I am looking for a thick heavy duty shooting mat. Last time I was at the Pawnee Grasslands there are these prickly things everywhere and they would come through my thin shooting mat and stab me every time I laid down. Is there a mat that will hold up to these cactus type things? I was pulling them out of my arms and knees all day.

Thanks
Mike

Get a foam sleeping mat from the Army surplus store. Put that down and then put down your shooting mat.

You might also want to pick up a tarp and stake it down out there.

I have the Midway comp mat and it's a good mat, but I wish I'd have seen this before I bought the midway. Yes it's expensive but it's probably the nicest mat out there. http://www.crosstac.com/shop-all-products/precision-long-range-shooting-mat-multicam-top/

Okay, this is something I know something about. I have the Midway, great mat, if you have body protection from IT! The black plastic parts are HOT!!! in the sun. I didn't notice it when I was shooting NRA High Power matches, 'cause I had a sweatshirt and shooting coat on. When I used it recently in a 3-gun match, I couldn't believe how hot it was. Fast forward...long-range 3 day class at Pawnee last weekend...I got the CrossTac Recon mat, two layers of canvas, no padding. It was Okay...but not thick enough or enough padding. So, should've gotten the version with some padding. ALSO...those prickers attach to whatever you have, and the next time you use it, it will remind you of the last time you used it. I spent an hour pulling out little tiny spines from my mat the next time I used it so I didn't get reminded of what I layed it on last time I used it. Those little ba$tards are everywhere on the grasslands.

One more option, http://www.mckennashootingsports.com. Has great mats designed for smallbore as well. Similar to creed more but from a local guy. Shawn is a Colorado highpower shooter and a good guy to work with, shop is in Colorado Springs across from the OTC.

Crosstac. The Midway one can get a little toasty in the sun.

I can't speak for a mat. I will tell you those "prickly burrs" / Goat heads, if you don't get them off and bring some home. Come next year, they'll be all over your lawn. That midnight stroll to the bathroom, guarantee one will have found it's way to your heel, 6 months later!

Every time I shoot a 3 gun at Pawnee, I come home with goat heads all over my tires! Not an issue on the shooting mat, but my tires love them! And, the floor mats. Then, "she who must be obeyed" finds them in the carpet...oooh, that's bad. Trust me.
