I need to install a Clonezilla image to VM being run through VMware Workstation. I am having major issues trying to get the OS to install. Clonezilla starts up connecting to an ISO on my desktop through a new VM instance, but then it wont install the actual clonezilla image which is on a USB drive. Anyone have any suggestions?

Maybe it can't use the USB because no vmware tools have been installed yet. Can you create a bootable ISO of Clonezilla? VMware is designed for cloning, any reason you dont use VMware to clone the disk or VM? You could also create a VM disk with what you need and mount it to the VM as a separate disk.

I have the bootable clonezilla ISO that loads, it connects to my USB drive that has the image to clone but it wont install. I do it all day long on actually linux machines, just never on a vm. We are using clonezilla because it is for roughly 50 individual timeclocks a day and at the time we started cloning our company was cheap and didnt want to pay for the vmware license to allow cloning. Let me mess around with it and take some screenshots.

VMware workstation can mount a VM to to the host OS. Copy the image to a VM disk (formatted so the host can access it) and once you are booted to the ISO locate the image from the second VM disk. I worked with Acronis a bunch but never with Clonezilla. Acronis lets you browse the network for images too. You may also try VMware converter to create a VM of the original source machine, very, very easy and free. From there a linked clone would be ideal.

I'm waiting on my upgrade to finish. I was having some issues that 9.0.3 fixes but its taking forever. After that I'll try what you suggested. Thank you.

Not sure exactly what you're trying to do, I work in VMware clusters (I have one with 8 terabytes of RAM, 574 CPUs) but I do know that to boot off of USB on workstation, there's a special pre-made VM you have to boot off of first. I had to do it once and got it working on workstation, but I don't have the details with me anymore.

Ok I finally got the upgrade downloaded and installed. I still cant get clonezilla to install the clonezilla image correctly. Here are some screenshots.

USB with the clonezilla image I need to install. This is basically just a Linux OS.

Clonezilla iso connects to the vm just fine.

If you're trying to restore a clonezilla image from the usb drive to the virtual disk in the VM, it may be that you need to format the virtual destination drive first?

Have you tried to put the image on a network share and browse to it? this was always the best option for me for storage and performance. I'm a MS guy, so Linux mostly looks like chicken scratch to me. The USB (virtual drive) must be emulated, and Clonezilla may not be able to do that properly. It you copy your cloned image to a newly created VM disk it will appear as a second "local" drive and therefore not require USB emulation. Give up on USB and go "local" or "network" through Clonezilla.

If you have the original machine running VMware converter may still work. The only release for Linux is 4.0.1 but is still downloadable, for Windows you can use the latest. Converter will connect to the machine and convert it to a VM. You can the create a copy and open it in Workstation/Player/ESX. If you are on a Windows host for Workstation the Converter will work like a snap-in and can run through VMware Workstation.

This worked. Thank you!

Now to the real problem, I have downloaded atleast 10 font styles for japanese but I am still getting incorrectly encoded characters on the screen. I know this is a shot in the dark, but anyone know how to fix this? We only have like 3 people in our company who knows any advanced skills for linux and none of us can figure it out. This works on a windows machine just not linux.

Ive looked on StackOverflow already but no luck.
