Aid workers and health officials in Guinea battled Monday to contain west Africa's first outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus as neighbouring Liberia reported its first suspected victims.

A man is in hospital in Canada with symptoms of a haemorrhagic fever resembling the Ebola virus, a health official has said.

The man had recently returned from Liberia in the west African region, currently suffering a deadly outbreak of an unidentified haemorrhagic fever.

I'm not panicking just yet but it's a bit concerning that it's on 2 continents.

I'd be more concerned about Hantavirus, if you're a camper, hiker, or like long walks in drier areas. Even around someones out building where lots of mice / rodents have resided.

Same for WNV, considering how wet it was last year. This year could be interesting. There are also strains of Rift Valley symptoms in the central CA area. Kick it up due to drought conditions.

Those or another tougher strain of influenza.

What about "Liberalism"?
It's a disease that will kill us quicker than Ghonnaherpesyhpllilaids.

In World War Z, it began in China.

Zombie plague will likely be a mutated form of creutzfeldt-jakob disease. It's later stages already mimic zombies with violent outbursts and inability to recognize people or communicate and can be transferred by bodily fluids like blood and saliva. Though, the usual method of contraction is eating beef from cattle infected with mad cow disease. If it ever mutated (naturally or manual intervention) to be airborne you'd have a serious problem.

or another tougher strain of influenza.

There was a rather intense lingering strain that went around this year, quite unlike anything many had experienced before.

As long they are slow moving (Walking Dead) zombies... Those fast moving (WWZ) zombies are way too quick for my fat ass.

Our technology in Oncology has improved tremendously past 15 years. Within 10 years, I think most of biologic/Biopharmaceutical/Biotech drugs hopefully be cheaper after some patent expires.
However, we are just getting into immunology and virology bandwagon. I think it will be about 15 to 20 years away from mass producing major infectious disese treatment which can reverse (not cure) the illness.

Ebola has too fast a burn cycle to be a true civilization ender. I'm betting on a highly antibiotic resistant strain of pneumonic plague or a particularly virulent strain of influenza as the next effective pandemic. Shit like Hanta virus is plenty lethal, but not nearly contagious enough to prevent effective quarantine. A faster moving MDR tuberculosis (say 30 days average lethality) might be pretty nasty as well.

Just another hoax promoted by the CDC.
Swine Flu
Avian Flu
Small Pox
Anthrax

Get your "free" vaccinations!
Make sure you vaccinate your babies!

One of many sites I'm sure will be ignored.

Forget WWZ, have you ever played DayZ? They run the same speed you do, so even getting a safe distance so you can shoot them is hard as hell.

Good news: http://blog.estately.com/2014/03/u-s-states-ranked-from-most-to-least-prepared-for-the-zombie-apocalypse/

Given the growing frequency with which zombies appear in movies, TV shows, and your worst nightmares, it’s inevitable the zombie apocalypse will soon be upon us. When it comes to surviving this inevitable showdown with the undead, location is everything. Do you live in a state populated with zealous zombie fighters capable of beating back hordes of brain-hungry walking dead?

Estately answered this question with its Zombie Apocalypse Preparedness Rankings, which were determined using the 11 metrics below that measure fighting ability, knowledge of zombies, physical fitness, and access to weapons…

I thought it began in Africa. In the room that got torched.

Lots of zombies up here. Need practice?

Been in a couple of places I knew I would get the Hantavirus. One being an old mill site and the other a friend's vehicle.

I think we're behind the 8-ball for infectious diseases. It'll be some normal bacteria that really causes problems. A regular old enteric with a KPC or something will spread. Maybe a nasty Gram (+). We just abuse the hell out of antibiotics. I think the era is going to end in my lifetime or shortly after.

Ebola has too fast a burn cycle to be a true civilization ender.

I agree.

A faster moving MDR tuberculosis (say 30 days average lethality) might be pretty nasty as well.

TB would also be my base if I were developing a bioweapon, and I know the KGB were working on this decades ago. MDR (or XDR) takes longer than 30 days depedning….but it can be extremely virulent.

BTW, if anyone is looking for a really fun ID lesson - or just a fun (free) game, check out Pandemic 2.

http://pandemic2.org

You don't need any special joystick or whatever - it is all decision making. You pick your "bug" type and what kinds of properties you want to give it and civilization "fights back."
I actually used to make my ID elective students play it as a lesson.
