This morning I was loading my truck up with tools to go do a job. I set my torch set outside next to my trailer for 5min and the guy across from my shop picked it up and locked it in his truck. I know who did it as I called his boss asking if they took it. He called me back saying his guy in fact took it and is in castle rock now. I believe the guy inteded to steal it since it was next to my trailer!!! Cost me $50 to rent another torch. I'm going to give the invoice to the owner of the company and should I get the police involved?

A police report couldn't hurt. It is what we pay our taxes for.

What makes me even more livid, is people who steal food out of the fridge at a workplace.

Actually, even more irritating is people who not neccesarily take or use something with the intent of "stealing" an item, but the fact that they think it is perfectly okay to borrow something or use something they do not own without asking, and they genuinely think they did nothing wrong.

That's pretty blatant thievery. I'd involve the police. my .02

Sounds like the police should show up at the jobsite in Castle Rock to me.

I'd rather not add to the police burden if not necessary. The owner of the shop called you back and confessed to his guy doing it. What I'd do is submit the rental bill to the owner of the shop along with a memo explaining why you're billing him (including the fact the torch was next to your trailer) and add another $10 or so for your time in having to chase down a rental and return it. The shop owner can dispute the charge for your time and labor -- in which case you can tell him your alternative is to file a police report -- or (more likely in my opinion) he pays your bill and then takes it out on the guy who really did wrong.

Whats the appropriate time frame to make a police report? I didn't have the time to call right away, was already running late to the job.

Item stolen, you know where it's at and the police should recover it for you. JMHO

You can make a counter report any time I believe.

Be careful about making any sort of "agreement" with the other guy for payment. Once you do that the police may consider it a civil matter and you won't have the option of having the police investigate the incident as a theft.

I'd call the police and report everything right away. There's no excuse for the guy taking your things. Once it's recovered, depending on what the guy who took it says (ie: "Oh, sorry. It was just a mistake.") you can decide then on whether or not to pursue a criminal complaint.

The ONLY think that the muzzies may have right is their treatment of thieves.

GOD I hate thieves and honestly I'd have a hard time not getting violent with some schmuck that stole a tool that I used to feed my family with. Call the police and report the theft.

For $50 the LE isn't going to do anything. Especially since the guy who stole it, had his boss confirm it was in a truck. Owner and or guy who took it say is was an "accident" He thought it was his and didn't bother to look at it hard. If the intent is to return it, there is no theft. Just another oops in life, or so the thief will say. The cops will tell you if it's not returned to call them.

Or use Ex-Lax cocolate bars instead of baking chocolate.

Then of course the tupperware is never returned, or not washed and left in sink so people blame you for leaving dirty dishes everywhere.

Went forward in time for this quote:

... the scumbag knew damn well it was not his torch.
Call the PD, file the report.
Whether or not the employer or scumbag wish to make nice is on them.
The scumbag stole your torch.
End of story

You know who stole it, you know where the person who stole it is located, the police might be bored and want to chat with him or arrest him. We teach our kids not to steal, even little things like candy bars or gum. Even little things like a torch is stealing and should be treated as such.

Yup and nowadays you never know. If you try to deal with it the neighborly way people are liable to fly off the handle these days and become violent. Better to have the police handle the situation. Plus it will be documented!

steal (stēl)v. stole (stōl), sto·len (stō′lən), steal·ing, steals
v.tr.1. To take (the property of another) without right or permission.

Can't see how this is being debated... The guy did not take 50 bucks, he stole something worth a lot more, right?
The only way I see this as being permissible is if he is an undocumented American, then it is obviously not his fault.

Alright I left a nice nasty gram an dudes car asking to call me so I can get my tools back. He calls me and I didnt hear my phone ring. He called several times and I finally talked to him. He was very apologetic and his excuse was he thought it was the other welders torch from a couple shops down. I can guarantee he wont be taking my tools again as I dont think he's the type who needs police interaction. Maybe he is telling the truth but I wouldn't bet on it.....anyway I got all my stuff back.

FWIW, food being stolen in the workplace is usually indicative of a drug problem with one or more of the employees.

That is interesting since where this problem was, everyone was stamped supposedly trustworthy by our government. LOL

Sorry to derail, would that also be indicative of other addictive tendencies? I've noticed "things" at work and this would make sense.

Just adding a little humor, but make a report if you haven't gotten it back yet.

Or people who just feel like they are entitled to YOUR shit. This could very well be a new disease we have discovered!

Like the folks who are going to be angry during disasters because you prepared and have a generator or some stored supplies, and THEY didn't so they have a right to sabotage the generator or steal your food?

How can you be positive?
More often than not, it's usually an indicator of a much larger problem.

I believe methylene blue is one of the ingredients in some fish tank medicines. I don't know about the fish tank additives, would guess they're safe but wouldn't assume so. I know methylene blue is supposed to be perfectly safe, been used as a biological dye and tracing agent for decades.
