ok tinfoil stuff over
what is jail breaking?
what are some must have shooting apps (balistic calculator shot timer etc)
any other must have apps??
i know these things have been out for a while but ive always stuck by my potatoe phones
If it's a work phone, assume you have no privacy.
"Jail breaking" is hacking the phone to bypass the built-in security. This allows the installation of software not blessed by Apple. If it was your phone, you could do with it whatever you want. Since it's your employer's phone, don't even think about it. It could void the warranty on the phone and could be a career limiting move if business policy forbids it.
As to the apps, I'll let someone more iPhone-centric address those. I moved on to Android after the 3GS.
If it's a work phone they can monitor everything. I am not sure if they can monitor txts, net usage WITHOUT jail breaking. I had a friend spy on her hubby who she felt was doing things behind her back. But she had to JB.
Jailbreak allows you more control of the phone. You can install non approved apple apps.
If you're concerned about your privacy update to the latest firmware. Their is no JB and I'm not aware of any snooping apps that are approved by apple.
I've used surefire shot timer. Fairly accurate, not sure of any other apps.
Get a Magpul case. If your company is on top of it, they put a tacking system in your pocket. The IT guy says they don'y really look at our info unless the need to. It'd just take too much effort. They are sorta cool, I bet it would be a phone I'd own if it wasn't jammed up with work security nonsense. Hope it's not on Sprint.
Hope it's not on Sprint.
Big time. Sprint has the worst 4G coverage of all 4 major carriers in the Denver Metro. I paid to get out of my Sprint plans and moved to Verizon late last year.

Sprint sucks and the iPhone sucks. I have one from work also and I hate it, the screen is small and it's slow. Compared to my personal droid the iPhone is second class.

^^^ While we are at it let's debate ford vs Chevy, Goodyear vs Michelin, bud vs coors, and elway vs manning.
Back on subject however. I don't say anything into my work cell, text or email something I wouldn't say to my hr director boss etc etc. if it's not yours your privacy doesn't "exist".

Nice. I've been stuck with a work Blackberry for the last eight years. Maybe now that RIM is going under, we might get something a little more user friendly.

As a tech that is currently issuing these I can truthfully tell you the following:
NO - your company cannot see your texts directly, they could have software installed but that's extra money.
YES - since they are paying the bill they can actually see who you are texting with though (just look at your own usage online and you'll see all of the numbers listed)
SORT OF - they can see your web browsing habits, again they'll need software but won't cost as much. My company actually blocks certain webpages
POSSIBLE - turning on the camera and/or microphone remotely is possible however it is actually a security risk and Apple won't allow it. So your company would have to be going against Apple's setup and programming.
As Gman said, jailbreaking your phone is basically hacking it to run non-Apple approved software. It actually does void the warranty and I highly recommend against doing it since it's a company phone. If it were your personal phone I'd say to give it a shot however there is a possibility of bricking your phone (rendering it totally useless hence the brick term) and then you'd have a paper weight.
IMHO I don't install any gun apps or anything personal for that matter on my work phone. I know there are lax companies out there that don't really care but I never want to give my company a reason to put me into a disciplinary action scenario. Here is a list of what I'm currently playing around with and prices. I usually look for the free version and test that out first (if there is one) and go from there.
Ballistic Calculators
Ballistic, $9.99
Mil-Do, $9.99
Legal
Legal Heat, $0.99
Gun Concealed, $2.99
Record Keeping
Range Buddy, $0.99
CCW Guardian, Free (I think)

Implementation and tier 3 administration (among other things) of the Mobile Device Management system for my company is one of my job responsibilities. We use one of the most expensive and robust systems available. Many of our employees have expressed the same concerns since we implemented this system. Even if I turn on SMS tracking (it's not on because I just don't care), I cannot see the actual content of any user's text messages. I can see where the phone has been via its GPS if I want to, and I can see what apps a person has installed. I can wipe the phone's data entirely, or just the corporate data (email settings, etc.). Believe me when I say I don't have any desire to see where the hell Joe Bob Shmuckatelly was last night, even if I had that kind of time (I don't). I carry an iphone 5s that my company paid for, and I use it for whatever the hell I want.
ETA: Most companies who implement a system like this only do so to be able to wipe the phone in the event it is lost or stolen. It is highly unlikely anyone is using it to spy on you.
Do not install gun related stuff on that phone. Do I need to tell the story of being fired for browsing sites like this at work again? That's not the whole story, but it's the one they used and I was still unemployed for almost two years and now several years behind my peers in wages.
Work phone - just use it for work related shit, and nothing else. You want a cool phone to play with, get your own and run amok with it. Same with a company vehicle or computer. Don't give 'em any reason to jack with you or the opportunity to do so. Toys are cheap compared to being jobless, get your own and run nekkid in the streets with it if you want.
As stated above, use work phone for work, pretty much cut and dry. Definitely not worth getting canned.

Winner. I've had a company phone (and vehicle and computer) for ten years. I've always used that stuff for appropriate company-related purposes only. I have a personal phone as well. That's for doing all the other cool stuff. Although, I haven't physically carried the company phone in most of those ten years since I don't want to keep up with two phones. I just forwarded all of my calls to my personal phone and tossed the company phone in the back of a drawer.
My personal phone is actually the 4S. I'm not really very tech-savy and I find the iPhone very intuitive and easy to use. If I get a hold of my wife's Android phone it just frustrates me and makes me feel stupid.

Wow that sucks, man. I guess I've been lucky never to work for companies that have enough idle time to jack with their employees.

+1. I too am responsible for this through my employer... There are many "controls" through such MDM's but it's largely just for policy, security, and remote-wipe capabilities. We cannot look at texts, pictures, etc remotely just becuase it's enrolled in a companie's MDM solution.

It was that my boss didn't like me, so used that info as evidence that I had threatened her. Cop sat at my desk for a month after I was gone.
Well if they ever wanted to fire me for gun related content on my phone at work, they'd have to answer why I have pictures and video teaching my Boss's daughter how to shoot

Treat it like your work email. They pay for it and they have rights to do whatever they want with it. A lot of people I work with have government funded equipment and still pay to keep a personal device.
Yea I'm keeping my normal cell phone for sure
I am probably gonna get some apps though this things pretty cool

My wife and I recently upgraded to the 5S and still have our Verizon 4S phones. I'd be willing to part with them if you're interested.
Use Wickr for messaging. They can't read any messages from Wickr even if they have physical control on the device.
Last place I worked for had high-tech GPS tattlers in all co. vehicles. Damn things sent daily reports to Fleet telling when you started it, where you were, how long it idled/warmed up, what routes you drive/time(s) you were there/speeds, seat belt usage, all stops w/times & locations, fuel consumption, etc., etc. You unlocked the doors, it started tracking everything. I wouldn't be surprised if they had smoke and fart detectors in them too.
That company was all about controlling and punishing their drones. I knew one guy that literally had to fight to keep his job, because he was driving on I-70 at 70mph but the Tattler reported he was on the frontage road, which had a 45mph limit. They tried to crucify him for speeding on a damn frontage road next to the Interstate, when he would have had NO reason to be on that frontage road to begin with! He had to waste the time to go back to that spot, shoot photos and videos, and send them in, just to fight the assholes off.

The program I use to track my runs does that sometimes too. Shows me running right through people's yards for a half mile, or right down the center of Federal Blvd or something.

Sounds a bit like my company. Unfortunately seems it's contagious.
