View Full Version : Any good faIshion blogs?
Anyone know of any good fashion blogs or websites? I'm trying to pair a light colored suit jacket with black pants and a light blue shirt for an interview (two actually) on Wednesday. I'm looking for ideas on ties. Tie will of course need to be a dark, solid color, as the suit jacket has a bit of a pattern to it. I've never owned a pair of navy pants in my life, but this new khaki suit would go well with some.
The button on the pants of my only other suit popped off right before my last interview. I also forgot my black fancy shoes that day and wore my Bates boots to the interview. It actually was fine since they knew I had just driven 95 miles in a blizzard to get there. Now that I think of it, those boots are the perfect color to match the jacket. I usually wouldn't even consider them for a job interview, but it is for a job crawling arount in burnt out houses.
So where do you guys go to exercise your fashion sense, if anyone on here does that?
This one has some decent rules, even if they are presented in an annoying manner.

I don't know if I agree with #24 and #27 though. #24, agree if it is a white short sleeve shirt and a black tie. I don'tthink a tie should really be worn with any short sleeve shirt though. #27, I used to get crap for wearing V-neck under shirts because I have hair on my chest. Thinking back, I couldn't have less respect for those people if I tried. I do like to wear colored undershirts that pair with pants or compliment a color in a patterened shirt on occassion. Can't do that with a V-neck.

I hate suit and tie, hence why I haven't gone into the office more than once a month in the past decade [Coffee] My only fashion reference is matching sweats and coar hat.
Bump for the employed, I mean morning, crew.
Post some pics of what you're trying to match.
Dress For Success was always a good reference for "classic" men's dress. Maybe try The Art of Manliness.
If you can, go dark jacket (navy blazer) and light pants.
Long sleeve shirt. Always!
What kind of pattern does the khaki jacket have? Try getting ties that will go with different jackets.
The only time I wear suits anymore is to funerals. Although I may be pulling out the interview suit in the near future.

Camo. Not only is it my favorite color, it goes with everything.
I actually take my stuff to men's wearhouse and have them help me pick it out.
There is such a thing as over dressing for an interview. I like to find out what they wear day to day and step up one or two notches. Ive been asked to weld or walk jobsites in my interview clothes before.
I bought two full suits, one navy and one khaki, but only the khaki one will be ready by Wednesday. I didn't have a specific look in mind until I started looking at pictures online.

+1..
I've taken stuff into Mens Warehouse as well. Tell them what you need it for, show them what you have and they will lay out a few of the missing pieces for you as well as offer up maybe some other options.
I got the suits at K&G. Pretty excited to have actual fitted clothes. I actually enjoy dressing up nice, but don't do ot as often as I used to. Made sure to get colors/patterns that can be worn with other colors/patterns of pants to create more outfits.

Isn't this what wife is for? :o
Lobbed from my electronic ball and chain.
She says, "Don't wear that," followed by, "do whatever you want honey; you always do anyway." She doesn't steer me wrong though.

Been dressing myself since I graduated to long pants. The wifey is good at many things, picking my clothes is not one of them. [Coffee]

I think you guys got ripped off. My wife always hooks me up with just the right dress clothes to accomplish what I need.
Work clothes she doesn't understand.

Get a couple of gay (male) friends.. When I need to look nice I always have them come over and pick out my outfits.. Shit I would never think works, but magically when its on its awesome..

I have some difficulty determining color shades, and generically poor fashion sense. So when I had to buy a half dozen sport coats, jackets, ties, and pants, I had the sales person lay out all the combinations that were appropriate, then I took pictures of them. Also labelled each pair of pants, as I cannot see the distinction between the olive colored ones and the chocolate ones, nor the difference between navy blue and black.
I will second the idea of finding a gay guy with good fashion sense. Unlike women, they both know what looks good and what it feels like to wear it. If you want expert advise on what looks good on a man, go to the experts.

Colors and styles she gets. Fit for work not so much. All cotton loose fitting, but not too loose and no chafing and cheap. She thinks everything is fashion show.
I have fashion sense (in my opinion), but I like to look at ideas of what works together as I tend to lack creativity.
Every gay male friend I have dress terribly on a day to day basis.
So I was feeling weird about suiting up for this job for two reasons: 1) It's a field job where you get VERY dirty. 2) It's an internal application. It's stupid to me to suit up when the person you're interviewing with sees you around the office in regular attire, if not every single day.
My inside intel has let me know that suits bug this guy. Someone from outside the company (with more experience than me) recently applied and this guy was annoyed that he wore a suit. That's fortunate for me, but I can't blame the guy because there is no way I'd apply at an office and not suit up if I didn't already work there.
Anyway, we can still use this thread in the unlikely event there are other fashion questions. Here are some examples of what I had in mind, just not very good examples.

