View Full Version : Sig AR at Walmart $997: Any good?
Did a search in the forum and around the net and can't really come up with much other than the specs and a bunch of people that refer to it as an assault rifle with clips...
Anyway, I don't really know anything about Sig other than they make a pretty good handgun and that they are relatively new to the AR biz. I guess you could call me a 6920 fan boy but I see that this thing has some extra goodies with it that the 6920 does not (built in recepticle for a sling in the upper, some Magpul furntiture, can switch the mag release for lefties..Etc).
From what I can gather the barrel is not as heavy duty as the Colt but other than that the rifle seems to stack up pretty well?
Anyone that has one of these can you speak to its reliability compared to a Colt 6920, have you had any problems with yours, would you buy it again?
Am wondering what the quality is like for firearms produced over the last year or two with companies maybe just trying to get product on the shelf instead of focusing on producing a quality weapon.
I like the price point but am not sure if I should go with this or hold out and wait till Colt realizes they can sell their 6920s with 10 round magazines in Colorado.
Oh, and it has been a while since I bought an AR, these things I see on the shelves right now here in Colorado Wal-Marts aren't handicapped by any law that I missed or anything like that right?

Sig has the AR line of rifles out at least 4 years. They work well and that's a decent price point. No restrictions other than 15 round tops mags.
Myself i'd buy a Sig before dropping money on the Colt name.

My Dad has the Sig AR. I've shot it and gone through it. It seems like a quality product for the price point. I found no operational issues with it compared to the Spikes, Stag, and RRA ARs I lost in the boating accident. If I was in the market for an off-the-shelf sub $1k AR, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
My wife likes hers. Zero problems in 800 rounds. They had two options when I went. The one with Magpul furniture, and one with a 3x prismatic optic, (without magpul furniture). Hers has the optic which I was consistanly hitting a 14" gong at 550 meters. Money well spent in my opinion.
Still kicking myself for not buying 2 of these at the Taos NM Walmart, during the height of the last panic buy a few years back. Would have paid for our vacation. OD Green Magpul MOE variants, to boot.
They were $907.00 at the time (when $1600-1800 was cheap).
They were fairly new-to-market at the time, but they were Sigs, so I figured they were decent. Oh well...

Yeah, that is the thing. i have a Colt from a few years ago and love the thing, its been great and I would like another but I keep hearing about quality issues and rushed production since the Panic of the last few years. I know Colts were great deals but now am wondering if they are just another rifle and now other companies have caught up and maybe passed them? When I saw this Sig it got me wondering if that may be the way to go. I mean if it is basically the same gun with a few extra innovations for a couple hundred less, why not?

Bad news, Most of them are just another rifle. It's the shit folks hang off them , what make it interesting.

Yeah the one I saw today seemed to have Magpul furniture and I couldn't tell if it was a magpul BUIS or some other brand. I guess at that point it wasn't really a backup though. Of course there was no one there at the counter since it was Walmart but still has me thinking.
The only negative I can see is the barrel is not designed for use with a fully auto weapon and I am pretty sure that will not be a problem.

Well that is not entirely true, When you start getting into the off brand stuff that is typically sub $1K and down to the $700 range, you can just feel a difference in those. Things just don't feel like they fit together properly, gas keys are not staked properly or if at all. I want something that will let me use it well and keep on ticking like a champ after I take care of it and continue on for many years.

No input on the Sig, but I bought a Colt from Wally around Christmas of 2012, and while functionally flawless, the finish left a lot to be desired. Looking back, I probably should have contacted Colt, but since it functioned perfect and it was my only AR, I didn't want to go thru the hassle.
I owned a BCM prior to the Colt, and everything about that rifle was as good or better than the Colt. I no longer own the Colt, but rather a BCM. I can almost guarantee owner Paul Buffoni's QC is better than Colt's. Just my 2 on Colt's recent production stuff, and a shameless BCM plug.
I noticed on the Sig company website it says under the specs for the colorado compliant M400 it says it has a bullet button. Are they sending handicapped California compliant ARs to Colorado?

Probably. That's what they have packaged together with 10 round magazines in all likelihood.

