How much would it be to turn an SKS into a carbine? The main thing is having a gunsmith cut the barrel down and re-installing front sight (without bayonet and grenade launcher).
I know I will then need to get my foreign parts down, but I can probably do that myself. Any suggestions on parts are appreciated, the key for this gun is cheap, otherwise I'll just trade it for an AK.
Thanks!

you don't need to get any parts down. all you are doing is shortening the bbl. i'd consider trying to trade for a carbine vs. the smith work.
remove the grenade launcher, that will shorten the OAL a few inches

Thanks, I thought any modification meant having to change parts.
So you think it's not worth the cost? How much do you think it would be? I saw some carbines today at the gun show for $350 and the other stuff was expensive, so maybe I could get one for $300?

surf the web and be ready to buy. @ $300 for a SKS carbibe you'd better be quick in the SOLD keys
another $2-300 gets you an AK.

Yeah, I really want an AK, but don't have the money for that right now. Maybe I should just wait.

I have both an Romy AK and a SKS Sporter, And I have to be honest with you, the Norinco Sporter is a much funner gun, and more accurate. Cheaper too. Harder to find, but worth the search. It takes the AK mags too. Feels alot like the AK as far as the weight. Much more ergonomic than the AK as well. I would strongly suggest the Sporter to anyone wanting that caliber of gun.
Now, if the AK was full auto, it would have an advantage. But I don't plan on going there. At a hundred yards open site I can keep the SKS grouped inside 16 in radius. Good enough for any zombie thwartinghttp://www.mikelearn.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/skullycamo02.jpg. :)
