View Full Version : Roll crimping?

So my first loads of 44 mag on my Lee dies came out great with no problems, nice round crimps. Then I loaded some 44 special on some older RCBS dies and I can't get it set right? When adjusted per instructions it's more like a taper crimp, when I run the die down more it appears to roll crimp but it trims the brass? I had never rolled crimped before so I was happy the mags came out great but I can't figure this out, the dies are not labeled taper or roll. It's not crushing the cases, doesn't bulge or anything, did they make taper crimp revolver dies?

You seating & crimping in the same or separate dies ? That crimp is too heavy. How is your sizing die adjusted. I do enough crimp to remove the "bell" from expanding. It fits the case gauge and chambers, w/out issue.

Thats how I taper crimp for my 45's, but for the 44mag they say to roll crimp so the bullets don't work out of the brass during recoil. Sizing is all done on the same die, but instead of using the same die and changing for mag/special I would like to leave one setup for each.
Does it chamber? If the rounds don't move under recoil don't worry. Less crimp works the brass less and prolongs the life. Back off a tad if you can do so.

My Lee dies don't have set screws. Won't you have to adjust it anyway?
My rcbs dies came with a spacer. No spacer for special, spacer under lock ring for magnum.

over crimp can tear / rip plating off as well as increase pressure.

Forgot about this, just like 38/357, if you're not using separate dies / tool heads.

I use a Lee breech lock so I just pull the quick release bushing to change dies.
Did u trim the brass? I have a different set if those don't work out.

Seater dies almost always have a roll crimp in them... even if it's for autos (you just don't turn them that far). You can always de-flare the case (how I prefer to look at taper crimp) with a roll crimp die. Just set it to straighten out the case and not push any further.
