best way to ship a rifle from out of state.

So what is the safest way ship to a family heirloom rifle from out of state ? I assume I will need a background check being it has to be shipped to and from an ffl. What are your suggestions for packing use a gun case or just a box and lots of bubble wrap ?

As I recall, there are ATF exemptions for inherited firearms? A special form?

Nothing has to be shipped from an ffl. You should ship to a FFL who accepts long guns with a valid DL. Now if i was shipping long guns back to myself because i didn't have room for them, on check in luggage.......................... I'd address it from myself to myself.

If putting it in the mail I'd recommend a hard case. bubble wrap alone will not do it, the ends have to be very well padded with something that can take abuse, Tshirts, styrofoam, etc (or a hard case that'll hold it snug)

My Knights guns were shipped to me in plastic Flambeux cases inside a cardboard box. So I wouldn't overthink it. I'd go to some place like Dicks or Gander Mountain, buy one of those $20 plastic cases, and put it in a cardboard box.

Shipping method use FedEx "Adult Signature Required". Much better chain of custody than UPS.

When I have shipped from out of state to here the transferring FFL gets a copy of the dealer license to be shipped to. Once here you get a background check done and pay transfer fee. I have used Green Mountain Guns in Lakewood in the past.

If you are the actual person shipping it at the far end and it is your rifle, yes.
