I don't know the ins and outs of how the internet functions, but, it seems to me this is what we all scream for daily - less gov't control.

This isn't about transport of data, it's about domain names... Remember when this site used to be reached as co-ar15.com?
ICANN has not done a good job..
But I agree, the UN would not be a good replacement...

Could lead to systems of "rogue" DNS servers to circumvent an internet authority (not that I would see that as a bad thing if the UN was in control of mainstream DNS)

I don't read it as going to foreign control... but maybe corporate control? bryjcom may have it right... a company taking it over needs some model to pay for the workload.
