View Full Version : Camping at South Site?
A friend and I went to the South Site on Tuesday. A guy had a tent on the first range as you drive in.
Didn't see anyone until 15 minutes later when he came over the north hill right in our line of fire on the second range.
I waved him away. He just waved back and plodded along the hill until he finally came in behind us and wanted to talk.
Besides telling him that he wasn't too bright walking around the ranges like that I said where he put his tent is a designated shooting range not a camp site.
He said he wasn't worried about being shot. Anyone can camp anywhere in the national forest.
Never over estimate the common sense of people.
Anyway, after he moved on to his tent, we had a good shooting day.

I'm not evened amazed anymore.
I feel like there really wouldn't even be a good place to camp in that area anyway...

Definitely not a good place to camp, unless you were planning on shooting or you were doing a COAR-15 party.
natural selection just doesn't work like it used to.

People have been camping in that meadow long before shooters took it over.
I remember over 20 years ago when you would go there and motorcycles and campers were parked all over the area that is now considered by some to be a designated shooting area.
I used to only shoot there on week days as weekends had too many campers and motorcycles at that location.
Even 4x4 camping parties where as many as 50 trucks were camped out there.
That hill with the marker designating it as off limits as a road used to be great fun... even seen a few trucks/jeeps flip on it.

I think we need to get a COAR party figured out for that spot soon

Yep. My dad and I camped there a couple times in the early 90's

Jim is taking point for that.

Walking around the hill at the south site while people are shooting is a very bad idea. But he was right, people can camp virtually anywhere they want in the NF. It is a multi use area, not just for shooting.
That said, I grew up in Woodland Park and have camped dozens and dozens of different spots around the south site and rainbow falls. I personally would pick someplace a bit more "quiet" than the south site.

To the best of my knowledge, South Site is NOT a "designated shooting range." The fact it is a common shooting area does NOT make it a designated range, nor does the fact that there is a sign there asking shooters to pack out trash make it a designated range. Someone correct me if the NFS has assumed liability by designating it as such.
Stupid or not, he has as much of a right to be there as you do. If hiker/camper were shot out there, do you think the media would be branding him or the shooters as the one's lacking common sense? Anytime you go out to a public area to shoot, you're an ambassador. Take the role seriously.

Ok. Now I want to set up a tent. Wake up, roll over, unzip the opening and pop targets from the prone off my bedroll. Hot brass might not be the best for the tent material, but at least I won't have to go chase it.

So I went to the South Site on Saturday and did some shooting. Was planning on camping but the rain rolled in and I left. I felt a little weird about setting up a camp with no fire ring around. Does anyone know a good spot in that area to set a tent up that a fire would be okay?

Use one of those patio braziers so you have a self-contained fire ring.
