Impromptu Matches (Bragging Rights From the Range)

If you are a red-blooded American, you relish the flavor of competition. Here is the spot for your tales of bragging rights.


Today at the range, I had a moment of brilliance. The RSO asked me and a couple other guys whether or not we had hit the 4" steel plate at the 500 yd line. It was tucked in between two 12" plates. Nope, no one had. The terms had been worked out: starting position was kneeling behind the rifle. 10 seconds of prep, 5 seconds to send the bullet.


Apparently, the others thought I was at a disadvantage because of my 16" gas gun with only 10x power on the top end of the scope. I got to go first.


One squeeze of the trigger and the 175 SMK connects with the plate...... No one else can even try because the plate fell off the stand. Suck It!!!

FNH 3Gun 2013, Stage 8. There was a C-zone gong at 115 yards, and no one was willing to try a shot at it with pistol (choice target, rifle or pistol). A guy on my squad said no one could hit that in 10 shots. I quipped, easy in 5. A squad bet was made with everyone kicking in $10, person who hits in the least number of shots wins, tie is a shoot-off, no-one hits, it never happened. I went last and no one had hit it yet. The moans and cheers upon the "Doongggg" were very rewarding. Free steak dinner was also pretty good.

My range back home used to let all of the area law enforcement agencies use parts of the range for practice and qualifying. One day the firearms instructor for the local sheriffs department showed up early and caught me running some drills. Long story short, he was an arrogant s.o.b. and basically challenged me to a little competition. Needless to say he was pretty pissed off and blaming his equipment by the time we were done. (Believe it or not, in my mid-twenties my eye sight was good, my nerves were steady, my mind was sharp, and my hand-eye coordination was spot on.)

It wasn't anything particularly memorable. Just some drills I used to practice for IPSC and IDPA. But the firearms instructor was a bit condescending to me. Like he was something special when it came to firearms and I was beneath him or something. Pretty sure there was a dueling tree involved.
