View Full Version : McMillan Stock and Remington 700??

So I got me a Remington 700 .300 Winchester magnum...cause I pretty much got a McMillan stock for free. Any way when I swapped it over, the drop plate won't close up at all if I snug down the bolts. The only thing I can think of is needing to sand down the inside of the stock to get it to drop in a little lower and give me the room that I need to snug it up and have the drop plate work correctly.

Any one else have this problem? If you did, what did you do to correct?

Thanks,

Sounds like it could be a problem with the pillars in the stock. I have the mcmillian hunter edge stock on one of my 700's and I changed the pillars first thing. You might have that looked at before you start sanding on a $600 stock.

I had to read your post again. When you tighten your action bolts will the floor plate not close? If that's the case then sanding more on the stock is a bad idea. If I'm reading it right you may need to in taller pillars.

Make sure your mag box is seated correctly in the receiver and floorplate.
I wouldn't be a whittling on anything just yet.

Definitely not sanding on anything...As far as I can tell, the magazine box is in there correctly. Snapped right into place. I have enough play that I can push down on the trigger guard and it will move. If I hold it down it creates enough force on the drop plate to where it won't open.

Got my phone to start working correctly so I could upload some pics finally. I think there is a lip on the stock that is preventing the drop plate from closing properly, or maybe I don't have it seated correctly:

That picture is the OEM stock ? McMillan doesn't do wood stocks .

McMillan stocks are designed to be bedded before being used and may not fit up properly without it .

That could be my problem then. As far as I know it was custom ordered, but it is not wood just looks like it. The factory stock is black synthetic. Here is a pic:

Maybe it's a MacMillyn? I dunno.

Both have two all beef patties, lettuce, tomato, pickles and special sauce. But the McMillan has a a sesame seed bun.

+1 to Hoser .

That isn't a McMillan stock unless someone has dipped or covered it in something . Whats it constructed out of ? All McMillan stocks are layed up fibreglass around a composite core with the outer finish being molded in to the gel coat or paint .

That first picture sure looks like laminated wood to me .

So after further investigation, you guys are correct. It is not a McMillan stock!! I believe it is from Remington. Never thought to look at the shipping label, but it came from Ilion, NY. Once again guys thanks for all the help. So now can I take the dremel to it?? haha

It has a Remington recoil pad, and it's from Remington. The from address matches Remington's address exactly.

Problem resolved! Got it all bolted up and tweaked down correctly. Cost me a 50.00 and some breakfast...so I still think I made out pretty good. Thanks for your help guys in finding out exactly what I had.
