I was out for a motorcycle ride and rode past south site down by Deckers and a large portion of the hill was on fire. I was there for about 3-5 minutes before fire showed up. I passed some big forest fire equipment that as still responding a good minutes later.
Who was there? what the heck happened? Anyone know?

Probably. There were a lot of people down there. The flames were big enough to see from the road.

Perfect just got my car fixed and was planning on going up there today (Sunday). Does this mean it is closed?
[Rant1] I liked that site. Whom ever started it needs this [flamethrower].

It's still open, I went up there today.
The fire guys said it was caused from someone shooting, not known if tracers were involved or not and it burned several acres.

SS is my preferred place to shoot but idk what the big deal is; there isn't even anything there that could burn more than a few acres or get out of control. In all reality if might have be a good thing to have a small burn to finish whatever didn't burn durning the Haymen firea.

Stop shooting exploding targets. I would put money on it that an exploding target did that. Every time I go out there it sounds like a fucking war zone with those things blowing up. Dumbest shit some one could do.

Now, I dont shoot at the south site, but I've set off quite a few of those, up to 12.5lbs, and never even seen any sign of an ember. I have however whitnessed a small fire start using wolf/tula ammo.
Not one to jump to conclusions.

Tannerite does not cause fire. It is an explosion and water vapor effect. You have more chances starting fire w/ cirgarette butt, tracer ammo, etc etc etc. That being said I have seen dumbass put a small can of gas to add 'explosive' affect to the tannerite. The tannerite explosion robbed most of the oxygen and kills most of the fire..but the unspent fuel still burns.

Is South Site still open for shooting or did this incident screw us? I'm thinking about organizing a memorial shoot for the office this summer ...

Then go to a range. One of the reasons I don't go to a range is so I don't have some body telling what an "appropriate" rate of fire is or whether or not I can draw from a holster or blah blah. And besides, as ChunkyMonkey stated, a Tannerite reaction consumes oxygen. They won't ignite anything so long as you're not adding to the reaction with a secondary reactant.

Must have talked to different people then.
Least it was still open for plinking.
The site is still open, and one of the few that I am aware of. I was up there two weeks ago, and as per usual carried a giant lawn bag filled with other people's trash. My son and I always carry a fire extinguisher with us, just in case we, or someone else, do something stupid. He's a Boy Scout, so he keeps me safe :)
Note that Tannerite will not cause a fire, when used properly, because it gives off water vapor and does not create heat or a spark. From the Tannerite FAQ page: "When a bullet hits Tannerite® with a high velocity (2000 ft./sec. minimum), it causes a chemical reaction which results in a large water vapor cloud along with a loud report which is used as a shot indicator". Others might, like Star Targets, I've seen them emit a small flash when hit. Here's the link: http://www.tannerite.com/frequent-questions/
Safe shooting everyone!
