View Full Version : San Francisco is over-run with people car-tipping (Smartcars!)

" San Francisco is a city of acceptance and tolerance, unless you drive a Smart Car.
Recently, a rowdy group of urban cowboys has been roaming the streets and tipping over any Smart Car they come across. The damage may look bad, but I’m pretty sure these things are dishwasher safe."

At my most charitable, as much as I may be able to comprehend any social commentary that may or may not be behind these acts, I still think it is vandalism and a blatant disrespect for the property of others.

While I don't condone what I consider criminal acts (destruction of other people's property), I really dislike the Smart cars and find these crimes amusing. Instead of tipping the cars, pic them up and turn them sideways in the space to pen them in until cars on one side or the other leave.
Lobbed from my electronic ball and chain.
It would do less damaged if they would pick the car up and place it gently on a picnic table.
Funny, but still criminal.
Way back in the day, my band director did drive a VW bug... Director was saying he was getting to old to run around the field anymore teaching marching, etc. I didn't participate, but one day some of the student leadership happened to pick the car up and carrying it onto the fball field while the director was at lunch with one of the band booster parents. They put a flashing bubble light, a bow, and a bullhorn on top. When the director came back and saw it, he laughed and asked what it was about. Kids responded it was so he could get around the field faster.

When I was young and stupid, me and my buddies used to do almost the same thing with minis and fiat 500 (the original ones)parked in our street.... You see in europe, yuppies would drive these cars and park them perpendicular to the sidewalks or they would try to wedge themselves between two larger cars so that they wouldn't to pay the meter..... If you were the owner of the bigger car, getting out of your spot would be a pain and often your bumpers would be scratched by the little pesky thing. So, what my friend and I did was to gently lift them and neatly park them on the sidewalk... Then another driver would take the empty spot. Loud morning tantrum became frequent with yuppies having to drive on the sidewalk until they found an opening to the street. After a couple of weeks there was a LOT of empty spaces in my street....

Reason #4,509 to drive a 3/4 ton truck.
Every car is tippable.
but some are more tippable than others
Wait, why do we hate smart cars? Seems like a great city car to me... Oh because libs tend to drive them maybe? I wish Jeep would make something about that size. A street legal ATV basically, would be all over that!

True, but you've got to have a real personal gripe with someone to enlist enough manpower to tip over 8,000 lbs' worth. A smart car, on the other hand, can be somersaulted with three 20-somethings who are half in the bag.

Take 3 guys and a lever long enough and your truck will tip. That's how they do it in Africa.... being there done that too.

I drive a smart, and I'm probably the FARTHEST thing from being a liberal there is. I have an F250 as well, but if I'm driving back and forth to work and I don't have to haul anything but my fat ass, I'd rather get 45 mpg than 12.

I'm no hardcore prepper, but I do have something of a prepper's mentality. Especially when it comes to machinery. Last year when I was getting the front end of my truck rebuilt, I borrowed a friend's Buick sedan. Cue a flash flood with golf ball hail. I refuse to drive anything that might leave me up a creek in inclement weather or circumstance. If TEOTWAWKI comes tomorrow during my lunch break, I wanna know I have the means to get where I need to go.

Also true. But again, I don't think these SF vandals are using pry bars or jacks. These seem to be crimes of convenience and opportunity.

Smart cars make me chuckle. Lots of other things I'd rather drive in the name of fuel economy. But living 3 miles from work lets me keep my transportation options open.

Take the seat out of any of the crew cab truck and put the car inside the passenger compartment!
I remember in 1999 when the Super Duty Crew cab Ford's came out, we measured one and you could fit a Geo Metro in the cab if the center door frame wasn't there.
Back in high school the Principal drove a old (then new) VW Super Beatle. The football team put it on top of a snow bank at the end of the parking lot.... that was funny!

I was going to suggest that a smart car might even fit in a Ford Ranger bed, but I was surprised to learn that a Smart car is 61 inches wide and 106 inches long - Bigger than I thought.

you couldn't pay me enough to drive around in a smart car, or anything else with less mass than my trucks.
smart car my ass, lets see how smart it is when you collide with a full sized truck buddy. they have a crash cage, yes they do and testing show the lack of crumple zone will csause all your internal organs to explode.
the frame on my truch will catch that little car about halfway up the hood and pulverize everything from that point on,
snow strom, full sized trucks, semi trucks there aren't enough gas savings in the world that makes the smart car worth the bodily harm that will come to you in a serious accident.
seeing as my average trip to sam's fills the 8 foot bed of my truck you can also bet I would not be surprised at how much room they have

Bingo.
Meh. It's at least as safe as a Ford Fiesta, Dodge Dart, or Toyota Yaris. It's fun to drive, good in the snow (within reason), gets great gas mileage, will run 65 up I-70 to the tunnel with 2 people in it, and is great advertising for the business. Besides, I can get a turbo kit for it...

