View Full Version : cleaning on entrance to chamber
anyone have a good way to clean the entrance to the chamber? you know, the part the bolt fits perfectly into? ive tried using a brush but i still don't feel like its getting it very clean, nor can i clean the area just inside of it.
on a related note, i generally clean my ar's and 1911 after every time i go shooting, no matter the round count, but just realized i didn't clean one of the ar's last time, its been about a month and i put about 100 rounds down it, think thats a problem or itll be fine until the next day of shooting?
as always thanks for the patience and help

Diesel and a match! I had a Sgt. who had the smallest pinky finger you've ever seen. I'd clean for what felt like hours and he'd finger the star chamber and come out with tar. Your gun will be fine. The military abuses their stuff daily and it keeps on working!
I picked up a chamber brush kit, seems to clean the lugs and chamber fairly well.
As long as you weren't shooting something corrosive you will be fine with not cleaning, even shooting 100 rounds of Wolf you should be good to go.
I use this

works...
Dr_Fwd has the right idea! those things are great! and i dunno... some may not approve, but after that, spray it with carb(NOT BRAKE) cleaner, or a spray on gun cleaner that is thin enough to let it drip out. it will take all the loose crap right out. Then clean your barrel and the rest of the gun as normal! No Sgt has a pinky that will find anything worth a damn after that!
Shy of the chamber brush, a Q-Tip and forceps work very good.. The platform is fairly forgiving,, not as much as an AK style, but still..
Several years ago I did try an experiment, went several months without any major cleaning, just ran a bore snake through the barrel basicly, shot some CLP on it now and then, when I was shooting.. Worked fine, and didn't seem to have any ill effects when I did Clean it...

I once didn't clean my AK for 2 years as an experiment, just to see what effect carbon would have on it. Nothing, still functioned flawlessly. Wish my AR could do that.
There are also Chamber Stars you can snag and use as a soak prep to the chamber brush shown above. Google em'
I clean my AR's every 1000 rounds whether they are performing poorly or not. Run it wet and go from there or convert to a piston gun..
i like the q tip idea, i think im going to try that, thanks for the advice everyone
