might use it next time. Even if it's a dude wanting to sell me siding. I'll try to capture the look in his face when I ask if he's into anal.

I've been considering doing this for years now. Seems like a real solid plan.

My time is more valuable than that. Buy an ADT sign and put it out front. Usually you can find them with stickers that you put on doors & windows too. The former keeps alarm company sales people away and the latter keeps buglers away. it's tricky though because ADT is hip to this game so they are pretty stingy about people selling their signs and logo. Best $20-$50 you'll spend.

Don't underestimate them.
I'm real glad we don't have much of a problem with this. Our front door is set back in a little ways, with a walkway and an overhanging tree. Maybe that discourages people, I've seen people stop on the sidewalk and look towards the door, then move on. We don't even get that many trick-or-treaters.

Yep, that's what I said, in fact the alarm company sign in my front yard for the last eight years is ADT. It acts as an alarm company salesman magnet at my house.
Mount these out of sight and plumbed to your air compressor, and rigged to a switch somehow. That'll scare the dogs off your porch.
THis was around 5 yrs ago. I was working grave yard, and had an infant. These solicitors were ring the bell left and right. Only time I can sleep is when my infant baby sleeps.
It was really annoying, and posted this sign in front of my side window. Notice that I use highlighter on "NOTICE"
After posting this, I only had 1 solicitor so far since posting the sign.

Going to get laugh out of this....
I just had 2nd solicitation ever after the sign. It was a Century Link reps telling people that they just upped the net speed to 40.
I immediately asked them "How much?"
They said $37.99/mo for a year including renting modem/wireless router combo. I just need to call them on 11th month to renew the special offer they will have again, before they raise the price.
I invited them in and signed with Century Link. I was very unhappy with Xfinity/Comcast speed, and their reliability during market hours.
I told them, "Although I have NO soliciting sign on the front, I am glad that you guys came."
