View Full Version : Building an SBR for Duty use

So I'm re-entering the world of AR ownership after a few years of AK loyalty. I've had a 20" BCM laying around that I never used because I didn't wanna get AR cooties on me. Alas, I'm at a point I need to build an AR for LEO duty use. I've got pretty much everything I need apart from the barrel, handguard and muzzle device and I think I've narrowed it down to two options
BCM 11.5" barrel (torn between light weight or standard), I don't plan on being in a sustained gun battle, nor do I carry enough ammo for heat to be too much of a realistic problem, so I'm thinking the weight savings would probably be worth the sacrifice in temperature tolerance.
The other two configurations I'm torn between are as follows
Option 1: 11" Troy alpha rail w/ battle comp (this being the light and tight option, but will suffer in indoor engagements and low/no light use)
Option 2: 13" Troy alpha rail w/ KX3 (longer and heavier but probably more user friendly indoors and at night. I mostly work at night so I'm thinking this would be the better option, and the KX3 might aid in reliability)
Is there a happy medium? Maybe a 10.5" barrel with a KX3 and a 12" rail? Any opinions? Primary area of use will be low light urban and indoor areas. What would you go with?

10.5" with a Daniel Defense quad set up for a Surefire SOCOM556-Mini. The length change is only an extra inch or two from what you are suggesting with the shorter barrel and suppressor overlap on the quick detach mount. It lowers flash and noise to levels that communication and vision are still working. I suggest the quad rail because they are crazy tough and then you can mount any light you desire on it. Obviously I'm a fan of the Daniel Defense Mk-18's. They are a design that's pretty tough to beat.

If it's for duty use, I wouldn't advise building your own, and your agency will likely have some say or veto power over what gets used. It may only be allowable for you to order off a list of known vendors, or they may not care as long as your dept. armorer checks it out and okays it...?
My favorite shorty is my 7.5" Kitty-Kat (pic not mine)

My agency is pretty cool with whatever, I've been using a Draco SBR for over a year now, lmao. I really like it, and it has served me well, but it isn't the best choice in an active shooter environment (even though I'm using hornady polymer tipped rounds), not to mention it would be best if we were all using one caliber.
I like the idea of the 10.3 MK18 but that's just not in the cards money wise, especially with the surefire suppressor. If money weren't an option that would be sweet.
Do I gain much in the reliability by going with 11.5 over a 10.5 if I'm using a KX3? I've been out of touch with the AR world for so long that I'm like a noob with some of this stuff. I could build one blindfolded but I don't have a clue what all the cool kids are doing these days. Just looking for something short and quick that is reliable and doesn't totally blind me at night.
As for the quad rail thing I usually run a streamlight TLR series light at the 6o'clock position right in front of an AFG and it seems to work well for me, so I really don't have a need for side rails. I appreciate the input guys, keep it coming, it's helping to generate ideas.

Not much if any reliability difference, If it's going to be ran as duty , non suppressed go the 10.5" We had the 10.5" running both DI and an AA piston setup. Both ran great. Had a buyer looking for 10.5" bbls offering a nice chunk o change and sold them. Other wise they'd still be in service.
If it was me
Upper
Daniel Defense 10.3 barrel (I would have it milled to lw profile)
Bcm 10" kmr rail
Sl 1 flashlight/front site http://www.roschworks.com/
Vltor upper
Wmd guns bcg
Aimpoint micro
Bobro mount
Daniel Defense rear buis
Kx 3
Lower
Vltor a5 buffer system
Whatever stock you like (vltor imod gets my vote)
Gisselle sdc trigger
No reliability diffrence 7.5-14.5

A Draco? Haha that's awesome!

Here is my 7.5" upper with a 9" troy alpha and KX3. It is my new favorite as it is the newest but it really is small, compact and really light. I will be adding some sort of light/mount combo.

The BCM compared to another 11.5" with a KX3, VLTOR upper receiver and Daniel Defense m4 10.0 rail. (The rifles are not sitting level with one another.)

Here is my 11.5' BCM, 11" Troy Alpha, and BC 1.0. It is loud but it stays right on target without even trying. This thing rocks!

My LE duty gun (once my stamp gets here) is a BCM 11.5 with kac urx2. My research led me to the 11.5 over the 10.3 due to a significant increase in dwell time, therefore reliability. I dont understand why people get a 10.x and throw on a KX3 for "reliability". Why not just get the 11.5 and have the reliability and velocity??? Im probably the only one that doesnt like the troy alphas. Have you looked into the BCM KMR?
I also wouldnt "build" a gun for duty use. It scares me when my LE buddies come to me to fix their built guns. Buy a complete upper from a rep manufacturer.

BCM 11.5" would be my suggestion, so you are good there. Overall it will be more reliable with less wear.
I like the MI rails and the Noveske NSR rails much more than the Troys, but I would still mock up the assembly to make sure you won't overgrip and blow off a finger. With the battle comp, personally, I would not build you that configuration, maybe with the KX3, but you are still only an inch past the end of the HG with that configuration, so still maybe stick with an 11.

My spousal unit really likes the carbonarms HG ;) If there was one that allowed use of an AA piston setup i'd have one too.

I have like 4 dremels, 2 drill presses, a mill and a lot of hammers. Anything will fit given the right set of tools. [ROFL3]
Very glad she likes it.

So do i, but discretionary income doesn't allow for any more WECSOG projects. Wonder if you could do a step up front portion. Only needs to be the size of the latest magpul top hand guard.
Untill my stamp gets here, she sits on my dept. lower. [Muaha]43163
Why does your trigger guard look "not normal"

Why does your trigger guard look "not normal"
it is normal, it's not one of those high speed tactical units folks install. The flash could also throw it off. one of those which one I I is closer things.
Why does your trigger guard look "not normal"
Good enough for government work. Whoever had it before me broke it and electrical taped the trigger guard. The tape finally gave way. But the happy switch make up for it [UZI]