Khaki pants, blue blazer, plain white dress shirts, lots of different ties. Brown belt and brown comfortable shoes with laces.
For a week on the road, two pair pants, four shirts, five ties and pairs socks and underwear. Throw in my toiletries and I'm good. Let your tie and your attitude stand out. The rest of your clothes just set the stage.
My preferred everyday is jeans and a flannel shirt, but work requires something a little more business like.

Top Coat, Top Hat.
That first pic . What's that called, casual metro-sexual?
If they know what you look like. Go as you are, not some phony look.

I would have responded yesterday, but some bloating had me focused elsewhere.
Irving - You can thank me for this one with a bowl of pho... But if you really want to impress, nice shirt but tie a NICE knot!
Look here - http://agreeordie.com/
You can close the thread now.
I'm too tall to pull off any knot but a half windsor, unless I'm wearing a vest.
A half windsor on a good silk tie looks best, IMHO. Full windors look too fat.

+1 Agreed. Tied full windsors in Catholic school because we used the knots as a pen holder (till one of the Brothers would make us re-tie the knot). The last 30 years has been all half windsors. They have the added ability to easily un-tie while removing.
And I'm thinking, last time I even had a "suit" on was 1986, about three days before I picked up my clearing papers. For some reason, the powers that were, thought it would be a good idea to have a class A inspection.

A couple good resources are http://www.askandyaboutclothes.com for the more traditional/conservative and http://www.styleforum.com for more modern styles.
In general, a charcoal grey or navy blue suit that's correctly fitted will be a go-to; suitable for everything from an interview to a wedding to a funeral. Black is very harsh and doesn't tend to look good on anyone except dark skinned people unless it's dark out, hence the traditional use as an evening suit.
As far as ties go, there are a lot of ugly ones out there. I prefer relatively simple patterns on a high quality tie. Ebay is surprisingly good for ties. You can regularly find ties that would go for $200 at retail for $50 or so. And yes, you can tell the difference between a cheap tie and an expensive one. for the knots, it's based on the shirt collar. A wider collar, like a spread will require a wider knot like the Windsor. A narrower space between the points of the collar will require a narrower knot.
I don't remember the rules for shirt collars other than I prefer a spread collar as a fit 6'1" guy.
Pants-wise, pleats=cuffs and flat fronts=no cuffs. I prefer a full break length pant. A half works too. Anything shorter and you're risking looking like a dressed up hipster fool, IMO.
Jackets- a 2 or 3 button is the way to go. A good way to remember the buttoning is, from bottom to top, never, always, maybe. The maybe applies to a 3 button jacket. some are made to be buttoned, some are not. If the button is somewhat hidden, don't button it. You should see about an inch of shirt sleeve past the jacket sleeve. Unbutton your jacket when you sit down, button it appropriately when you stand up.
Get your pants and jacket tailored at the minimum. Getting your shirts tailored as well will help you look better as the shirt won't be bunching and creasing in odd ways, poking out of the front of your jacket.
Shoes- cheap shoes look like shit and don't last. As unfortunate as it may be, you very well may be judged by what you're wearing and that $40 pair of dress shoes from Kohls won't work in your favor.
This is really short and fast, but think of it this way, just like with your guns, if you buy quality you won't have to replace it, whereas the cheap stuff will likely wear out and look like shit in the process. You wouldn't put your heater in a Fobus holster, why present yourself in Fobus-quality clothing? People may not understand why you look good, they'll just know that you look a hell of a lot better than the guys who bought the cheapest things they could find and didn't bother to get them fitted.
I bought most of my clothes from Kohls for almost 10 years. I HATE Kohls.
Yammy has some good advise. The only thing I would change is no pleats, ever. Cuffs look fine on flat fronts.
Take a listen to #14 with Sid Mashburn. Well above my price range but good info.

I'm a fan of the stuff that Art of Manliness puts out. I don't follow any of it but that's a mainly because I don't give a damn.

I have to attend a funeral, I have a black suite that I will be wearing. Should I wear a black shirt with black tie or white shirt with black tie?

Firehose jacket:

Made out of, well, firehose material. Probably your best bet for looking decent in a more industrial environment.