Not bigger, but quite possibly better engineered in terms of safety(Mercedes owns Smart, and engineered pretty much all of their safety systems). Realistically, unless you're driving an MRAP, pretty much anything is going to come off second best going head on with a 50 ton tractor trailer rig. Even then, chances of being able to drive away are virtually nil.

i get the motorcyle thing, Hell i have done a lot of dangerous things, rock climbing, been upside down in more than one rock crawler, we all have our thrill seeking moments, this is the one area that is just don't see the benefits, as commuting or doing our daily driving will and is the most dangerous thing we will do on a daily basis, no way
to each their own is right, i never said don't drive it, hell the more people in those little cars the safer i will be. it should also be said that the normal commute, if i have to commute is down 285 and over three mountain passes. a four wheel drive lockers, and recovery gear just means that i will get home more safely, ground blizzards and black ice, being prepared is just smarter (ha see what i did there)

Yeah, I chuckle at all the small car bashing. My crumple zones consist of 1/4" of leather over 1/2" of fat. A smart car looks to me like riding in a tank by comparison.
I can post pictures of a Dodge truck that lost control on the highway into a guard rail. Everything held together remarkably well and only a wheel got broken off. Didn't stop the driver from being paralyzed from the neck down though. Nor getting ripped off for replacing $10,000 worth of guard rail.

But it's a jeep thing. Most of us won't be able to understand.
Hehehehe
I can post pictures of a Dodge truck that lost control on the highway into a guard rail. Everything held together remarkably well and only a wheel got broken off. Didn't stop the driver from being paralyzed from the neck down though. Nor getting ripped off for replacing $10,000 worth of guard rail.
Would you stop buzzkilling? I'm trying to pimp Chrysler products over here.
I've never seen this before, but thought it was pretty well done.

so if you lived in NY, Chicago and had no kids, or hobbies, or dates or ever left the city, maybe the smart car would work, you are stuck in snarled 3 mile an hour traffic and never go more than two miles from home,
Oh wait that is what the subways are for, nevermind
I guess if you are some metrosexual, denver city dweller that never gets more than two miles from wash park it might be an ok vehicle. until you need to bring home that new dresser you just bought at a yard sale, Hope you have a buddy with a truck.......
Oh and the guy in the Suburban probably does not live in the city,
I am thinking it is more of a lifestyle thing..... Here is my thought on the whole thing............ I don't want to live a life that can fit into a smart car

I don't think anyone that's ever actually met me would classify me as a metrosexual...[LOL]
For 2 people that don't feel the need to haul more than 15 or sacks of groceries at a time, the Smart works fine. 42 mpg in town (better on the highway) sure beats the hell out of the dollar-a-mile that my F250 gets. The Smart will cruise nicely at 80 mph on the flat, and run 65 up the hill to the tunnel. It's not my first choice when there's a foot of fresh snow on the ground, or when hauling a ton of gravel home for one of the wife's interminable landscaping projects, but it's comfortable, handles well, has a kick ass stereo, heated seats, and AC, and it's at least as safe as my motorcycle in traffic.

I don't think that most people that own a smart car run it as their only vehicle. It's their commuter car.

I would rather get the 42-45mpg my tuned GSXR1000 gets and have enough power to have some fun... LOL.
Easier to park than your smart car as well.
(BTW - your F250 needs some help if it costs you $1/mile. My 2500 ram is covered for all maintenance, fuel, tires, and truck replacement at last years mileage rate of $.555/mile.)
Less than 150 miles a day??? PSH... I put 200+ on a day for 5 days a week, and I am home every night. On track for 60K this year alone.

And you don't have to contend with those pesky wiper blades.
My F250 is a certifiable antique ('89)[ROFL2] with a 5.8 5 speed 4x4. A dollar a mile is probably an exaggeration, but it's rare that it gets over 12 mpg. All I know is I have to run the card twice to fill both tanks, and that doesn't cover it for much more than a week of commuting. Personally, I'd much rather get 50+ mpg on one of the bikes more than 300 days a year on average. My commute is about 56 miles round trip, so the best option is whatever gets the best mileage for the current weather/cargo situation.
