View Full Version : Paint it? Coat it? Shoot it?

Since opinions are like assholes and we have plenty of those to go around here, thought I would pick everyone's brains.

Trying to decide what to do with the rifle in the picture below. I basically have three options on my plate.

Option #1- don't do anything, it's fine just the way it is. Shoot the darn thing.

Option #2- pull the handguard and have it cerakoted to match the upper and lower receivers. It looks horrible the way it is.

Option #3- get some Krylon and try my hand at some sort of camo job. Cheaper and quicker than cerakote and will definitely improve the looks of the piece.

All thoughts and opinions welcome. Thanks.

I've always wanted to krylon something. Just haven't grew the balls to actually make the step.

I think it looks fine if you plan on shooting it. If it's a safe queen I'd choose #2

Did you just pick all three options? [Shake]

Just shoot it. If anything I think the stock not matching is worse than the hand guard.

Leave it as is, or cerakote, but those hand guards are too nice for krylon. That is coming from someone who would love to have those hand guards but can't afford them, so take it for what it's worth.

Unless you plan to keep it forever PLEASE DO NOT RATTLE CAN IT. I have seen some really nice items in the TP. decent pricing. BUT once i see that spray paint shit , i don't even bother. I picked up a rattle can AR ONCE. Sure the paint comes off easy, IF YOU PAINT over it. Spray paint don't come off nothing easy. plus it makes it harder to sell.

The stock being a just a bit of a different shade triggers my OCD.

Do you mean the stock being a slightly different shade of tan? Or the stock not being black? In person, the stock is so close to the same color as the receivers you can hardly tell a difference.

So, do I go with a black stock? The VLTOR is my preferred stock so the only way to get it to match the receivers would be to paint it or have it cerakoted.

Completely agree. I bought an aimpoint for a great price one time, it had been rattle canned, what a PITA to strip down! Never again.

Good point. I have been known to get bored with things and sell them.

I would chose # 2 plus post option #12

The upper and lower are nicely coated, might as well match the Samson Evolution rail with it. If you sell it many will like the pro colored rail.

Also with black grip and mags I would get a black stock.

Three options.

What Bert said.

Opt #1 from above.

Wasting time fussing over it. Shoot it.

Option 4 - hand it down to me.

Seriously though, run it and see if you will enjoy it. If it's something you consider a forever gun drop some coin and make it look like you want it to.

You once sent me a set of middy handguards when I had a need out of the kindness of your heart. I have a near-mint black I-mod on one of my rifles that I never use. I prefer the clubfoot. If you want to complete the two-tone look, PM me your address, and I will send it to you on Thursday.

That is awesome of you to offer. I couldn't accept anything that expensive as a gift.

PM coming your way so we can discuss it.

I am in the same boat, I have 2 go-to rifles and am in the process of building 2 more...(I know, I have a problem) I am thinking about making the 3rd rifle "pretty", maybe a dip or some cerakote.

I would say if you have other rifles that are a "go-to", and can take a beating, finish this one with some cerakote and make it pretty. If you don't care about Krylon, as it looks horrible if you actually use the rifle, spray it. Or leave it looking like a step child that you don't care about.

I am a big fan of shit looking good, I say #2...

Looks like just about everyone thinks spray paint is a bad idea.

I probably won't go that route.

Leaning towards just putting the black stock on it and enjoying it the way it is.

If you had brought it out to CRC on Saturday, you would have had all the metal nicely blasted and ready for a coat of something.

If it was mine, I would replace the stock with a black one and call it good. Honest, that is what I thought before I saw everyone else suggest the same thing.

While I agree I do need some sort of sight system, not sure this is going to get an optic. I doubt I'll shoot it past about 300 yards so I'm sure iron sights will suit me just fine.

This is my second one. Might not be my favorite of all time but I haven't had any issues getting either one to go together or line up correctly. I do like the diameter of it and the way it feels in my hand.

You sound like my wife in the morning when she's getting dressed. I don't see how we can possibly help you with this decision if we don't know what color shoes you'll be wearing when you shoot it.

I put somewhere between fifty and seventy-five rounds through it today. Ran like a top. Even ate some subsonic stuff I had loaded for my last one that wouldn't run in that rifle.

I'm a happy camper.

Now I need to decide on a load and get the sights dialed in.
