Last weekend I scored 260 in the Pueblo P-Dog match.... extremely happy!!! It was my first match of the year, I had "Long leg" out of service for a whole month... went with some old DOPE off this ballistic program and things actually went well besides the first two shots I made that were oopssy worthy/deserved to get kicked in the balls kind'a sh*t [LOL]
The last time I was out there I only scored/hit like 7 out of 40. Here's the thread I started on that last year. https://www.ar-15.co/threads/116403-Is-it-just-me-or/page5.
Now the goal is to hit that 300 mark... yep, I suck... but Gawd damn I'm having a lot of fun [Beer]

Here's are some pics:

What target 1 looks like through my scope.

You're still parked more than 30' from the road? Nice shooting and beat that goal.

That's one busy reticle.

Good shooting. Gotta love a personal best!

If you can shoot a 260 you can shoot a 300. Just being able to do the right thing over and over is the hard part.

Looking forward to seeing you break 300 soon.

What is the longest shot you have to take. I dont have my 308 build finished and would like to get out with my AR. Are distances close enough to be somewhat competitive with a 556 ar? It looks like everyone has bolt guns.

Lots of guys shoot AR's. I typically shoot one in the AM match and a bolt gun in the afternoon. Short targets are 220ish, long out to 425. The long ones are doable with an AR, though it's easier when the wind isn't howling.

For giggles, I'm going to be shooting the next one's morning match with an AR in 300 BLK. We'll see how it goes. I typically shoot the morning with the gas gun (normally my 556) and afternoon with the bolt gun.

SON OF A B*TCH!!!

I know I got a 290 today... I slipped up on the 2nd string... and on the last string 9th target.. I fumbled that one [facepalm]

Consistency is the name of the game. I was swimming all over my rear bag, and I kept over compensating for the wind trying to read it through the mirage... and that (the mirage) was playing with my eyes down range.

Do you guys use the mirage as a reference of wind speeds or just an idea of where the wind is blowing... or both?

Anyways.... Good job to XC700116!!! Hitting the farthest target with your 300 black out!!! [Beer]

First, I'll admit this is way beyond my area of expertise.

But, I will toss in my two cents worth. Mixed with a few questions as well.

I used to struggle with mirage back on the gulf coast of Texas. Seems near 100% humidity and temperatures in excess of a hundred degrees combined with heat coming off the barrel produces more than a fair amount of mirage. Especially when shooting at 600 yards or more.

Hard to to get comfortable squeezing off a shot on a blurry, wavy looking target.

I ended up swapping out my scope and dropping my magnification way down to help with the mirage. Made a world of difference.

What magnification were you using? Maybe try dialing it down a bit next time and see what happens?

Not much you can do with the equipment to combat the wind though. That's all about experience and practice. And a little luck never hurts either. (At least in my case.)

Better luck next time, Mike.

Hahahahaha, total luck, especially when you look at the whole of my match with the black out 6 of 40. But it was still fun. There's something about being able to see your bullet fly into or at least right by the target that's just fun.

Good to see you again man, it was definitely a fun time. 330 w/ the 260 didn't exactly have me thrilled but it wasn't horrible either.

And yeah if you just looked at the mirage, you'd swear there was a half value wind, but there was literally nothing or at least not enough to effect a good bullet. BTW it took me the first 2 relays to really figure that out (with the 260 in the AM match)

Yea.. it was all me today.

Shooting through mirage is not a problem for me. I can see things pretty clearly through my optics.
I was trying (on and off) to use the mirage for wind calling... which was probably the wrong thing to do. I noticed some of my missed shots today were from over compensating on windage.
I was also using the mirage to point out where the wind was blowing.

I think I got a new strategy... I'll be watching the splashes made by misses during the windiest times to get a rough idea where to hold next time. I need to get on that spotting scope when it ain't my turn to shoot [Coffee]

Thanks Brother [Beer]

As noted, the mirage was wierd today. I'd agree the mirage was indicating 1/4 to 1/2 value, and much of the time there was basically no wind. We talked about it in the truck on the way home, and the only guess we had was that the mirage was from wind up close and farther out there was no wind.

It fooled me on the last string. I was certain there was 1/2 value wind...until I missed.

Still... that was a bad ass shot. I could see that hit while I was taking score. "I'd take a hit/luck over a miss anytime."

Do not talk to me about this 260! [ROFL1]

I thought the same with a half value, but I was just shooting/holding slightly left off my thick reticle (not even equal to a quarter of a MIL) center mass... out to 425 yards.

Wind calling using mirage... I don't know anymore....[beatdeadhorse]

The worst thing I was doing.. just thinking about it... Coming down from target 6 (425 yard) I was keeping the same hold and missing target 9 like an idiot over and over again [LOL]... just cause I was seeing mirage moving the way it was consistently.
I need to start shooting without my shoes off so I can feel where and how hard the wind is fricken blowing.

post-shot routine.

pre-shot routine.

i failed to set the rifle back to zero from a 400 yd dope that I had dialed in. I goose-egged the final stafe and It cost me the competition.

I will never forget that for as long as I live.
