I think the p-dog pups are out of the hole. Not standing up-right yet but I seen em'. Got me a few too.[Sniper] Not seeing very many adults out other than the ones that are domesticated out at the fed center on Kipling/Alameda. Anyone having any luck yet?

Not yet I need to find somewhere to go though. Still haven't got to shoot my new 243 much yet and haven't shot my AR at all yet need to break it in this week...

Anyone have a decent spot somewhere near Colo Spgs / Pueblo area?
If I'm not mistaken, the PD season doesn't start until June 15 on public land. But it's open year round on private property, am I correct?
So are you supposed to pick up the dogs you shoot, or do you just show up, shoot all day, then pick up your brass and trash when you leave?

Babies are out on my land, they're dumb as rocks too.......
I usually walk the field afterwards to view the carnage, and pistol fry the babies that are scurrying about trying to find the schards of thier parents.

Open all year on private and the coyotes take care of the spoils. lol

Hawks get the remains where I go. Biggest damn hawks I've every seen out there. Those little owls probably get some too. Burrow owls I think. And yes the coyotes get their fill as well. Just helping out "mother nature". Keeping the life cycle going on.
Sounds fun with the pistol frying! I'll have to give that a try!

Are you hunting east of c-springs?... there are only a few burrowing owls colonies in all of Colorado.
I almost shot one once thinking it was a p-dog.

Yeah you got to look carefully to identify your target. No not out east of the Springs. South of Ft. Morgan a bit and up north of Morgan too near Stoneham.

Anyone been out lately since the original post?
What are the rules for hunting on private land? No shooting toward or across a road right? No shooting within so many yards of the road? I remembered that my grandpa has some land near the Wyoming border. I was thinking it was only 10 acres, but apparently my memory of the one time I've been there is rusty, because it is 320 acres. I need to ask him if I can go up there and shoot some prairie dogs. That'd be fun.
Now that I think about it, I think the surrounding land has some cattle, but they may or may not be around. I assume that presence of any live stock just means no shooting on that side?

Its not hunting. Its pest control. Remember these words. Free for all pretty much with common sense.

Lots of owls where I go shoot near Sterling.
They have been out up here for numerous weeks. I need to get the new 17hmr out and brokken in.

Even if on private land, I'd play it safe and make sure you don't shoot within 50 ft of the centerline of a road.
I believe the 50 yard rule only applies to maintained roads. If the road is not maintained by state or county, then you're free to shoot close to or across. When there is doubt, definitely play it safe.
On private land, get permission of the land-owner to act as an agent for pest mitigation and you're good to go.

They are all over the vacant land in Ft. Collins. Can't shoot them and they know it.
My hunting partner and I made a trip to South Central Wyoming last Sunday and got just over three hundred. Got the last hundred in under one hour!

I would love to set up on the NE corner of Carpenter and Trilby. [M2]
What is the average range you guys are dropping these things at? A few months back, a few of us went out to some private property by Sterling Co, shots averaged 175-400 yards prone position, .223-55-69gr. Skidish little bastards....

That range is the usual for me as well. I got a few designated p-dog guns. One for a bench right by the truck that reaches out there. And a few walking ones for when the "close" ones go down in the hole and I got to advance. I've been enjoying a walking 17HMR when the bench gun is useless. I get to check the carnage and put down some more without carrying a ton. Been thinking of building a 223 to replace the HMR but I like the rim-fire just fine. 17 and wind don't mix and I never get no wind. I have reached out with a HMR but its not spectacular. I've got out to about 400-450 ish with it but I'd say its a lot of luck at that range and very little skill.
Ditto on the .17HMR, great for up to 200 w/NO wind. Now if the rain would just stop, I'd be back out there........[Rant2]

We have been hunting the same ranch in So Central Wyoming for the last six or seven years. The first few years shots under 100 yards were common. Used a lot of rimfires back then. Now I would guess the average shot is more like 175 yds. Still get some close ones but I think we have killed off most of the stupid ones.
I like to start off with a 221 Fireball. I use that until the shots get too long, the wind gets too strong or the gun gets too dirty. Next up is either a 223 Rem or a 223AI. For the really long ones or for real windy days its a 22-250 or a 6mmBR.
To give you an idea of how good this ranch is: About four years ago my hunting partner and his son, myself and another friend shot 1408 dogs in a single day. My partner and his son used only rimfires (22mag & 17HMR) all day. They got 800, the other guy and I got the rest. Now that is some Prairie Dogging!

That sounds like that was good days there! I have seen a noticeable difference from last year to this one on sightings.
On this ranch you go to or you the only one who has access to the property or are other people going there as well? Just wondering because I know other people go to where I go and I suspect this is the reason for the lower sightings at closer ranges and possible lower numbers in general. 6MMBR huh! I bet thats a good wind eater. I just built a 22-250AI and am desperately waiting for my timney trigger so I can get it out. I've always thought about a 6 in something dual use. Coyote, p-dog, target. What twist did you go with?

Gun Troll,
The ranch manager allows a few folks from the nearest town to hunt and also some Swat Team guys from New York come out once a year for a week. The Swat guys set up in one location and don't move until there is nothing left to shoot at. No point at all in going behind those guys for several months. A nice gift certificate for the ranch manager and his family from Cabala's at Christmas time insures that we will always be able to hunt there. This year I am going to be one of the very few he allows to hunt Antelope on one of the ranches.
As to the 6MMBR. The barrel is a 24" SS Lothar-Walther bull barrel that I bought very slightly used from one of the guys on Savageshooters.com. It is a 1-14" twist that would not stabalize the 110 gr bullets he wanted to use for 1,000 yd competition. I put it on a LH Savage action with a Sharp Shooter Supply competition trigger in a Bell & Carlson DuraMaxx stock. I have a Bushnell 4200 6X24X50 side focus scope in Burris Signiture rings on it. The gun is scary accurate with 70 gr Ballistic Tips over a near max charge of Vihtavuori N135 in Lapua cases. This is probably the most accurate rifle I have ever owned.

OK Dirty Harry isn't that much of a granola after all. He got a few today. The day was perfect again. If anyone has been putting off going you ought to go soon. Not to hot. Plenty of moisture so the grass is green and the mounds stand out. They are well fed and oh so plump. Might have to dodge a tornado or two but that just spices up the day a little.

They may be dumb but serve their purpose. Mice beware! P-doggin is not any different than any other "hunting" (if you want to call it that). You got to identify your target before pulling the trigger.
