All,

I am in the market for a nightstand safe or something similar. It's for revolver and needs to be able to be mounted to a nightstand or dresser.

What do you guys use or recommend that isn't too expensive?

Thanks

Define what you consider "expensive".

I use a V-Line box (http://www.amazon.com/V-Line-Draw-Security-Case-Black/dp/B000T24OFG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1394649137&sr=8-1&keywords=v-line) for about the same thing.

Spending more than $200 on a nightstand safe seems silly to me.

Ditto on the V-Line. I use the V-line hideaway. Simplex mechanical lock, very fast, no batteries, excellent at keeping curious little fingers out of trouble. The downside to any of them that advertise as being under-side mounted is that they really are designed that way; you can't sit them flat on a nightstand and open the door. This can be solved by either elevating the box about half an inch off the surface, or just letting the front overhang the surface far enough for the door to swing down.

I love my V-line. Everything else I found relied on keys, batteries, or wasn't very fast to open. If you want to keep it under $200, I am sure you can pick up one of the cheaper offerings from GunVault or Sentry for a hundred or so. They just looked too flimsy for me to feel comfortable in a house full of toddlers and idiot teenagers.

I use a GunVault 2000. I don't trust biometric but can open this thing in a flash. I have it through bolted to the top of my dresser. If somebody wants it, they can take my drawers w/ it. [Muaha]

I use the gun vault mv500-std. I opted for one that opens up since it lives in the drawer. Had it for years and never replaced that battery....which reminds me I need to replace the battery. But if it does die, it has a keyed backup...

-is this for child-proof or burglar-proof?

I just bought one of those $70 vaults from Sportsman's to keep my pistol in. I mounted mine in the closet.

+1 for the gun vault. Mrs Danske has one on the dresser. Keeps the kids out and she can open it lightning fast.

I have a Winchester one that is similar to the Gunvault. After about a year the mechanism (cable) that releases the door from the key pad snapped. I thought it was just the batteries going out because it was making a weird sound. I replaced all 8 batteries and still the same thing. Another year goes by and I shine a flash light in there and you can see the cable spinning around on a spool since it snapped clean off the lever it was attached to. The key still works, but it's not nearly as handy or convenient. So much less so that I never even close the door. I should get a new one. Mine was about $79.00 if I remember correctly.

Oh yeah, it's been about 4 years now and the batteries still work. I put all the old ones back in once I figured out it wasn't the batteries.

I have heard of that same thing happening with Gunvault ones. I had had mine for many years though with no problems.

This is what I use. A little bigger than most bedside "safes". Fits in my nightstand drawer. Two locking bolts and actuators for easy opening.
