View Full Version : Let Your Tinfoil Hat Juices Flow: Video Traffic Counter Sighted Yesterday.

So I saw something on the way to work yesterday. Near Iliff and Tower, however on a side road just off the intersection. It looked strange. A pole with what looked like a small camera at the top pointed down at the street. It was affixed to a street light pole.

Upon doing some more research it was just like this:
43679

Here is an article about it: http://miovision.com/blog/bcounted-miovision-takes-part-in-waterloo-regions-commuter-challenge/

I would have taken a picture but on my way home 8 hours later it was gone.

Wonder why they are counting traffic this way and not the old way?

I thought it could be one of those Aurora Police License Plate cameras that they say they have but won't tell you where they put them. Would have made sense that they be portable to target a certain neighborhood if they wish.

Probably because the old pressure activated switches that use rubber tubing are always getting torn up. Couldn't have any plows running through the intersection, either.

Ahhhh HA!!!!!!

The manufacturer actually does give them the ability to collect license plate data: http://miovision.com/traffic-data-solution/traffic-data-types/license-plate-data/

Driving past it backwards removes any data collected......... everyone knows that.

The time for tinfoil is long past on that issue. Between your phone and ubiquitous cameras anytime you drive somewhere there is a record of it in multiple places.

I saw those in the 4 corners of your block the other day. [panic]

It's the way they determine whether a traffic light is needed.

You could always make a fake plate of an FBI most wanted, slap on your Prius, and slowly drive back and forth to see what happens. Then you might actually know. :)

I might do that actually.

Good idea, I haven't used my pellet gun in a while.

What about speeding backwards ? A minus the speed limit ticket ?

Could even do it legally in places that don't require a front plate. Might have to go by in reverse though :)

They were installed at a signalized intersection, at least the one the OP saw...... [tinhat]

I believe it was attached to the speed limit sign with the flashing light:

There are traffic cameras all over the place. Those bother me more than this temporary rig.

You know (have seen) there are cameras at nearly every intersection with a stoplight in Aurora...all 4 directions...mounted to the top of the stoplight supports?

According to the government those don't save data. Ya Right.

My question on those is.... Why use a CAMERA instead of SENSORS if you are just detecting the presence of a car to control the traffic light. Seems like overkill. Why install a camera if you are not going to use the CAMERA for what a CAMERA is for?

If data exists, it is collected. The gubment doesn't create data so they can NOT collect it, store it, index it, and retrieve it on demand.

And domestic surveillance without judicial approval is illegal. But we are preaching to the choir me thinks.

I need to develop an app attached to my phone that runs off gps data, Bluetooth to my truck that sends a signal to my to be developed license plate flippers. Then at every intersection, e470 pay point. Red light camera, etc the plates will automatically flip and I'll avoid the man, the tolls and the tickets!

Just like Transporter!

Rules of the car
1. "Respect a man's car, and the man will respect you"
2. "Greet the Man"
3. "Seat Belt"
Franks Rules
1. "The deal is the deal"
2. "No names"
3. "Never open the package"
4. "Never make a promise you can't keep"

The camera based systems work much better and take less maintenance. They'll detect me on a bicycle while older signals I have to go over and hit the crosswalk (or wait for a car). Road damage and repairs won't destroy the sensor when it is up on a pole.

There are fringe bonuses as well, the whole big brother thing :)

Heck, maybe I have it now...I live in Aurora and sometimes I gotta live up to the name, plus you never know when parts like that would come in handy, lol

The one that was at the first signals west of Tower & Iliff were put up late morning and taken down approximately the same time the next day, to record 24 hrs of data. Then moved to another intersection or area along that corridor until they captured where you turn off of Iliff. And installed again along your route........