Uhgh! I don't even know what a bullet button is but if California requires it, I bet I don't want it.
1000 + rounds through my M400 not a single malfunction. Shot plenty of brass as well as steel cased ammo. The iron sights are NOT magpul, however all furniture is. I really like the sling attachment built into the lower. Mine did not come from Wallyworld, but I imagine they're all the same

Surely you jest...Colt 6920 LWs are ~$1060
A. Sig has had no shortage of reports of QC issues since Cohen took over
B. Colt is the definition of mil spec; C158, shot-peened, HPT & MPI bolt, properly staked gas key, 1:7 twist, MPI barrel

Not at all. I wouldn't spend a dime on any Colt AR.

I'd take the Sig too. With the exception of a tight chamber and gas port on the 716 Patrol that required a return trip and was promptly and properly resolved, I've had ZERO issues with any of my Sig pistols. Quite a few of them too before that boating accident. I think Sig had some teething problems with the 516, but I've not heard of any issues with the M400.

I did forget to mention, the trigger is horrible. Very gritty, and alot of creep.

Dont own the M400 but I do like them and most other sig products. I do have several Sig 556 rifles which have been discontinued. Have no issues with them. Looked over the Sig M400 and appears to be a great rifle. However FN has there new M4 rifles for sale so I for one down the road will that up.

5 minutes and it's replaced with a regular mag release.

so is any usgi / stock trigger. You want a better trigger pay more, OR replace the factory one.

^^^^^^This. I prefer the RRA 2-stage...but after looking at what they sell for these days, I'm glad I bought them years ago.

How much were they? They sell for $100 new now.
$200 for a Geissele is a bit extreme but they seem to sell the things too.

Thanks, that is good to know. I am going to check it out later on to see if it does have a bullet button. Since we have had the new mag law, manufacturers seem to have just given up on Colorado. Is it that hard to put a 10 round mag in a rifle or even just pull it out of the packaging all together? It really ticks me off that they are allowing these new laws to basically turn into a gun restriction on anything that normally comes with a mag that holds more than 15 rounds.
Is there anything else I should be on the lookout for with these guns that were packaged for California? Just want to make sure that if I get this thing I dont end up with some crippled rifle that can't be nursed back to health.

I recall getting mine for something like $65.
Must be inflation.

Well, just checked it out. No California bullet button. Does have a Magpul grip, stock and handguards, some sort of cheap flip up rear sight, a USGI style 10 round mag. Overall the rifle feels really good, gas key was staked properly, some pretty neat features on it.... Felt really solid which really stood out to me.
I am now just trying to figure out why this rifle is only $997. I always thought Sig products were top notch, Is there something I am missing here? Sounds like a too good to be true kind of deal. Is it due to Sig being new to the AR world and they are trying to build a reputation?

SHHHHHHHHHH why harsh his mellow.
He's over thinking an AR under $1k. I'd be happy to buy it, bump the price up another $150 and cover transfer fees, if the $1k price point is a worry.

. It's an AR the WM AR's usually run $1-300 under your LGS. WHY? because there's 5 millon WM's compared to the 1/2 doz in denver. Buying Power in qty.

I was working in west virginia recently, they had 9 different black scary rifles to choose from, and a whole advertised area of "modern sporting rifle'' accessories. They had a .308 AR I really wanted but CO and WV arent friends
I am now just trying to figure out why this rifle is only $997.
For the same price you can get a Colt and while Colt isn't the end-all/be-all, everyone has heard of a Colt whereas not everyone has heard of a Sig. I have a friend who has been shooting for over 30 years, but it's mainly wing shooting. He mentioned a year or two ago that he might finally get an AR (these frenzies brought on by proposed legislation brings people out of the woodwork). I listed off some various brands to consider and his immediate response was "I'll get a Colt". He knows absolutely nothing about AR's but everyone and their third cousin has heard of the brand called Colt.
Those that know a thing or two about AR's already own one whereas people that don't know anything will see two rifles on the Walmart shelf: a Colt, a brand most Americans are familiar with, and 'the other one'. (disclaimer: I do not own any Colt products)
Right or wrong, If a Colt AR-15 is $1K, that's where all the other brands have to compete if they want that first-time buyer who is willing to spend more than PSA. If Walmart dropped the price on 6920's to $500, the Sig would instantly be $495.
Good point on the buying power of Wal-Mart. Still thinking about it and clearing room for it in my toy box. There seems to be an open spot :)
What's that old saying, One is none and two is one... and on down the line.
Thanks for all the help!
