I haven't seen one of these yet; the closest thing is the "WTF were they thinking" thread, and that's more comedy than rage-inducing. In this thread, the premise is simple: try not to lose your f#%!ing mind or throw your computer out of the window. LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

How long does an it take a peanut or peanut dust to cause an anaphylaxis reaction (read painful death) in a child that has a peanut allergy?
google Sacramento, summer camp, peanut allergy to find out.
How horrible would you feel if your childs snack killed someone? Especially if you had a flippant attitude about the situation previously....

I guess we will never know, since my son is not allowed to take the sandwich to school.
However cruel this may sound to you, if it were my son who had the peanut allergy that severe, I'd think the responsible thing to do would be to limit his exposure to an environment that depends on the other 40 toddlers in the room not having a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast.
And were you the kind of guy to not vaccinate your own kid, I'd hope you'd feel pretty terrible if he killed another kid or their elderly or sick relatives with Pertussis.

I would have to say that someone who doesnt vaccinate is just as ignorant or self centered as someone who doesnt take peanut allergies seriously.

But seriously though, let's get back on track...
We were talking about peanut allergies.
Recap:
-those with peanut allergies should be careful.
-nuh uh. I have peanut allergies. You should be careful for me. I win.
...I think we should pick it back up from there
Is peanut allergy really that common that we have to quarantine schools from peanut butter/peanut products? Is it so bad that a kid cannot be on the other side of the room with a PB&J sammich without creating insta-death for the afflicted child? The way some treat it, it's as if a child with peanut allergies touches an unopened Snickers bar they'll keel over and die. [facepalm]

I'm allergic to cashews, pistachios, macadamias, and a few other nuts.
I need to make sure you don't take them anywhere outside your house because you might kill me.
Thanks.
I'll make sure I don't bring peanuts to a school. I haven't been in a school for over 30 years so my track record is pretty good.

Ronin --
Peanut allergies are becoming more common than they once were. Not sure why. Yes, allergies that lead to anaphylactic shock can be quite severe but I think it is also somewhat overstated and overemphasized by overly cautious schools and lawyers. I can understand airlines changing their snacks because they run multiple flights on the same aircraft and want the flexibility of changing platforms when needed so they don't need the headache or expense of sterilizing each aircraft between each flight. I also don't have a problem with parents of afflicted kids ASKING other parents if they would agree to go peanut-free at school. OTOH, schools simply banning anything with peanuts in them is a bit of the tail wagging the dog and that's what I object to. Historically, people with somewhat unique conditions figure out how to deal with it themselves. Today, they demand society at large accommodate them.
The argument that children who don't take vaccinations (for whatever reason) endanger those who do is just stupid. If the vaccine works, your children are already protected when they get the DPT, MMR, etc. That's the whole point of the vaccines. The ones who are endangered (somewhat) are the kids who can't take the vaccines for medical reasons if there are more kids around who haven't been vaccinated simply because their parents listen to Jenny McCarthy.

Well then, allow me to get this heading in the right direction yet again!
I would have to say that someone who doesnt vaccinate is just as ignorant or self centered as someone who doesnt take peanut allergies seriously.
Fair enough. Given my nom de plume, clearly I couldn't possibly fall into the 'self centered' category.
You know who would, though? Parents of children with severe peanut allergies who send their kids to day care centers. You know, the ones who will gladly put their child in a high-risk environment and expect all the other parents to be responsible for their safety. Those ignorant and self-centered parents who would willingly expose their child to the danger, but also all the other parents and children a lifetime of regret over the inadvertent consumption of a common breakfast food or a peanut M&M. The sort of parents who are preparing their child well to live in a world full of danger around every corner with the expectation that the rest of society will bear the burden of keeping them safe.
If little Billy wanted to come to my house and play with my son, I'd lock up all the peanut butter and everything I could find with tree nuts, and probably buy some specialty food to minimize the danger. That is something I would do because I wanted little Billy and my son to have the opportunity to play, and it would be my responsibility as the host to ensure they had a safe environment. However, if I don't know little Billy from little Adam, and he's just another of the 40 toddlers running around on the playground, then the onus falls squarely on little Billy's parents to ensure they have an epi-pen and he stays away from the kid with the peanut M&Ms.
To be clear, I don't blame the child for the severe peanut allergy they did not choose to have, nor the parents for seeking day care or the desire to mainstream their child. I do blame the parents for placing their child in a potentially dangerous situation with nearly ubiquitous exposure to a common and otherwise harmless food-stuff, and then expecting everyone else to bear the responsibility of keeping their child safe. I comply because I don't want my child to have the responsibility for killing their child due to their poor decisions regarding risk exposure, but I am bitter about it.
