Heading out as soon as I get the intake back on this BMW. Supposed to rain a bit tomorrow but ah well. Gonna get some relaxation. No cell, no internet. Woods, dirt, fire, food. Fuck yeah.

Heading back to Wellington Lake that I went to last year. Hopefully not to crowded.

I seriously need to get a camping trip up high on my list. I used to go tent camping as a kid all the time, and I have been here since 2005.

Maybe I will start getting as list of equipment together and start buying this year for next year.

I still need to find a good place to test out my Get Home Bag. where I can park without fear of towing and walk in a ways.

I'm jealous! I want to get a bit more camping in this year. I only went a couple times last summer. Have fun!

Camping is a major goal this year. Getting a back country rig set up (you will never guess but an X5 sucks on true off road...) and have most of the gear I need for it. Plan to camp in places hard to get to all summer long. Leave friday night and camp for the weekend and come back and curse my chores on Monday.

Wow, last I heard Wellington lake had closed to the public, but that was a few years ago. When did it open back up?

I did 5 days of tent camping last week. It was great, but not long enough.

Selling the scout, it was always a flip vehicle. Getting a Land Cruiser.

ETA: It is ready to sell, still needs some work but I am done with it.

I have done four tires. Shocks all four corners. Got the carb working ok. Plugs and wires. Front wheel bearings. Rear wheel cylinders, rear brakes. Clean and adjust all around. Runs pretty well.

No idea. I was there last year right at the end of the season.

Taking my 3 yr old camping the year for the first time at Taylor. My father in law has been going these since he was a little boy, he introduced me to this spot and I plan on taking my kids there at least once a year. We usually go for a week, eat what you catch (fish), shoot, ride, climb, hike... Aka be free!!

One of the best places in Colorado.

I used to go to Wellington Lake a few times a year with my grandmother when I was younger. She'd tow up the hunting camper with her Chevy Astro. Fond memories of fishing the lake and playing on the rock mounds.

I now do "real" camping in either Roosevelt, Arapahoe, or Pike national forest, but Wellington Lake brings back some serious nostalgia.

You can park outside the Lost Creek Wilderness Area and hike in. No fear of your vehicle getting towed as lots of people are backpacking in.

We usually end up in the Comanche Peak Wilderness. There's a few good trails up there, tons of hiking and great off the map camping spots.

Lol, I always have to make the distinction when people ask me if I want to join them for a camping trip. Never again will I be suckered into going somewhere with bathroom facilities, power hookups for trailers, and check in stations.

As long as the following are all true, I'll take it:
-No cell phone reception is available
-There are no pre-made sites or fire pits
-You are in the national forest, thus can shoot anywhere so long as it's not over a body of water/road or within 300 feet of a building
-You need a 4x4 to get there
-There aren't any sort of facilities

If I could find some people who were more inclined, I'd like to do some backpacking camping complete with land nav.

We're trying to do a first camping trip with daughter this year. We're all likely to learn something.

We took our boy when he was a little over 2. It was really pretty easy. It was his first night sleeping outside and he had a blast.

Getting out to camp in the country is good for the soul. Doesn't matter so much where you go, or what you do it in, just that you get away. Hope you're able to do it.

Two weeks ago we made our annual spring camping trip along the Colorado River near Moab. Perfect weather. The drive from Cisco along the river to Moab is one of the most scenic in all the west.

We hiked through the red rock country up Negro Bill Canyon, biked from Moab and along the Colorado River into Arches National Monument, and camped on a back road near the confluence with the Dolores River. Sometimes we take the Klepper kayak, but not this time, just the mountain bikes. Lots of good food, elk steaks and wine in camp. As usual we had one night out in Moab, but this time we departed from the usual beer and burgers at the now boring micro brew place. Had some very good sushi and sashimi, in Moab!

We saw a little wildlife, a couple mule deer, a bobcat, a ring-tailed cat at night, a canyon wren, several rock wrens and say's phoebe, and some of the first turkey vultures of the year.

Took our vintage 1966 Prowler camp trailer; been camping and hunting out of it since I was a kid. People point and stare as we drive by but it's a sweetheart rig. Met another family camping in a vintage trailer, good folks. It's great fun getting out and away.

If you're looking for a great camping spot, Loch Lohmund is my favorite place in Colorado. Of course, I am supremely lazy and stick to drive in spots.

This, or one of the other nearby bodies of water is where we're going to go.

with the snow we got this year the snow field before the lake will likely never melt, go prpared, i have driven through the snow filed with the slush coming over the hood of my jeep on 35s

was up one father's day few years back, we were the only people to make it through the snow filed. everyone else was walking in.

Well it was empty at the lake. Two other campers besides us. It wasn't real camping, had a fire pit and toilets. Must be getting old, humping a ruck just doesn't strike me as fun anymore. Hell packing up a wet tent this morning since it rained from 2 yesterday afternoon till about 4 this morning wasn't a blast either. Temp sat just above freezing all night. New sleeping bags I just got are clearly temp rated incorrectly.

I did. And what was weird about the bags is they were both the same manufacture, my daughters and mine. But I froze my sorry ass off. I was sleeping in the bag in long johns, my jacket liner and wool socks. Still cold. The inside of the bag was cool to the touch all night long. She was in the same rated bag, in her normal night time cloths and as she described it "Rosty McToasty" all night long.

What was the sleeping surface? If you were touching the ground, and she wasn't, that would explain it. Also, if she is a kid, maybe she isn't compressing the stuffing as much.

Those thin self inflatable air mats, with a blanket on top. For both. And wait, are you saying I'm fat?

Sometimes the baffles behind the zippers don't come down to cover the zippers -- this creates significant air leakage and heat loss. It is a particular danger for those of us who come closer to filling out the available volume of the bag (cough cough). The other thing I'm sure you're aware of but others might not understand is the importance of having clean dry sleeping clothes -- sleeping in the same clothes you wore and sweated in during the day is a recipe for a cold night.

Your daughter looks like the age of my son when we started nine years ago. He grew up out there; we started in a tent and now use a pop-up trailer. Although sometimes we still use a tent. I have a rule though; I won't camp in any place that has more people around then my house. I can get the pop-up back in some pretty rough trails. Some of my favorite places are up by Webster Pass and Divide. Although, I have some places I go down by the Ben Tyler trail.

You know, that most awesome thing about taking the kids out with you and letting them enjoy the outdoors, is they will be doing the same thing you are doing now when they have grown. They will want to get out and take their kids to enjoy the outdoors as well. Reminiscing about the time that you are taking them out right now later in life.

Another related note, I just found out I have a 50% or greater disability rating from the VA (haven't been oficially notified yet, but I got a letter from the DAV telling me they have been notified) Went into e-benefits and sure as heck I can generate a letter with a 50% rating on it! I just sent in my application for a National Park "Access Pass" from USGS. Now I can do National parks for free!

Apparently, even persons with 10% or more can request the Pass through USGS. If you have a VA rating go here!

http://store.usgs.gov/pass/access.html

This might be the little nudge some folks need to get into camping.

I have gotten like three lifetime passes. And then lost each and every damn one of the cards.
